If you create and publish a race with subraces, and then you get feedback on that race and you want to change it to make it better or balance it, the way your system is currently working forces the creator to break the rules you set up for homebrew publishing. Specifically this rule:
"Please do not submit variations of the same submission to public homebrew."
The reason this happens is because when you publish something, your site gives you no option to delete that publication. I did not know this. This is not clearly communicated anywhere that I could find easily. I wrote a race, it took me 8 hours, and then I published it so I could get feedback (Apparently you are not supposed to do this. What? So how the heck am I going to get feedback? Let people log onto my account? I think there is another option for feedback, like invitations or something, but I had no earthly idea what that was when I posted, it's not clearly communicated at all). I cannot take it down. And if I submit an updated version with corrections, it seems to me that it violates that rule. So now I am stuck with a bad version of that race unless I report it, which seems to me to be pretty dangerous to my account, and I don't want to risk it.
So before you begin to say "Published Homebrew is meant to already by playtested and reviewed thoroughly," I'm going to premptively respond to that.
That rule is not stated clearly enough. I did not find it until after it was too late. I see a lot of other posts about it so it IS a problem.
The other problem I have is a separate issue, but nonetheless also frustrating.
When I create a new version of a race that has subraces, THE SUBRACES DO NOT CARRY OVER AND I HAVE TO TYPE THEM IN MANUALLY AGAIN!! This is incredibly frustrating.
WHY DON'T THE SUBRACES CARRY OVER WITH THE NEW VERSION!?!?!? There is literally no reason that they shouldn't do that. It baffles my mind that this is a problem. Give me the code and I will outsource it through Github and have it fixed in like 3 days guaranteed. I know of at least three to four people that could fix this problem quickly or at least point me towards someone with a solution. If there's any problem I need someone to respond to, it is this problem.
I want to create a LITE version of the subrace with ONE FEATURE for each sub race removed. Why do I have to retype the other 6 features every time I want to do something like that? Sure I can copy and paste manually and remake everything, but it takes me like 2 hours to do that. It could take only a few minutes if everything, including subraces, was copied over. But when you make a new version of the race it doesn't copy subraces and currently it tells you that no where at all. It just surprises you with that fact.
ALSO! The subraces do not group correctly in character Creator, meaning if I want them to show up next to each other, I have to put the name of the overall race in front of the subrace so they show up alphabetically next to each other.
Also, while you can create a new version AFTER it has been published, why can't you create a new version BEFORE it has been published?
Why is everything nested so much? Why are there features nested within nested features. Could you just put that stuff on one page please? Why do I have to give a title and a short description before I decide to make an action, and why do I have to make the action before I can give it limited uses? That's like four layers of nesting that are totally unnecessary.
Bold is now stuck on and I can't turn it off at this point in my post, and at the end of every paragraph, my cursor randomly jumps back up to the last line.ke this.

Just for clarity, I tried to type "like this."
This website is almost the best website ever. It just needs some severe debugging and a major UI overhaul for homebrew.
Thank you for listening, I know this was a rant. I'm not trying to be mean or hostile. I love you people for making this website.
You are supposed to "create a new version" of the homebrew. They automatically group up so they don't make multiple entries when you do that.
Yeah so I did that already, did you read my post?
They DO NOT automatically group up and nothing I could figure out would make them group up.
When I "created a new version" after publishing, I COULD NOT group the new versions of my subraces with the new version of my race. They would not group together no matter what I did. I just spent 8 hours dealing with that.
If the solution is just as easy as you say, please describe how to do that in detail.
Act like you are talking to a preschooler. Maybe you can save me hours and hours of work.
The different versions group up in the homebrew search results. I think the are stuck separate in your creations (I barely homebrew and have not made new versions).

Okay good to know that my complaint was legitimate.
I know enough coding to know that this problem could be solved with some debugging if they took the time to do it.
As someone who's trying to make different takes on the lizardfolk race, I have to agree. It's a shame that two years have passed and there's still zero light being shined on this topic. I just now updated my group of lizards, which have about 7 or 8 subraces, I forget right now. I updated the main race, but now that I've done that, none of the subraces or variant races (which are honestly very similar, variant just means it changes things about the races, where as a normal subrace just adds on, but if i'm honest that's basically the same thing for the most part, but i digress) have transferred over to this new version. Even when I made new version of those races too. So I'm at a loss. I'd rather not remake every race from the ground up again, but I guess if I have to I will? I would really really rather not. And I'd appreciate help on this topic. But it seems there's none to give. Dnd beyond just kind of seems to "be like this" for a lot of the homebrew things. Like i cant make mundane items for example, only magic ones and then call them 'common' and just communicate that to my players.
Edit: Also, when I tried to publish my race, it said It had no subraces or variants attached to it, and cannot be published as such. Its almost a joke that it just forgets all the subraces under the race. There is no just "Elf" race, and then high elves and wood elves etc are just other options. You're only choose from high elves and wood elves and so on. This is silly.
Oh, and I can upvote comments infinitely, but reloading the page causes it to reset. Dnd beyond fellas, Idk whats going on where you fellows are, but I and many unspoken people would really appreciate that this is the kind of stuff that's worked on pertaining to this site, as opposed to more dice! Yay!
I'd seriously prefer the sight work better. Like how for some reason most custom images and icons from homebrew refuse to load, and using the rollable dice feature lags the browser to all hell for a good 10 seconds. It makes me feel like i'm showing an incompetent site to my friends. We all love it, but these are some pretty glaring issues.
These are some of the reasons it is best practice to not publish until all of the playtesting and editing is complete.Republishing is very much not ideal.
Its sad to see that in 2022 this is still an issue. I just had this dilemma come up with me. I was unaware that "publishing" work locked the race so you basically couldnt edit it without recreating the subraces again. Luckily enough it was my first race / subraces so its not too detailed and shouldn't take too long to recreate but still thats annoying.
IKR! I just started using hephaistos for Starfinder and im pretty dumbfounded how great the site is by default. Its more bare bones and lacks a lot of woven in homebrewing, but its amazing in other areas. For what it is (you can even put ammo in your weapons so its automatic!), at least.

A helpful hint for others who might have this problem that I figured out.
Put the race major before the title of the subrace... for instance...
Elf - Wood
Elf - Drow
Elf - High
this will group them together in the character builder.
Everything else is still a pain in the rear.
