So, like the title says, I'm recreating the sun blade from curse of strahd. I just finished the campaign and have the sword in hand. I also have the helm of brilliance, which is why I am trying to recreate the sword rather than just use the one available on DND beyond(I do have the book purchased). The helm of brilliance allows you to light a weapon on fire and do an extra 1d6 fire dmg on attacks with it. I have figured out how to add the 1d6 fire dmg to homebrew creations, but I have not figured out how to change a longsword from 1d8 slashing to 1d8 radiant. Any experience with this? Thanks in advance
If you copy the sun blade you should be able to take a look at how it works and the "Replace Damage Type" modifier can be used.
Is there a reason you don't want to use the Sun Blade as a base? I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to accomplish, given both the Sun Blade and Helm of Brilliance are in the Basic Rules.
The Sunsword from CoS is essentially just a fancy sentient sun blade just like the one in the basic rules. Just use the sun blade as your template, copy/paste in the special text from the Sunsword that makes it special, and then add the fire damage to it. Fair warning though, the system by itself won’t actually roll the fire damage automatically along with the regular damage from the sword. You will either have to roll that separately or else use the Beyond20 extension.
+1 for IamSposta's response; that's what we did in our campaign.

Yes, they are both there for me to use in dnd beyond, but the fire damage is not added to my sword automatically. I would like it to be there since i activate this ability daily.

Yes, I understood what you were saying, I was just answering the question. I also cannot figure out how to copy an existing item to then modify. That being said, I did test whether or not it would add the extra fire dmg. I created a weapon with that 1d6 fire added, and you are right, it does not add that anyway. So, the whole venture is pointless anyway. Thank you for your responses, extemely helpful!

You don’t “copy” something to modify it, you “use it as a template.” When you go to the screen to make a magic item: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/homebrew/creations/create-magic-item), you are presented with two Options. You can either use an existing item as a template, or you can create one from scratch.

This is a signature. It was a simple signature. But it has been upgraded.
