I have an account and I will be the DM. I will eventually buy the be all end all account 'of accounts once things are finalized and opened after Beta. My question is this...
As a test I built my wife's, as of yet, unplayed first level cleric that she will be using. Can I transfer the character to her once she opens her account or do we have to get her to remake the character on her own?
Or can she sign in on my account and we both be on at the same time? Thanks
If you start a campaign and invite her to it, she can add her character to your campaign and then you can edit it. So, she could make a completely blank slate, pretty much, and just add it and you fill in all the rest. You'll need a Master Tier subscription though, I think.

The functionality to transfer characters between accounts would be great down the line. I can see it working for not just pregen characters but also situations that arise sometimes like players taking over NPCs when their PC dies & the like.
Yeah, I'm not saying that you can just that it would be a nice thing to be able to do down the line. Who knows if it ever becomes a thing. I'd think likely not as there would likely be issues where one account has different access to materials than others meaning they had characters that relied on something the person receiving the character didn't have but it's a nice idea at least.
I would also like to see the ability to export characters and be able to import them as needed for different game sessions. Or even to open them later to print for a local game. I have a game I am running for family members and not all of them are on DnDBeyond so I have everyone's characters (Total of 6). So that takes up all my character slots. If we could save them off, make other characters and be able to change them out as needed would be a plus. Thank you!

I finally bought a subscription to the Hero Tier for this reason. I was finding the six character limit too restricting.
As a DM, I often need to assist new players with Character creation to save time etc.
It would be great to be able to create characters in a campaign, then assign that to a player so they can start working on them on their own and for future games.
Totally agree... having the ability to create characters in advance so players can join with a ready-made character that works within my setting would great allow new players to get up to speed quickly and they can then take the character after and it becomes there own.

It's possible now. There's an errant "not" in Tophloh's above. I believe they meant to say you can creat a character in a campaign, I assign it, and let the player claim it.
But what if I (as DM) created a character under "my characters" and now want to move that character to a campaign I have created and let somebody claim it? I have several characters that I have been working up through the levels for my newbie players, and they are ready to take the reins. If I have to recreate them all and type in (again) all their backstory, allies, etc...that's too much work, and I'm likely to just ditch DnD Beyond for characters management, print what I have now, and let the players move forward on paper. I have way too limited time as a DM to spend it recreating characters I've made just because the tools don't support what I consider to be obvious and basic functionality.
Sorry if I sound bitter, but I have been trying hard to use and encourage my players to use this application and keep finding ways it wants to frustrate me over simple operations.
you can totally do that - the steps are pretty much as you described.
Make sure you have a campaign set-up.
Use the campaign join link yourself, to join with the character - this adds it to the campaign.
Unassign the character.
Another player in the campaign can claim the character as their own by using the join url.
AHA! Thanks so much. I am glad to know I was simply a doofus, and this is not a dndbeyond.com oversight! This solves my biggest issue!
I'm not sure if this is documented well somewhere...if not, I'd say it's not very intuitive to figure out. Is there a list of "common tasks" like this that are spelled out somewhere, other than reading the forums? It would be nice to have a "help" pulldown from the main screen to make these kinds or procedures a bit easier to find and figure out.
I'm doing the exact same thing. They created their characters but I did their character sheets for them on my account. Now I think that, after all that, I may have to open accounts for each of them and remake the characters 😣. Being able to transfer them would be awesome!

This is an old thread and this is something you can already do currently.
Even though this is an old thread, it seems like the right place for my question. I am currently running a campaign with 5 players. One of the players had to temporarily drop out, but has given permission for someone to use her character. I am trying to figure out a way to add her character to one of the other players so they can edit it. It will be easier if they can edit it as opposed to them telling me what changes they want made every time something gets added, or spells change. If I deactivate the one character, it goes to the unassigned character section. Can the other player go in and "activate" that character and it appear as his character along with his other character?

MDB
No - you can't transfer characters from one account to the other.
I think it's unlikely we'll see this functionality added either, but you never know!

Absolutely, sorry - didn't mean to be so negative! :)
A major purpose of this beta phase is to see what really cool ideas that you guys are coming up with!

Thanks Stormknight add this to the list.😉 Some kind of an export/import function would do the trick.

Since this thread was originally posted, the site has progressed, as have ideas on functionality.
The ability to be able to give characters to another player is something that is planned for the future, to better enable campaigns. :)

And import / export for the same obvious reasons.

You can not create a character in a campaign, un-assign it, and then the player can claim the character to play with.
