is there a way to assign a location to items? like what is in my back pack or belt pouch or saddle bags or on my mount? or a way to run off encomberace?
EDIT: I am blind and missed the spell area. Seems like this is workable... I still think the option to use the old one would be good as a choice for the player.
No.. no... no.... one of the HUGE reasons I purchased into this was the ability to have the spell info for my players. I loved the tracking capabilities of the old sheet you had, this new one is horrible... you need the option to use the sheets before this. This almost enough to ask for a refund for the digital content I have purchased here seeing as you have removed the content that was available when I purchased into this.... While I get the want of some people for nostalgia in the character sheets, this is a new product, which opens up a new way of playing the game and using technology to make the game easier and more enjoyable for old and new players alike... your old sheets did that so much better....
1) Spell Points: I'm not trying to be snide here, and I'm hoping that I'm simply missing something here, but... what's the deal? Is it super difficult to implement an option for a character/campaign to use spell points? Now, I'm quite adept at missing the obvious, and I hope that's what's happening here. Are spell points still not an option?
2) For sorcerers who are granted the ability to 'know' more spells than the normal, rules-enforced limit, is this going to take a homebrew class? Will that even work? I was hoping for the ability to simply add as many as are necessary, but I see no option to override the existing functionality. Again, hoping I'm just missing something here.
As others have already noted, the new character sheet might be better on desktop but on mobile it's uglier, more cumbersome, and less intuitive.
From a mobile perspective, the original was amazing and I don't understand why it was changed. I wish we could go back to the old version, though I know the chances of that happening are slim to none. At the very least, the mobile design needs to be drastically reworked with proper UI/UX principles in mind.
The size of the desktop sheet is 1200 pixels, which will not fit on even landscape iPads, which are 1024. We are hearing the feedback about iPad landscape layout and are reviewing if any changes are needed. We want to be sure if we make changes that we consider all feedback after it's been used in play.
Without all the extraneous decoration and white space you could easily fit things. Honestly, i know you guys did some “reasearch” on how the site was used, but not making it fit right on a full sized tablet screen is daft. A 10.5” iPad Pro has a 2224x1668 screen. Half that for retina if you want to go that way, it’s 100 pixels short of your Goldilocks number 1200.
just another complaint to throw on the fire. Light grey headings for fields were a bad choice. On top of that, the coloring is nearly arbitrary. Sometimes a light grey thing is a menu item to click on. (Combat, action, spells, etc). Sometimes light grey is text is a field value. (Spell notes). Sometimes it is just a header. (The attack headings). Sometimes it is just a decorative box. There is no consistent design language being used anywhere. It makes for confusing reading.
The "Desktop Mode" link in the mobile menu was supposed to be removed. Clicking on that (it sounds like that's what you have done) will produce a completely bad experience. Unfortunately, the only way to get back into a mode that looks correct is to clear cookies for D&D Beyond. Apologies for that inconvenience.

No, I never saw a "Desktop Mode" link on the page or on mobile. I was using Safari's built in process for forcing desktop mode, holding down on the "refresh" icon until the option to "request desktop mode" appears; I will try clearing cookies, and see if that addresses the zooming issue. Thanks for the suggestion--and the apology for the inconvenience.
I don't mind sliding back and forth to see the whole sheet; I'd rather have to do that instead of moving between "tiles" (probably not the right term, but hopefully you know what I mean). I do understand that you have a lot of elements and preferences to take into account, and that you can't please everyone. I appreciate and am impressed by your ability to stay non-anxious and non-reactive in the midst of a barrage of competing comments, opinions, and sometimes outright attacks, while still being responsive.
Some things that would improve the current experience on the iPad for me, if a desktop view is not a possibility:
-showing HP on the combat tile
-combining combat, spells, actions, and potentially equipment into one "tile," with "buttons" to shift between these sections as is the case with the block on the desktop view that does this.
Under the character conditions you may want a way to note the level of exhaustion and it's effects rather than just activating the exhaustion condition.
The biggest issue I had with the previous UI was there was A LOT of wasted space when not on iOS and there's even more now. Please can we have the option to drag boxes around to resize them. I find the text hard to read on a big monitor.
Look how difficult the heal and damage text is to read. Especially the grey text on grey background.
I hate having to zoom in on the web browser as it'll zoom all my other pages with it.
That is a VERY large monitor resolution you've got there. That size accounts for <2% of our total views on D&D Beyond. In other words, there aren't many people out there that will see the sheet like you do and we had to optimize closer to the middle of the range. We will see over time if we can make some accommodations for ultra resolutions. Keep you posted!
My screen is rather similar, is 2560x1440 such a rare resolution? Because reading this sheet is very hard even on that resolution and that isn't an "ultra" resolution like those of 4k screens. This entire sheet is made for ants. Everything is so hidden and clearly designed for mobile or much smaller (sub 1080p) resolutions as it's so very difficult to view on desktop with so much wasted space. Why are there no options to resize boxes? This doesn't affect everyone, just add in custom drag markers to let us resize them so I don't have to muck around in CSS every time i go to play a session.
Further feedback as I personally dislike the new sheet on many fronts:
Sorcery Points
Where are the sorcery points for sorcerers? Why is it hidden underneath a scroll bar? This is one of the most important resources for a sorcerer and it's so well hidden. It isn't under "Spells" where I would expect it, and it isn't displayed anywhere else prominently. As a sorcerer this is used constantly in and out of combat at all times. I have to go to Features and Traits > Class Features and then scroll for a bit to look for a tiny little section on it that has the tracker. You can't even view both your Sorcery Points and your Metamagics together at the same time as the window is so tiny.
Pictures for Show:
Notice how you can't see it at first glance at all, we have to go deeper and search!
Gotta scroll nearly halfway through the Class Features section and voila! A tiny, very small tracker. That you have to go to. Every time you need to use sorcery points. And this is worse when you multiclass Sorcerer/Warlock because you'll do it more often too. This is the same for the Monk too with Ki points but at least Ki points are only used in combat. Keeping track of this and seeing this at a glance is terrible. All of these kinds of "limited class resource" need a way to be better displayed. And yes I know they're under the "Actions" section, but that is not "intuitive" as they are not an action! Your action is the "Cast a Spell" action or the "Attack" action and would be expected to be displayed in the proper locations.
AC/Stats/Main Bar:
Why is AC hidden? It's an important stat that should be displayed just as prominently as my movement speed and to be frank, they both mostly only come into play during combat. As a Spellcaster I'll be looking at my spell list much more than I ever would look at the "Combat" section to see what my AC is.
This section could use some customization by user choice. Let us choose to show AC or Spell DC or something like this up there. Even on normal sheets (real pen and paper) AC is displayed as one of the most prominent items there as you will need it literally at any time just walking around.
Spell List
The spell list is a great improvement to be fair. The split between all of the spell levels and such is great, as well as showing the modifier/DC/Spell Attack at the bottom is also nice. However, they could maybe use a relocation to the top to show a bit more prominence, but this is nitpicking. The main issue is how the spell list is sorted and displayed. Showing spells that can use the higher spell slot in the higher spell slot itself is great! However, it leads to a bit of bloat there. Can there be an option to sort them by upcasted spells first and then your normal spells or vice versa? At the moment, they're just sorted alphabetically. Again, this could be solved by the first thing I mentioned which is a custom drag section) like how the very text box I used to write this overly long feedback post has!
This sheet in general seems to favor tons of swiping and clicking to view information that was clearly visible before. Some of the design choices here are questionable, but I do like the spell list, I just wish it wasn't tiny.
Also - Not sure if a bug or by design there is a strange interaction with items like Wand of Fireballs. You can view the Wand of Fireballs spell in your "Spell" list and upcast it which pops open the sidebar showing the description and damage of the spell. It does also show the charge cost but it has a tiny small number showing how many charges are remaining. To reset the cost (if you made a mistake, took it back, or for whatever reason) you can't edit it from the pop up that shows the spell when you click it, you need to go to "Items" > scroll to find it > then click the boxes to reset. There is also no reset button on the pane of that to just reset that item back to no charges used.
Changing Window Sizes
When changing the window size you remove sections of the Character Sheet and give a small button to go to the section you want. This is quite annoying and creates so much more unecessary clicking and moving around. You also lose the wonderful UI that you had for the spells in the spell section and go to a super long scroll window, where again, you can't see how many sorcery points you have. I now have to click to move to each portion of my character sheet over and over to swap between everything instead of having certain CSS boxes just... move below on the main screen. I am not on mobile, this design shouldn't be there for desktop.
Example of Resizing Window Behavior
Welcome to ClickNDBeyond!
Example of Spell List losing it's main draw (and no way to see your metamagic because it's apparently under "Actions" even though that makes no sense):
Super long spell list - still no metamagic or sorcery point count. So cast away without knowing what you got! DM won't care if you waste his time!
All in all, my main gripe is that it's too small and resizing the window itself to make it seem normal changes the entire layout to something else entirely un-enjoyable. I enjoyed the previous version due to the large size of the text and how it was scroll-able. There are a lot of pluses to this version and I think the main thing is is to just let us resize the boxes. I don't want to need to zoom in to view the text because as is, I can barely read it.
For me with this character sheet revamp - DnDBeyond lost a bit of it's draw. I use this while playing in Roll20 and I resize the DnDBeyond screen to 3/4 of the my screen and the other part the Roll20 character sheet. This resizing behavior has just added in so much unnecessary clicking and interaction with the window and important information isn't visible such as limited use class resources like Sorcery Points or Ki that are just hidden in other panes.
I've just played a 6 hour game with the new sheet on my laptop.
I've tried several themes but the line that states my progress in the current level is always nigh-invisible.
As a wizard, I really wish more spells would be auto included in the combat section.
I would also like better sorting as I mostly use the racial Produce Flame which is at the bottom.
I also think spells should be included as possible actions in the actions segment.
And maybe have an optional spell view of just "All Prepared".
There are also some equipment items I care more about and some I care less about so better filtering or sorting there would be appreciated.
I really really wish the sidebar scaled to my window view and not the whole page. It's annoying to scroll the whole page when I just want to scroll the info sidebar.
The notes section should be it's own section. That's my player knowledge and I always want it open for referencing.
Basically, any improvement on note taking would be nice.
It'll also be great if subsections remembered where I last clicked instead of resetting to the first subsection.
Adding equipment and spells too are still a bit of a hassle. I would appreciate if these could even have a big sub-window instead of a tiny sidebar.
Because equipment still doesn't tell costs in the adding section and I still have to first add something and then subtract currency.
And spells are still submenu after submenu after submenu.
Access to familiars is still a problem. I have to keep that separately and would really like a button or a drop down or a popup stat block or anything.
I'm pretty sure it's based on the with of the screen in pixels. 1200px was chosen as the minimum width because at that point the boxes start to squish together. It is also a common "desktop" breakpoint in Web design.
If you can zoom the web page out on your tablet, you should be able to see it in desktop layout.
Unfortunately, because there is no "desktop mode" available at all for the character sheet when using a mobile device, I can't zoom out on my iPad: trying to do so results in thumbnails of all of my tabs appearing. This is not normal Safari iOS behavior, and the zoom works properly on other websites and if I have the forums pulled up here (and have forced the forums to show in mobile view). But it cannot be done on the character sheet, even if I have tried to force it to revert to desktop view.
With the previous character sheet, if my iPad was in landscape position, I could see the desktop view (or something close to it) instead of the mobile view automatically. Now the desktop view is completely unavailable to me.

I also started an Obsidian Portal page for my new campaign. They have a setting, under Advanced, that allows you to change the width of the pages. It's oh so very convenient. Maybe you should look into that?
Have you guys thought about making a way to give an item from one players character sheet to another in a campaign that way all custom notes and mode can be transferred to the other player in same campaign?
So I finally got a chance to look at this on desktop and I still think the spells area and most of the tabbed areas are just clunky. It is going to take a lot longer for people to figure out what they want to do now. I also absolutely hate how I can't see my entire list of spell slots without clicking on a gear, that is simply bad design.
The currency is in a spot that I will have to remind the players every single time.
The little checkbox next to the equipment is really unintuitive, I don't know why we can't say "wield".
Switching to mobile when the screen is shrunk is a bad call because mobile is still completely unusable. Having to tap a bunch of buttons is the first thing they teach you in basic web design.
You guys basically took a digital tool then forced people to make it full screen to use pen and paper for taking notes or have to tap between a bunch of menus to find anything.
I really want a classic view button. Please put in a classic view button.
I am in two campaigns that use inspiration that we players can accumulate and use at will through the campaign. You made a lot of great changes to the character sheet, but it would be nice if you added the option under Inspiration to have more than just "the one" inspiration.
Perhaps even include different forms of inspiration (bardic, DM, etc)

The iPad Pro with that screen resolution does indeed use the desktop view in landscape, looking at it right now. The issue is with a standard or mini iPad - that's where it goes to 1024. Not sure what "Goldilocks" is intended to refer to there - it was the base size we designed for based on the screen resolution data we have for the last year.
For the other point, there are standards being used, they just might not be recognizable to you. This can certainly still be an issue if the standards aren't helpful, but I don't want there to be the perception that we didn't use target standards. We're already adjusting some areas of the sheet to make it clearer what is interactive or can be clicked.
Thanks!

I'd like to suggest that rogue sneak attack show up in the combat section. That would be nice in the PDF export as well.

This can certainly still be an issue if the standards aren't helpful, but I don't want there to be the perception that we didn't use target standards. We're already adjusting some areas of the sheet to make it clearer what is interactive or can be clicked.
Thanks!
