So I created a monk and was playing around with weapons. Tried equipping the sun blade. Despite being a long sword it said proficiency with short swords would count. There is also supposed to be a +2 tried equipping and got an attack bonus = Dex mod + 2. Attack mod is based on Dex so finesse property is working, just not short sword proficiency. Or am I missing something.
Sun Blade not showing up as proficient for my Monk, even though he is proficient in short sword (as the text says is an option)
Also, it says it requires attunment, but the option to "attune" it isn't showing up when I click the item... (related to it thinking I don't have proficiency?
From the weapon text:
Weapon (longsword), rare (requires attunement)
This item appears to be a longsword hilt. While grasping the hilt, you can use a bonus action to cause a blade of pure radiance to spring into existence, or make the blade disappear. While the blade exists, this magic longsword has the finesse property. If you are proficient with shortswords or longswords, you are proficient with the sun blade.
I can't seem to find a way to fix this. Is this a bug?
I too am having this issue, although it changes the weapon to use my DEX (+3) instead of STR (-1), it is not using my proficiency bonus. I have it attuned. It is showing as +5 to hit (3 DEX and +2 Weapon) vs what I believe it should show as +8 to hit (3 DEX, 3 Prof, 2 Weapon). I have confirmed it is proficiency that is missing as I lowered my DEX to a +2 and the to hit went to a +4.
I have a player in my campaign with a sun blade. Luckily, they have longsword proficiency. But I realized when I read it that there was no way for it to work with shortsword proficiency based on the existing modifiers.
A dev could make a specifically edited shortsword that did 1d8 (1d10 versatile) instead of the usual 1d6, but it would have to be a custom made, because the tools don't support it.
They need to put a rush on the homebrew revamp (is the API I see people asking about referring to the tools?) because there are too many official items that dont have all their features.
This bug still exists. My monk's attack bonus with the sun blade does not include her proficiency bonus. Since she is proficient with shortsword, she should also be proficient with the sun blade.
Assume this is because the back end is not capable of classifying a single item as both a longsword and as a shortsword.

I can confirm that we currently don't support the ability to have magic items classify as multiple weapons for purposes of attunement and/or proficiency. However, it is likely that this functionality will be added in a future update (likely with the forthcoming homebrew revamp).
Thanks for the reply. This particular bug is easy to adjust for with the customization feature to add the proficiency bonus to hit into the value on the sun blade.
Still good to get addressed, though, as the underlying design issue speaks to a lack of functionality that could affect other features in the future.
The thread started in 2018 and its now 2024 so ... 6e maybe?
I just picked this up as loot for my Bladesigner Wizard who chose shortsword proficiency.
I guess the issue is the inability to make or alter base weapons.
I looked through all 10 pages of a 'sun blade' homebrew search and nothing jumped out at me and most are different to this.
I've tried to make it myself about 18 different ways and either the proficiency was correct and the dice was wrong or the other way around.
I tried starting with the Sun Blade and trying to mod that, i tried starting with a +2 shortsword and moding that, then i tried a +2 rapier and moding that, and none of them work correctly for shortsword proficient Dex based characters.
***There is a work around to make it work on DND beyond but it isn't ideal.***
I started with the Sun Blade item as a base item, and then all i did was make the weapon give you longsword proficiency when you wield it.
In Modifiers add Proficiency then Longsword and save.
So this isn't ideal but it does however make it work for my character. Being granted auto proficiency means it will work for anyone, This is on my private account so no big deal I guess, but that explains why the solution isn't global.
Good luck to you all and may all you dice rolls be high.

Sunblade should show as proficient for anyone proficient with Shortsword. I had to add longsword proficiency as a home brew item.

DEV's? Any response to this?
I can't simply create a custom Sun Sword either, as it is "too similar" to the existing object.
You can, you just can't publish it.

Hmm. I made a quick human monk and it allows me to equip, adds proficiency and I can attune it.
Try removing the blade from inventory and adding it back in.
If that doesn't work you can always customize the weapon entry and add the proficiency bonus manually.
Bumping.

Hey there -
I'll look into this to get a firm answer.
