On that note, why can you choose whatever proficiencies you want for your background? Is that RAW? There should at least be a way for DMs to disable that limitless option.
Hmm, that's for customizing a background though, in which case I'd probably rename it as it's become a new background all its own.
Anyway, I'd still, as a DM, like the option to turn off customizing backgrounds.
Yes, but customising a background is RAW. It's not even a variant rule like the human that uses a feat + skill proficiency but core. If you're not allowing that, then that's a personal house rule of yours.
You can just say to your players that they can't alter backgrounds and create your own custom backgrounds to share with your players.

Just making a request. Curse needn't heed it if they don't want to.
Yes, DM can definitely decide who can get what languages. Played a campaign with a swashbuckling rogue who could speak Aquan.
Aquan is on the list on page 123 in PHB. It's a dialect of Primordial. Your rogue should've picked Primordial because then he or she could've known the other three dialects as well.
Huh. Never noticed that. I guess I could read a little more sometimes.
Under attacks, should have racial attacks too. Also, when equipping items, you should be restricted when trying to equip too many weapons. Right now, you can have unlimited weapons equipped. Can't wait for August 15th!!!!!

If you read even more, you might come across the passage--I think it's in the DGM--that says that people who speak different dialects of Primordial can understand each other.

I actually don't own a DMG, and I'm not a DM. But that is some handy knowledge.
Variant human only lets me select Grappler and Sverfneblin Magic as my feat
Those are the only two feats available currently, as the beta version only uses the free reference material WotC provides. Being able to access Deep Gnome Magic as any other race other than Deep Gnome is a bug and will be fixed.
Variant human only lets me select Grappler and Sverfneblin Magic as my feat
For the beta, only the rules and options provided in the D&D 5th edition SRD , D&D 5th edition Basic Rules, Elemental Evil Companion are available in Beyond. Once the full platform launches later this summer, the core rule books and others will be available for purchase, and the content within will be available for those that purchase, or have access through a DM's subscription.
Currently while trying to edit my character, it keeps getting stuck on the description page. And it doesn't want to change pages from the top bar, only with the side arrows. I expected a bit more polish at this stage so close to publishing. The equipment manager is a mess, spell manager lacks any and all instructions and some of it is just bad design. Any more updates expected before launch?

Staff are constantly updating the tools - both the equipment manager and the spell selection are both going through redevelopment at the moment.
Excellent. I'll be poking around then. DDB has a lot of promise if they can get all the systems up and working together. I was pleasantly surprised when the character creator could count the AC from class and item extra bonuses correctly.
I think the character builder is great, it will help with all of my D&D campaigns, but I do feel that a great addition would be the ability to create homebrew races/subraces and be able to share them with the community. This feature would be especially helpful in D&D campaigns that have a more modern approach game, and for DMs (like myself) that want to really personalize the game. Other than that, I believe the character creator is great.
I had a chance to use the character sheet in play last night. For the most part it worked well, but there are some things I would like to see improved:
-I'd love it if the "cast' button did more than just track spell slots, but also rolled dice and noted effects. For example, my druid used Shillelagh; it would have been great if that could have changed the attack info for my quarterstaff. Or if it rolled damage for magic missile, or healing, etc.
-The bottom rung of "tiles" (on a desktop or table) should be the second rung, and the second rung the bottom. I need access to spells, equipment & limited use equipment more times in play than personality, appearance, etc. Someone mentioned letting individual users decide placement. This would be great.
-Leveling up is a pain; there needs to be a clear "level up" button on the character sheet (and the manage xp sheet/popup). I shouldn't have to go through the whole edit character process and scroll down/hunt for the things that get updated.
-when using manual xp, and added rolled hp for a new level, the ui is someone confusing. I think there should be separate boxes for each level's rolls. There should also be prefilled boxes showing the constitution modifier at each level. Similarly, the total HP (including all rolls and con additions) should be shown here. Every time I've leveled up HP (either when creating a higher level character or last night when leveling up), I have to sit there and think it through again: "Oh, yeah, the number in the box is what I've already rolled for previous levels. No, I don't add the constitution modifier. ok, lets apply and see if it added stuff up right..." This is clunky, at least from my perspective. So much of DDB works so much more smoothly.
I know at least some of this has been mentioned before, just adding my voice so the devs have a sense of how many people would like to see these things changed. I appreciate the responsiveness of the developers to all our requests and feed back.
It would be grand if, when building my character, my previous selections would appear in a sidebar next to the current window. For example, when I'm choosing ability scores, it'd be nice to have displayed what race I've chosen and the racial ability score increases. That way, I can "see" my character coming together. Near the end it might display something like this:
It appears that HP Maximum is not updating when a character's Level changes. I have a Level 4 Fighter character sheet, but Max HP is still 12 (base +2).
Thanks!

Another thing I noticed is you can add Exhaustion as a condition but you can't track the various levels of exhaustion.

It says that above the list of languages in the PHB. Is there a list of dialects somewhere?

The equipment manager is undergoing a fairly large revision, so expect that to change soon. :)
Also, yes, there are plenty of updates to land before launch. There's nearly a month to go yet!
