Archery fighting style says it adds +2 to hit with Ranged Weapons.
Just attempted to make a Custom action to represent throwing an improvised weapon. When selecting "Ranged" as the attack type, it adds my Archery bonus. Definitely seems like a bug.
Also, I would not be opposed to the idea of an official representation of Improvised Attacks in the DDB character sheet :D
It’s not a bug. Archery fighting style does not add 2 to the attack roll of “ranged weapons.” It adds 2 to your “ranged weapon attacks.” Any ranged attack you make that isn’t a “ranged spell attack” is a “ranged weapon attack,” even throwing a rock counts as a “ranged weapon attack,” so Archery applies.
If you want to have an improvised weapon, the easiest thing to do is load a light hammer and then customize it directly on the character sheet. If your character is not proficient in light hammers, all you have to change is the name. If your character is proficient, then you just also have to add a negative modifier to the attack bonus equal to your Proficiency bonus.
You gain a +2 bonus to attack rolls you make with ranged weapons.
That's what it says for the Archery Fighting Style for both Fighters and Rangers. Emphasis mine.
edit: To clarify, when you throw an object that's not a weapon, you are making a "ranged weapon attack" with an improvised weapon, but is definitely not a "ranged weapon", which, as defined in the PHB is only a weapon on the Basic and Martial Ranged Weapon lists. So throwing an improvised weapon does not benefit from Archery.
Maybe I was unclear. In DnD Beyonds System, the way that is expressed is with:
Modifier—>Bonus
Modifier Subtype—>Ranged Weapon Attacks
Fixed Value—>2
My point was that it’s not a “bug report” and more of a “feature request.” It’s working exactly the way it’s been programmed to work due to the limitations of the current system. They are currently upgrading the system, so now is a good time to mention it in the feedback forum. Or possibly to request that the modifier/subtype be updated here:
Oh, I'm not using the Homebrew system. I'm using the "Custom Action" part of the existing character sheets. Which very well may use the Homebrew system.
When you create a Custom Action on your character sheet, and set that action to the Range of "Ranged" ... meaning "I'm making a ranged attack with this Custom Action", the Archery Bonus is applied. Which it should not be, because nowhere in the Custom Action am I specifying a Ranged Weapon. When you change that "Range" dropdown, it changes the Attack type from "Melee Attack" to "Ranged Attack" on my Action list. Archery should not be applied to Ranged Attacks.
This is a bug. The "Attack Type" dropdown should probably be "Weapon Type" and have Melee, Ranged and Improvised added to it (which should then trigger Archery, Tavern Brawler and the like), and the "Range" dropdown should likely be called "Attack Type" instead.

Let me try this again.
I understand that you are not using the homebrewer. The system that the Devs use to implement things like Archery is the homebrewer, they just have Admin Privilege. That fighting style was programmed to add that modifier to all “ranged weapon attacks” not to “ranged weapons” because they have no possible frickin’ way to program that currently. The actual gorram fighting style is programmed to add that bonus to all “ranged weapon attacks” so that’s what it does. Therefor, as soon as you label something as a “ranged weapon attack” it will automatically do that.
This is not a bug report because it is not a “bug.” It is working exactly the way it was designed to work. If you want them to change it, then they need to add an entirely new modifier subtype to the list. That is a “feature request.” So instead of complaining about a “bug” that isn’t a bug, you would do well to go request that they change the feature.
Whether it is working as the devs intended or not is not really the point.
The effect is not applying correctly per RAW. The Archery fighting style should only be providing the bonus when you use the weapons listed as ranged weapons. Even melee weapons with the thrown property do not count as ranged weapons even if thrown.
... "A melee weapon with the thrown property is still a melee weapon when you throw it."

Correct. But my point was that this is a request for them to change the way something has been designed, not a request for them to fix something that is broken.
The reason being that this is an edge case. The OP isn’t making a “ranged weapon” but just putting the attack on as a custom action. As far as the character sheet knows, it is a “ranged weapon” so gives you the benefit of the doubt and grants the bonus.
If the OP had actually made it as a homebrewed ranged weapon (presuming they could given the system’s limitations) it would be no issue. If they had made it as a homebrewed melee weapon with the thrown property it wouldn’t be an issue either since the sheet would show the thrown range, but still treats it as a “melee weapon attack” so not add the modifier.
Basically, the character sheet doesn’t know what it is, so it grants the bonus just in case.
The changes to the “custom action” section most definitely constitutes a “feature request.”
PS- I’m not saying that ImelinCain is wrong for wanting the change, I am just trying to point out that their request is less “bug report” and more “feature request” and to direct them to a more optimal place to make that request.
I don't really understand why you're trying to argue this point.
The character sheet is not applying a bonus correctly. It's a bug. I'm not asking them to "add a feature". It's a calculation that doesn't work, and it would be nice if it did.
A "bug" doesn't only have to be something like "the website is broken" ... it means anything that is one way and should be another way. Even if they "wrote it that way" ... the way the code was written breaks the application of a bonus. Many things are a bug. A misspelled word is a bug. Incorrect formatting of a bulleted list is a bug. Incorrectly calculating a bonus is a bug.
The system does seem to assume that if I'm wielding a Ranged Weapon, that I'm going to make a Ranged Attack with it, and applies bonuses for both. And vice versa for Melee. It would be nice if I could show Daggers as a Ranged Attack to see those calculations. THAT would be a feature. So yeah, the team should probably think about how to designate a weapon attack vs a weapon type, but the fact that a calculation is being misrepresented and/or applied incorrectly is a bug.
It confounds me, though, since when making a Custom Action you can set an "Attack Type" but only choose between Natural and Unarmed Strike. Seems like the appropriate fix here would be (as I said before) to add Melee, Ranged and Improvised to that list, and change it's name to Weapon Type. Then change the "Range" category name to "Attack Type", and remove the weapon type bonuses like Archery.
