I have created a homebrew item with a charge that resets after a long rest, however whenever I have the item in my character sheet and use, then long rest, the item still has the charge consumed.
Is this a bug in long resting with charge items or just a feature that is not supported?
Public Mod Note
(MellieDM):
Merged to collected thread.
Because most Magic Items reset are “Dawn” and many Magic items reset XdX charges instead of all of them, the long rest feature doesn’t interact with Magic Items currently. They are making all kinds of changes behind the scenes, so that might be on the list of things getting implemented.
The character sheet doesn't automatically handle anything that might involve a dice roll. Most items recover xdy+z charges, not all so it isn't automated.
I crafted a homebrew item that allows the holder to cast a spell once per long rest. I used the Scimitar, +1 as the base stats for the blade, then added the following:
Under Additional Information, I have "Has Charges, 1, Reset on Long Rest."
Under Spells, I have "Thunderwave, Minimum Charge 1, Maximum Charge 1, Save DC 14, Cast at Spell Level 1"
It does require attunement.
Equipping the item and attuning it to a character that has no other attunements, I can cast the spell and it uses up the charge. However, clicking and confirming long rest does not replenish the charge, and it requires me to manually replenish it. Am I doing something wrong, or is this an actual bug?
Items that have charges that are regained after a long or short rest still don't recharge automatically. I tried it with the popular "All-Or-Nothing Coin" from the Homebrew section, and also created an item myself that has a single charge that resets at a long rest (no dice involved) and it simply doesn't recharge. This thread has been open for years now. Will this get fixed at any point? :(

It isn’t “broken.” It is working as it was designed. Magic items are not actually meant to recharge on a long/short rest. There are a few items that do regain use after a long rest, but RAW they do not use charges, that was just the mechanism DDB used to implement them from a programming standpoint.
Have to say this is extremely frustrating... I know some items have a 1d4 recharges or whatever. But simple things that recharge on a short or long rest should just be added as an auto update to the sheet on that rest being met.
Also they need to add the ability to have rechargeable actions from magic items. Say a sword gives you a certain reaction once per long rest, you should be able to note you’ve used that for the day and then it reset on your long rest. At times really feels some DDB priorities are in the wrong place :/
1 item, sure. 5 or more, and I would like to at least be reminded about them when taking a long rest.
There are no official magic items with actual “charges” that reset on a rest of any kind. There are a few with “uses” that refresh on a rest, such as the Rod of the Pact Keeper but since DDB has not yet added Actions to Magic Items, they coded those edge cases using the “charges” mechanic. Technically speaking, short or long rest should not even be options for charge refreshes at all.
Since a party could theoretically long rest at 2 pm, the long rest could theoretically end at 10 pm, 7-9 hours before ”Dawn.”
Once they finally finish the system upgrades and add Actions to magic items, then I expect those items to switch from using charges to actions. Actions as you know, do reset on a rest.

A reminder to check these items, just like the HD and HP recover sections, would be nice. Each item has a section in the editor for when it recovers charges. Just list the item and the recovery time. There isnt current a section that states how many charges to regain, so to do anything like rolling the charges would take another conplete overhaul of the items.
If this isn't going to be fixed, remove it from the page. Nearly 2 years later and this is still a problem. Very disappointed to see this is an issue I ran into and it's been here for that long. First time really deep diving into homebrew and a bummer.
Would be nice to hear something from the ya'll again...Otherwise, remove it already. This just seems lazy.

The homebrewer that we have access to is the exact same system the Devs use to implement official content, only we don’t get the admin privileges. If they remove it it will break the character sheets of everyone using anything that uses the function such as a Rod of the Pact Keeper.
They are currently in the middle of a massive systemwide overhaul that has been goin on for over a year so far, and is not done yet. Part of that overhaul includes adding Actions to Magic Items specifically so that they can fix stuff exactly like this. It’s a huge task. It isn’t like flipping a switch or anything. I could go into more details but it would take pages to go into all of the details. That doesn’t sound “lazy” to me at all. It instead sounds like a thankless job that has probably cost DDB at minimum a 1/2 million dollars, and that is a very conservative estimate.
So, I am looking at the responses to this thread and I am disheartened. I just created some magic items and am having the same issues: spent charges not recharging after a long rest. Followed all the correct steps, triple checked the item... nothing. And it is now 2-27-21, some three to four years after a lot of these posts.
Magic items are not actually supposed to have charges that refresh on a rest of any kind. That was a necessity born of short-sightedness on DDB’s part.
Many Magic Items refresh random numbers of charges and the character sheet has no way of randomly generating those numbers and having them automatically applied.
You players just have to uncheck the boxes manually.
Thank you for the reply. I do absolutely disagree with your first point though; there are myriad number of magic items that have charges that refresh. But even if that weren't the case, since you can build items in that way, there should be a way to automatically reset. I understand about having a random number of charges reset. Not being a techie myself, I have no idea how complicated a process it would be to fix this issue. In the meantime, my players will continue to manually uncheck the charge boxes and refresh their character sheets. Happy hunting!!

If you can point to a single officially published Magic Item with a charge that resets on a rest please do so.

Items usually regain a dice roll number of charges which DDB does not automate. So it doesn't automate any item charges.

It is a design choice. It is a shitty design choice. The hooks are in there for when they recharge and how much - hopefully it gets changed soon.
Hoping this gets implemented/fixed/updated soon!

This isn't a bug. How hard is it to manually update an item? My group does it every week. Not everything needs to be automated here.
Lightning Strike - A rebranded Fire Bolt for Wizards & Sorcerers.
Spirit Bomb - A holy fireball for Clerics, Paladins, & Divine Soul Sorcerers!
Sword Dancer - A Cleric subclass specifically for the Drow goddess Eilistraee.
Quicksilver & The Scarlet Witch - A pair of magical firearms for your Gunslinger or Artificer.
