Hi guys, this is my first time posting so I apologize if this is the wrong place or has been shared before.
I've noticed a rather annoying bug (or feature? I hope not) where every time I deactivate any character in a campaign, it automatically sets content sharing to disabled. As I'm making a lot of NPCs that I want to deactivate so that they don't take up slots, this comes up every time. You can imagine it gets pretty frustrating.
Any help or feedback would be extremely appreciated!
Disabling the content sharing on a deactivated character is the intended behaviour.
That said, if you keep a character NPC activate just for the time you need to upload purchased content, that content is put on hold when you deactivate the character, i.e. you will able to see the content on the character sheet.
I can see why that works that way, I guess my trouble is more that deactivating any one NPC turns off content sharing for any future characters I make. But now that I know, I can work around it. Thanks for your help.
Yes this feature is really lame. It took me awhile to figure this out and had several players not be able to access content because it auto disabled. Why would this feature even exist? I am more than capable of turning off content sharing when I need to. Really really bad feature!!
Yes, this process is quite troublesome. Deactivating one character should not disable content sharing for the whole campaign. This is a BUG in my books
As the DM of a campaign, you have or another player has enabled content sharing, and when you deactivate any character in the campaign, the content sharing toggle changes to "Enable Content Sharing"? rather than just disable shared content on the deactivated character?
If that is the case, I agree it seems like a bug and not the behavior that filcat was describing.
I am not able to reproduce this in a test campaign.

Exactly
I am the DM of a campaign, I’ve enabled content sharing with my players having some content I don’t have. I make an unassigned character as an NPC, then deactivate them so not to take one of the 12 character slots.
When I do that, content sharing for the whole campaign is disabled.
Ah, I was deactivating an assigned character. I can confirm that those steps do indeed disable content sharing on the campaign.
TLDR: When a character is deactivated, if the character's player was the one doing the content sharing, content sharing is disabled for the campaign, even if the player would still have legitimate access to it (either by being the DM or by having multiple characters in the game)
Some more information to help devs with debugging:
Method 1:
In a campaign with the DM as the person doing the content sharing, enable content sharing
The DM creates an unassigned character
The DM deactivates the unassigned character
Content sharing is now disabled
There are two other ways to re-create this behavior:
Method 2:
In a campaign with the DM as the person doing the content sharing, enable content sharing
The DM follows the join link in to add an existing character they have made (with the DM as the character's player)
The DM deactivates the character
Content sharing is now disabled
Method 3:
In a campaign as a player doing the content sharing, follow the join link in twice, so they have two characters in the campaign
the player enables content sharing
the DM (not the person doing the content sharing) deactivates one of the player's two characters
Content sharing is now disabled
So there are a couple things going on here:
1. Unassigned characters are treated as though the DM were the character's player (this is fine and expected behavior) 2. When a character is deactivated, if the character's player was the one doing the content sharing, content sharing is disabled for the campaign, even if the player would still have legitimate access to it (either by being the DM or by having multiple characters in the game)
That is the bug. It appears to be doing the content sharing check on a per account basis and not per character, or somehow is getting into an unexpected state which results in content sharing just getting disabled.
If a character is "Removed" from the campaign, content sharing stays enabled as would be expected
if the sharing player has multiple characters in the campaign, and at least one remaining or is the DM, sharing stays enabled
if the sharing player has no more characters in the campaign, sharing is disabled.
I would think that the logic for checking content sharing should be similar if not identical, or there is a opportunity to make it so
for any of the devs who read this, let me know if you need more information / testing.

Thank you for your detailed breakdown of this bug! We are looking into a fix for this right now and should have it out soon. I will update this thread when it's been fixed.

Really appreciate your assist with breaking down how this bug works. I wasn't able to articulate it very well in my original post.
@irTriskit, thank you for your quick response.
This has been fixed!
Awesome! Glad to be of assistance and nice turnaround time!

Thank you so much! Thank you Houligan for the step by step and details, and all the alternate ways it was happening.
I was thinking it was working as intended, just couldn’t figure out the intent beyond frustrating me.
So, if I deactivate a character with my DM sharing content, I lose across to the content? And they lose across to my content sharing?
Or was this fixed and a deactived character is treated as archived and able to return, keeping all access ?
