Text reads: No more heavy lifting. D&D Beyond inventory management. Phase 1 available now. The image shows a bag of holding on one side, and a rogue looting treasure with a portable hole on the other.
The first phase of Inventory Management is now available to ALL users! Start organizing your equipment, put things into bags of holding, rename your baskets "Dress with Pockets" and get excited for what's still to come: Because this is just the first step! There's more planned as development continues. Read more in our changelog.
Super excited for this feature! I did a bit of tinkering on a couple characters to put their items into containers, and I discovered one pretty noticeable issue. Custom items can't be put into containers. I track specific spell component items as custom items, so I was hoping to be able to throw them into my component pouch to have them neatly tucked away. This isn't possible yet, so I just wanted to bring that to the devs' attention.
If anyone else reads this and is looking for a workaround, I just added the components as chalk, then edited the name, notes, and cost to indicate what the item actually is. This isn't perfect, but it's a decent workaround for now.
I believe they commented on this in the announcement, but it’s still in the works. It’ll probably be up in a week at most, like when Tasha’s first came out and the customizations weren’t available
great stuff, but whoa, be really careful with this! I was going down the line, clicking Move on stuff to move to my haversack, and I accidentally clicked Remove on something that is now lost forever, and I have no idea what it was. Custom stuff can't be moved, only removed. I think we need an Undo!

Custom items being able to become container-ized is definitely a part of the plan!

Will there be a way to remove the weight of items added to haversacks and bags of holding etc. in bulk?
While I'm not sure of the future scope of this feature, I can suggest a workaround in the interim; you can set the weight of a container to negative which will offset the weight of the items within. So say you have a bag of holding (which always weighs 15lb) and you put in 100lb of stuff. Override the weight to -85lb and presto container, you've got a 'weightless' bag of holding.
Rad, thank you! This is such a great start. Besides the ability to have nested Containers at least one level down (Backpack > Alms Box), it would be nice to be able to rearrange containers without having to rename them according to the alphabetical autosort schema.
While custom names is helpful in this regard, you can't rename "Equipment". Maybe either allowing that to be renamed or stickied at the top or bottom of the inventory element might be an alternative, if custom ranking the container order numerically is not possible. It would also be nice to do this with the Attunement section. I know everyone will have a different preference, but I'd like to see that at the top once I have attuned to at least one item. Custom ranking sections would allow people to do this as they prefer. And, continuing to shoot my shot, having an Abridged View option for the Attunement area with the three circular pictures aligned in a row would be a nice option for those of us who'd like to see them at the top. The Items Requiring Attunement section could be its own little icon with the list appearing in a side overlay on click to keep the information accessible.

Any idea when we'll be able to do this? I'm just asking because there's a lot of characters with custom items in my current campaign.

Containers taking into consideration weight (and certain containers nullifying weight), as well as being able to decide which containers are actually being carried vs. not, are planned as part of future phases!

First of all: FREAKING THANK YOU. I have been dreaming of this for so long, it's really important to the kinds of games my table likes to play. Even just this Phase 1 rollout is absolutely fantastic and super helpful.
Second of all: for people wanting to put stuff in custom containers, note that currently containers don't respect their "stock/"/as-written limitations. You can add, say, four pouches to your sheet, name them Heward's Hireling's Armor Pockets 1, 2, 3, and 4, override the weight to 0, and they'll work as the pouches for your armor. My artificer has a belt with four integrated pouches and some extra junk - I made each of those pouches its own weightless pouch and renamed a fifth pouch "Star's Battle Belt", overrode its weight to 6 to account for the other junk, and put the stuff hanging off said belt in there.
Get your inner Rob Liefeld on and absolutely cover your character in pouches...renamed/customized to be whatever it is you're actually storing things in.
I love this feature! I have a question/request for it: If it doesn't already exist (maybe I missed it somehow?), it would be nice to have a checkbox in the customization section of container items to toggle them as containers. As a primary example, I'd like to be able to make it so that my component pouch appears as a regular item (at least until I have some costly components).
This is awesome! Been wanting this for a long time. Can someone tell me what the "Stow" button does? 'Cause, as far as I can tell, nothing happens when you click it (or the "Use" toggle for that matter). What I expect to happen is if you have "Stow" turned on, the weight of the object (or container) is discounted from your Encumbrance, while maintaining your Inventory properly otherwise. But, again, I can see nothing happening whatsoever when I toggle this button...
I have a Heward's Handy Haversack. Will it account for having the 3 separate areas in a later update?
A general comment on Backpacks and other backpack-like containers: in my own accounting I consider the "outside" of a Backpack to be its own container, since you can explicitly strap bedrolls and rope etc. to the outside, and taking off the backpack removes their weight as well.
Do you plan to have Scroll/Map Cases count as containers?
Edit: Forgot to say, this feature is cool and I'm glad you've started implementing it!

Holy cats! I just found out about this. I was making a new character and noticed the new drop-downs. It's fantastic, thanks very much.

So I made this item for a player in my campaign a while back:

It doesn't seem that items can be moved into it yet. But it's tagged as a container. Will that come soon?

Great suggestion, passing it on!
We don't offer ETAs, but it's definitely 'up there' on the list. I'm super excited for that functionality, too!
Being able to create your own custom containers is planned for the future, but not available at this time!
Heward’s Hireling Armor does not show up as a container, despite being a pseudo bag of holding.

Pretty sure it just unequips the item and makes them unattuned
