Hello all! I just read the new UA and liked it! I read the Dhampir and it made me think, which one is better? This or the Ixalan Vampire? I'm pretty sure Dhampir is more powerful (and more anime), due to the Spider climb ability.
Yet, I find Dhampir thematically less cool, since the bite attack isn't nearly as good. The Healing bite attack sounds, eh. Ok, so you bite an enemy and you heal 1-4 damage. Then the enemy attacks you with a sword and you die. The under half of your health advantage is nice, but again, if you have to use your bite attack to heal, next turn you probably will be knocked unconscious anyways unless the game is low level. It might be better out of combat. You knock your enemy unconscious, then bite them twice, regaining hitpoints. Which is, okay. The bonus to attacks and ability checks is good. I can see you using that in battle. I can also see a character, Strood the rat catcher, a Dhampir character who raises rats, and whenever he is about to do something important, he bites one of his rats. Also, with Dhampir being a lineage, you can get racial feats which is a bonus.
What do you think? Which do you think is more powerful? Like Strood the rat catcher?
The healing bite isn't as weak as you say- it's not healing 1-4 damage, it's healing equal to the damage dealt- which includes the added Con mod, and thus will heal more than the Ixalan Vampire's Blood Drain. The Dhampir's bite damage can also be increased further- hex and hunter's mark, for instance, will increase the damage and thus potential healing, and there's other options too. Sure, limited uses, and sure, it's not much healing (neither is) but racial traits are not typically going to be massively influential.
Between Spider Climb and a Con mod melee attack option, Dhampir is, to me, a superior option. You have a good reason to prioritize Con over other stats, and still have an effective combatant (maybe not as effective, if you're focusing mainly on the bite, but still effective)- whilst having buckets of hit points and thus being hard to kill.
Way of the Open Fist Mouth monk: all bites all the time!
Keep in mind the healing effect of the bite is only [prof.] times a day. But everyone is going to say it's broken in feedback and it will nerfed to either CON or prof. hp recovered, if not worse. I hope at least they keep it as a CON attack because that's actually a really interesting option to add.

I fully expect the Dhampir to get a downgrade if it gets released officially.
Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
Dhampir Barbarian with increased HP, AC, and lifesteal with Con? Yeah, that'll happen.
I'd argue they're both somewhat OP, but Dhampir is more so, especially if you can get sneak attack or divine smite on your bite attack
