Depends on what you’re looking for. If you want character sheet functionality on DDB, there’s no alternative. But you can totally create a whole new class with nothing but Google Docs or Microsoft Word if that’s what you’re looking for!
oh ok, i'll probably just figure out the mechanics myself and make a dnd-beyond -esque google sheets to handle stuff automatically. i'm doing a fairly simple thing in terms of stats given it's my first time properly dming, but i've had a really cool and big story planned for a while, it's mainly just balancing & getting it all organized. thanks!

Cool. I only recommend those two sites because they have easy-to-use tables you could use for classes. It’s awesome that you’re DMing for the first time, let us know if you need any help :)
alright thanks! it's going well so far, i'm getting my ideas for one of the galaxies on paper and it feels great knowing that it'll actually be playable soon.
my campaign is essentially set in a universe where there's only 5 galaxies, with special beings (basically gods) residing over them. there's a new magic system based off of glyphs derived from those galaxies. the objective is up to the players, but knowing my party they'll probably try to kill them. to give an example, i'll start with Ω (Manus, latin for power). they have to go around to various planets to create a spaceship strong enough to survive the accretion disk surrounding the central black hole, and go into it. won't say more in case they see this thread.
do you think it's a decent idea for a campaign? if you have any suggestions feel free to share :D
The game mechanics for homebrew classes wouldn't really work, and it would be too hard to create something that allows us to make homebrew classes. And it would be very difficult to create everything in a homebrew class unless your really creative. And making all the subclasses would be really hard.
Got What We Need
While Blood Hunter is great, there just isn't much else to add that fits well with normal dnd. We've got what we need right now, and really, with the difficulty to add this feature, there isn't any point.
Difficulty to Add
Doing big updates on a site is a lot harder than it sounds. It would take forever to make, and there are other priorities for what to add to the site. There is no way to add this feature at the moment.
No Support
There isn't any current support for homebrew classes in DnD, since this is unusual and complicates the rules to much. Blood Hunter was an accepting, and likely involved discussion with dnd/wotc
yeah this makes a lot of sense what KingOrc said. I have heard from some people that Pathfinder lets you customize your character way more than DnD, and has some nice things about it that are better than DnD, but they also said that Pathfinder has more complicated rules so it might be better for DnD veterans instead of beginners.

I heard life is what passes when you're too busy living.
I am currently making a class with some friends and it would be amazing if I could upload it to DND Beyond and be able to make characters on DND Beyond with that class.
This website has a full list of community made classes, there is about 2000 currently on there, some of them are bad or unbalanced but a lot of them have been playtested and work really well

nice! what type of class is it? and that is a good point but idt that dnd beyond wants to have a bunch of classes because it would just kinda go crazy. they need a foundation of classes and extending that would become chaotic

I'm making a summoner class because currently there are only a few summon spells and having a whole class for that would be wicked cool, I agree that it would be chaotic but if they had some system that could counteract some of that like you send in your class and people can playtest it or generally just look over it anf if it gets aprooved then those are the ones that gets put on dnd beyond or something like that.

a summoner class would be super cool. and I think dndbeyond could probably do that but idt they would want to take the time and effort to do that.

I feel like it is their job to take time and do it because all of this is for the community to use and share stuff so I feel like if enough people want to have something new added to it it is the responsibility of the people in charge to do it, not saying they have to or that they will but that is just what I think.

Your mistake is thinking that “all of this is for the community to use and share stuff,” it is not. All of this is for WotC to make money. Homebrew is a necessary evil in their eyes. They have to allow homebrew on DDB or nobody would use it outside of AL. Therefore they graciously acquiesced and allow us the privilege of homebrewing here to keep us pumping money into the website. But they don’t make any money off of homebrew directly, so they’re simply not going to prioritize it.

Not if you're building a whole new world that isn't tied to the standard way all other DND worlds are setup. Like my world, at least as it stands has no magic.

Considering that most classes, or their subclasses, have magic tied into them maybe D&D isn’t the right game for you. Low and no magic D&D games take more work and DDB’s homebrew tool will have problems fulfilling your needs.

That puts your world in the minority. DDB is a business, and their resources are finite. As ThriKreen said, this game is generally geared towards high-magic settings and finding a toolset that ticks all those boxes will likely be difficult.
to be honest the only difference from classes to subclasses that is already homebrew-able is that classes is a subclass that can have subclasses. you still build the exact same features as you would subclasses
Heyyy! I got a "What's been goin on with dndbeyond" e-mail that brought me to this topic. Funny enough, one of my players stopped using dndbeyond specifically because he got permanently mutated in my campaign. That mutation came with a fancy custom class, and there's no way to create a custom class.
Hear that, WotC? You're losing players from this particular lack of customization. Which in turn, could turn into a hit to your profits. Wouldn't that just be a shame.
Ah well. Even in an era of online dnd, I still prefer pencil and paper at a table of good mates. So much easier to customize if needed.

It would be a nice thing to have.
I understand its hard, if they want this place to be the one stop shop for all things D&D though, then its the sort of hard work they need to do.
