Wow I was surprised by the e-mail. I get delaying the physical product.
But WHY DELAY THE DNDBEYOND RELEASE!?
They say "we’ve aligned both physical and digital editions to a single timeline". WHY? You have the product ready for online release, let the customers have it. This is a TERRIBLE decision.
It's kind of ridiculous the digital release is being delayed, which immediately makes me suspicious of something weird going on with the product. Either there is something they're redacting or changing last minute. Is this also going to push back other products down the pipeline? I hope not, I feel like we're in a content drought, despite the new rules coming out and reinstating some interest in the system. It got a fresh coat of paint, but nothing new to go with it.
Release the digital product on time. Let people play your game.
Wizards has consistently said that their primary method of sales is not Amazon, not digital, and not other big box stores - it is local game stores. That is why they give game stores extra bonuses, such as earlier releases than big box stores, same day release as digital early access, special covers, etc. Wizards recognizes their symbiotic relationship with game stores and works to provide them some additional boons to stay competitive.
Applying a little critical thinking to this situation, it is hardly difficult to figure out why digital is being delayed. Eberron is a huge release and one game stores are likely counting on - it is a popular plane, unveils a revised Artificer class, and is the first major product for 5.24. This is something game stores want - and they want to sell very well.
Releasing the product early on digital hurts game stores - for those who want the highly anticipated new content as early as possible, it drives them away from early-access game store purchases and to digital purchases. That is very likely to hurt LGS sales long term, as people might not be inclined to purchase a second, physical copy if they already rushed to digital.
It sucks to wait a little longer, but Wizards is doing the right thing here for the community at large by preserving tools the stores we love count on. This seems firmly a case where players are shooting off complaints based on their own desires, ignoring the bigger picture.
This is very disappointing. I appreciate delaying the physical release, but delaying the digital release is a slap in the face. I was all geared up to start a new Eberron campaign in August--session zero scheduled and everything--now I've got nothing!
Catastrophizing is a cognitive distortion. Delaying the digital release ensures that physical sales are impacted as little as possible which, as has been pointed out, helps to protect the most vulnerable stakeholders in this entire situation: the LGS.
It is annoying, but not a disaster. It will be alright, this is not one of the things worth worrying over.
The pillow mimic on the other hand.... yeah, that is worth losing sleep over.

That's just wasting perfectly good pillows, a simple dagger throw or shot with a bow or crossbow is enough to sus out a mimic. Of course you need proficiency with a sewing kit to fix the holes made, but at the end of the day you're still saving coin replacing pillows
That’s why I always attempt to cast Eldritch Blast on my pillows before I sleep. Though now I have to make sure I’m using the legacy version.
Can always use Poison Spray, it only targets creatures in both 2014 and 2024, and even if it could target objects, real pillows are immune to poison damage.
In addition to the practical reasons given above for delaying the digital version, I’d hate to think about the conspiracy theorists getting ahold of a digital first release: The books weren’t really damaged, this is just a test for the ultimate plan of moving to all digital releases and not printing books anymore.

Sadly I have already seen people saying that it isn't delayed due to a print run issues but in reality they need to rewrite the book due the 2024 rules failing so badly. I kid you not.

Please, that's two castings of Mending, tops. No need to bother with sewing.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Great response Caerwyn - I'm as disappointed as anyone (playing a warforged Artificer currently) but I understand the decision to hold digital release too. If I were a paper-only player and found out people were getting something online 5 months earlier than me, I would be PISSED.
It's normal for WotC to do this. I'd prefer companies stuck to their dates when possible...but it's not unexpected that they'd delay both when one is in trouble.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
I’m honestly just glad it’ll be out by Christmas. I have an idea for a holiday-themed one shot that features a Battle Smith with a Furby steel defender, a Warforged Monk that’s a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robot, and a half elf Devotion Paladin named Buddy

Agreed. I get not wanting to ship books with bad covers, but why not release the digital stuff on time. At least to those who preordered.
RELEASE THE HOUNDS....I mean the digital.
Can you say "CONTENT SHARING"?
If Digital delivery is tied to physical delivery, then why have digital delivery?
Did any of you agree to tie the two together?
This is exactly what I'm saying. Very poor judgement on their part. I swear they can't make a good decision to save their lives.

That said... maybe release the Artificer class on Beyond on time? It's gotta be mostly programmed and ready to go.
I hate this. I was just about to start a new campaign with Artificers and mobile Bastions.
