When it asks about the VTT they make it impossible not to make a positive choice. I suspect this is so they will have positive survey results to use in ads.
No. This is clearly a marketing research survey. This is not so they can put survey results into ads. This is so they can tell what words and feelings resonate, and use them to help target their ads and other marketing efforts. That’s why they want positive choices. They want to know what people like best about it, so they can focus their messaging around those themes.
there's an email survey that went out this morning-ish. took about ten minutes to complete and was definitely a marketing based input survey. i assume it went out to account emails.
I think the original poster is referring to a section of the survey where there are multiple questions that you have to select the "most unique" and "most appealing" (I may have the wording slightly off) of three options related to the VTT. None of the things that they list are even remotely unique to their upcoming VTT, so yeah, that was kind of frustrating since it forces you to give an answer. That said, this clearly is a marketing survey, I don't expect results will be used in their actual marketing materials in regard to content (except possibly using their own content from the survey if people respond particularly well to it).
Did anyone else notice if you input past a certain age on the very first actual question on demographics (3rd question) the survey thanked you and exited.
No input desired from older players or DMs...
My survey lasted 20 seconds...based on my answer to age.
I’m getting up there, too, and it took my results. I can’t put my age, but I think I can tell you I remember disco when it was on the radio unironically, and the Carter administration. Barely, but I remember them. Probably they had enough of us geezers already.

Not really, it just gives you three statements and asks which you find the Most Compelling between them. "Most Compelling" doesn't necessarily mean Positive - you can hate three things and dislike one less than the others. They're trying to rank and rate which features people care the most about. Seems like a better survey would be to rank each thing out of 5 or something like that, but whatever they think will inform their design I guess

I am going to remember that.
Do you actually know that they exited your survey because of your age or you just wildly jumping to conclusions? Why would they even do that?
I'm pretty old and just did the survey just fine. They aren't ignoring old people, no need to get all paranoid
I took the survey along side someone far younger than myself with considerably different views on life (we are friends and have played together in the past), and they were the exact same surveys. I am no spring chicken, started playing in the early 80's. I agree with others that this is a marketing survey and by not completing it you are doing yourself and others with similar views no favors. There are a few places in the survey you get to say what you want in 55 characters or less.
I am not fond of some of the choices WotC has made recently, but this survey is not one.

Then they can't really complain when some of us "geezers" decide not to give them any more of our money.
I haven’t heard them complain about that. And the last time they released player data, it showed people over 40 were a small and shrinking part of the player base. This was a few years ago, so, probably there’s even fewer of us. But hey, by all means, stop buying their stuff. Not sure why I would care what you buy or not.

I'm 51 and got the full survey just fine. Your experience is a wildcard but they may not be deliberately trying to count out us older folks.
As a marketer this survey felt more like a product team working with marketing to fill internal slides with results so executives will approve the next set of features.
"We asked players and DM's what they wanted and they chose the things we want to do next. Great success!"
It has literally been said that older players (Especially white males) should have less input and control over the hobby. Makes one suspicious. Not sus enough to send in the Pinkertons mind you.

It's not the arrow with my name on it that worries me. It's the arrow that says, "To whom it may concern".
If that 'older players (especially white males) should have less input and control over the hobby' has, as I suspect, an implied 'than they traditionally have' then I wouldn't disagree. There has been a lot of pretty horrible gate keeping and exclusionary behavior around D&D in the past, so I think trying to focus on input from voices that have been historically under-represented (if not outright ignored) is a good thing. I don't think that excluding people from taking the survey, regardless of age, race, etc. is a good idea, personally I would take everyone and then determine how much weight to give to various demographics, rather than cutting people out completely. I will add that I am in the "old, white dude" contingent myself but for whatever reason it didn't cut me off.
You said it.
They didn't say they wanted older white males to have less input. They said they wanted other people to have more input, which is very different, and all to the good. It's not a pie we're talking about here. Letting someone else have more doesn't mean less for you.

Can you provide evidence of this exclusionary behavior? D&D has a reputation for such but it's a reputation with as much basis in fact as it's reputation for turning players towards ‘Devil-worship.’ And is it not pretty horrible gatekeeping for some newer to the hobby to want to make everything so political and turn people away?
I know you're both smart enough to understand that this isn't gonna go anywhere useful. Wouldn't you agree that we'll all have a nicer day if we don't get into it again?
What's the colour of your skin got to do with price of tea in China? The size of your bank account isn't particularly relevant either.
The younger players are literally the future. If they attract a 90 year old to the game, they might sell content for a couple of years. If they attract a 20 year old, they could well be selling content for decades as well as much more influence on their future posterity. That's not just one edition either, but in the region of 7. It makes sense for them to target the younger players rather than those who are not so youthful.
That said, given that others in the older generations have gotten through the survey...I'm not convinced that age is the intentional cut off factor. Either there is more to it, or it's a bug.

I think I’ll give my vote on this by not filling it out.

I have not received the survey. Then again, I haven't bought anything recently. I s'pose that makes sense to me.
The drop from the survey age is 65 or 66.
