Put it this way: I'm not willing to ignite Forum Riot X.0 on the word of one D&D influencer who has actively been a total firebrand over the OGL thing saying "DDB WANTS TO MAKE YOU PAY" without any information whatsoever of what the extra pay actually entails. Even Shorts himself said "the highest tier is 30pm", without any information on what the tiers below that might be.
Is it concerning? Yes. Is it an issue I'd like clarity on sooner rather than later? Yes. Am I going to start burning down my house over it and shrieking naked through the streets decrying DDB as thieves, murders, brigands, and tax evaders? No. I'm going to wait until we have a clearer picture of what's actually happening. This isn't like the OGL situation where we had a semi-decent picture of the issue and a clear motivation to get in front of it as quickly as possible. We have essentially no picture at this time, and frankly the issue is a nonissue for people right now because everybody already canceled their subs and swore to give up on DDB as a service so why does anybody care.
One thing I will mention. This new bit from D&D Shorts mentions "Tiers". It could be - and this is an increasingly faint hope - that DDB is not necessarily planning on taking away from existing users but instead on adding new tiers above/between Hero and Master to give people more options. Mostly because at this point with the community already feeling as burned and ruffled as it is, taking away people's subscriptions and asking them to pay drastically more for the same content is...not a winning play. Not when half the damn board is already dropping their sub over the OGL thing. Making subscribing more painful and making not being subscribed more punitive is gonna result in a fresh hemmorhage of people, especially for a feature as fundamentally pointless as "A.I. DMs"
I think you are correct, and D&D Beyond will be adding a fourth tier that gives access to the VTT and AI scripted content for $30.
I’m also on the record with Hasbro doubling the price for all of the existing tiers and with removing shared content access from free subscriptions (after some introductory period). Under normal circumstances, the community wouldn’t be happy with these two changes, but I think most would accept a $12 DM tier and a $6 player tier. I think that this is appropriately priced for what the customer is getting BTW. We might grumble about $6 a month to use shared D&D Beyond content, but how many would cancel just for this reason?
Unfortunately for Hasbro, these aren’t normal circumstances with the way they handled OGL 2.0 and the extremely angry community backlash Hasbro created. Now, I see very few accepting this type of price increase.
All Hasbro had to do was keep supporting OGL1.0a, increase the sub prices, license 3PP for use within D&D Beyond, and then start printing money.
... Am I going to start burning down my house over it and shrieking naked through the streets decrying DDB as thieves, murders, brigands, and tax evaders? .
Why do you always have to resort to hypocritical ridicule and insult to try to make points?
No, I don't think I'd calmly accept paying the same for my current subscription that I would for a Netflix account. Since I still have to buy all my content over and above my subscription fee. DDB is useful, but it is in no way comparable to a full-flight streaming service and should not monetize itself the same way. Your monthly stipend buys you dramatically less on DDB than it does on any streaming service, and Netflix doesn't make you buy your TV shows separately from your subscription either.
Make no mistake. I'm remaining in a wait-and-see mode, but if DDB tries to take away what I'm already buying and force me to pay double what I'm currently paying to get it back, there will be Words.

Unfortunately, given the shytstorm they’ve created, we’ll never know how the market would have responded to a doubling of price.
Given that roughly 1/10th of the subs are master tier (based on % of DMs to players), I would think that 90% of the user base would say they’re not going to pay $6 a month to use D&D Beyond but would quickly adopt to the new price given the quality of the tool set.
People complain about $5 dollar gas as well, but most still fill up their low gas mileage cars.
Excuse you. Not everyone is required to throw away their account, swear off playing D&D ever again, and immediately start attacking anyone still playing/making content for 5e out of misguided fervor to "PROTECT THE OGL" by actively sabotaging the very people the OGL was allowing to create. That's not "fence riding", that's hoping the issue actually ends up solved and I can continue to enjoy the third-party ecosystem we all went to war to protect in the first place.

Because they don't even believe their points fully. They're trying to fence ride.
to be fair, yurei was one of the first ones on the forums saying we should do something about the ogl situation, and still got attacked by many users as have others, to the point theres at least one fellow sending extremely hateful dms to folk they disagree with
Yurei isnt overeacting, folk are tired of the extreme reaction from a part of the community that is just trying to light fires to light fires
Yeah the situation is concerning and possibly really shitty at best, but its "iffy" information at best at the moment because there was faked information much like this 6 months ago, that got near the same amount of vitriol and hate as whats happening right now, except not every firebrand came out of the wood works to try to burn it down
we dont know how much of what dnd shorts is saying is actually going to be confirmed true as well, for all we know, someone could have taken the fakes at wotc and spread it, thinking it was true, sure the ogl situation loaned him credibility among the community but hes still an outsider to the actual ddb staff and wotc staff, and may just be reacting to something like we are

There a time for mediated, calm discourse - generally, when both parties are willing to communicate and both recognize the others relative influence over the situation. Hasbro/WotC doesn't see things this way, so this path is non-viable.
Hence torches and pitchforks, hysteria, and dramatic displays. These will get attention, and if Hasbro/WotC wants to avoid a constant loss of customers they will address it. This is the path that is appropriate, because a big part of the current issue is that Hasbro/WotC doesn't respect the influence of their customers.
Personal attacks and threats are, of course, universally vile. Currently though, those seem to be most taking the form of trying to dehumanize people that are reasonably upset and taking reasonably dramatic - and attention grabbing - action.
There'll be a time for calm discourse after WotC walks back it's plans of ignoring customers and using its market position to try and put its former allies out of business.
Riot when you have a reason to riot. Don't riot because somebody else told you you might have a reason to riot in the near future so you should just start rioting now.
If the community wants me to stop calling them out on acting like children throwing a tantrum, they can stop acting like children throwing a tantrum. Which, to their credit, many people have done. You're actually allowed to talk about D&D on the front page of this forum again, only about a third of the threads are some variation on "THE OGL THING IS KILLING D&D FOREVER AND IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IT YOU'RE A CORPO SHILL AND YOU SHOULD DIE". I am perfectly willing to tell Wizards and DDB to get bent when they merit so being told. I am simply also willing to tell the same to community blowhards and instigators trying to hurt the game more than it's already hurting.

My current issue is that I don't think Hasbro/WotC has learned anything. They are going to walk back changes to try to mitigate the anger and then whoever they sucker into the OGL 2.0 will be stuck as they simply reintroduce those very same features. I will admit this has not been confirmed but the pattern of behavior fits which makes me fearful is that they can make changes to the OGL 2.0 with 30 days notice. That alone should be enough for people to give WotC the middle finger.

The OGL is killing D&D, it is dying on the vine. Based on my personal observations, booksellers and game stores are already stocking out of PF and other 3rd party products. Everyone at the game store I visited yesterday were there to purchase alternatives to Hasbro products. How do I know? Because they were talking about it, loudly. And nobody at the game store is going to defend Hasbro.
Seriously, this is not just a movement on this forum. You can't go to every game store and tell people "Hey Guys, calm down, I am sure Hasbro will make a good OGL soon..."
Too late, the cat is out of the bag. That bird has flown.
Also, I bet a million dollars that the leaked slide that you backtracked on in August was totally legit. Honestly, if I was making a presentation on the future of a digital subscription platform for D&D I would have also put a $30 monthly top price. When you make a business case, you always present best case. Funny how you let yourself be persuaded that it was fake, just because someone said so. I mean, what did you think would happen, they would confess? LOL!
If they up the sub price for the existing tiers, it's not going to go great, but they'll probably get away with it if it's just a few dollars. If they require a monthly sub for players, that's the actual end. One person paying for all the material so that their friends can play is part of the foundational culture of d&d. I can basically guarantee that my groups will stop using D&D beyond if they are forced to pay as a player.
You want me to cough up more than I pay for my streaming service(s) for a game that relies on paper and dice? We played for decades without dndbeyond, we'll do so again.
$30/Month is roughly double what a World of Warcraft subscription costs... and you only get 1/millionth of the content.
WOTC is free to charge whatever they want, more power to them. But I don't see $30 worth of value in what they are offering.
Oh! Don't worry! They intend to give you content drops! Don't you feel appreciated? Honored? For real though, this entire idea is just.. so,so,sooooo bad. They are essentially pouring jet fuel on the raging Forrest fire that is their brand.

Dying on the vine based on a piece of anecdotal evidence, ok.
Game stores are a fraction of their sales. The PHB is still #1 in its category on Amazon. The top non-D&D book is Call of Cthulhu, ranked 22. The reason those game stores sold out of non-D&D books is because they probably only had 2 copies to begin with. Yes, the folks shopping at game stores are unhappy, but don’t you think those are the same people who post on forums like this one? The hardcore community is not very large. Most people who play don’t use 3pp supplements and probably don’t know this is going on. You think people picking up a starter set at Target (try and find pathfinder there) even know what a 3pp is? The satanic panic didn’t kill D&D in the 80’s, gross corporate mismanagement didn’t kill it in the 90’s, 4e didn’t kill it in to 10’s. You really think this is going to do it? Remember a few years ago when everyone was going to delete their Facebook account over shady corporate practices, how did that work out?
I’m upset, too. But righteous indignation burns hot and fast and then goes out quickly. Yes, some of the people who left are done with the game. I can understand that, and I respect their choice. But of those, some were going to leave anyway. And there will be new players to replace them, who come in after this and won’t care, because they didn’t know what it was like before. And others who left will end up coming back. They’ll play pf2 and realize it’s not for them (some will love it, and I wish them well, it’s a great game). But after the movie, or bg3, or 1D&D comes out, they’ll want to scratch that itch. It’s why boycotts rarely work. Many don’t participate, many who do break them after a short period.
To the topic at hand, I think a $30/month fee is absurd, and there’s no chance I’ll pay it. But I’ll still buy the books in hardcover and play the game. If I can’t use the tools here, whipping up something in excel will be easy enough. Or just notebook paper and a pencil. That said, if people want to pay that much, hey, it’s their money.
You've always needed a sub for homebrew, at least within the platform (nothing is stopping you from writing your homebrew on a piece of paper or something outside it.)
you need a sub for 'other people's released homebrew' anything you input yourself and keep private can be used on free
I have absolutely no intentions of using any VTT ever, so as far as I’m concerned they can charge whatever they want for their VTT because I ain’t ever gonna use it.
