So, I had an idea of having a weapon that had the weapon in a long sheath that could be varying sizes. I.E you could turn the hilt or something and it could function as a dagger, or turn it to a different setting and have it function as a short / longsword. But I'm having some trouble figuring out how to properly build that in the customize weapon section. Does anyone have any suggestions?
If you're looking for a way to have 2 different damage dice on the same weapon, you have to give the weapon the versatile weapon property. The damages between the two states can only be 1 die different. Like a d4 would be a d6 for it's versatile damage, d6 would be a d8 for it's versatile damage, all the way up to a d12 would be a d20 for its versatile damage. It also works for weapons with multiple damage die too. If you homebrew a maul with the versatile property, the regular damage would be 2d6+MOD while the versatile damage would be 2d8+MOD.
If the difference between the two different damage levels is more than 1 dice step, you'll have to make two different weapons.
Yeah, no. You’re unfortunately not gonna be able to make a single magic item that can count as multiple weapons. For magic items that can become different weapons (like the Rod of lordly might), it is common practice to simply put those various weapons in inventory in a container named after that magic item and simply not equip the container so it doesn’t count the weights for everything in regards to encumbrance.

Flavor is always free in an item's description.
