I was answering a question posed by another user, and not engaging with you personally, and this is fact the first time I spoken to you. Love that you cherry picked the one line from my response to get huffy about while ignoring the rest of it. If others taking your posts in bad faith frustrates you could just not engage with those conversations.
I am at liberty to address people who are speaking about me while I am 'in the room'. I am using the term 'you' in the generic or impersonal form, which should be clear contextually, if you have never spoken to me in this thread.
It is not cherry picking when I am focusing on the post that has to do with me specifically. I could choose not to engage those people, but I also can choose to engage people who engage in bad faith. Thank you for checking my extended signature though.
Quit calling it an upgrade. It's not objectively an upgrade because quality is subjective. It's a change, that's all that can accurately be attributed to it in that sense.
And for anyone wanting to keep the 2014 rules in the toolkit (like they paid for), it's a downgrade for those individuals. That can be officially stated because it's based on what they want out of the tools.
I am not calling it an upgrade in any objective sense. I am calling it an upgrade in the official sense.
This doesn't make the changes any better. It's still making it nigh impossible to use the app to play using the 5E.14 ruleset. Why would I use the app if I have to reference the compendium? The entire USP of the app is that the spells are accessible in one place, now it's actually worse than just using a book or searching the spell on google.
Getting updated spells and magic items for free, without giving them a dime for it, does make the changes better. A lot better. Before, it seemed as though you were just up the creek without a paddle and had to homebrew to even make your character sheet functional. Now, it will just be replaced with the most up to date versions. Very different and much better.
Nope.
Not different. Not better.
I bought the 2014 rules to use the 2014 rules, not to look at them on a compendium that has no functionality on the platform. The new DnDbeyond system will remove my ability to use those books and enforce the use of the new rules; rules i did not ask for or want to use.
If i cannot use the book, i have effectively lost the book because i cannot recreate the old system those books presented using the compendium.
I refuse to eat around the d*** in the salad this time.
I didn't think that they had actually given a definite answer on whether you would be able to add 2014 content to character sheets, just that all character sheets will default to the new 2024 content. They were being vague and skirting around the issue with the new clarification (backtrack) announcement by saying 2014 content will still be available but not mentioning at all if you can add it to character sheets. Maybe I missed something but that's what I had read.
I also think that it is crazy that in the character creation home page it will not be possible to toggle OFF the new 2024 rules. What if we want to play completely without them? We just aren't allowed to do that anymore?
This is just another OGL fiasco all over again where they make these terrible changes to things that the community absolutely despises and makes no sense to do in the first place and then they go into damage control mode and start rolling stuff back.
Let's hope they roll it back enough because I've already told the players in my games to make backups of their DnDbeyond character sheets on other platforms or at least take screenshots so they can be remade somewhere else, and I have probably at least 30 I have to backup myself because I use character sheets for a lot of NPCs in my homebrew world, and also have a handful of PCs on here as well.
You will 100% be able to make and play characters using the 2014 rules. The issue people are concerned about is that certain parts of the system are being updated to the new rules in such a way that it will affect those characters in the toolset, spells and equipment being the main issues, presumably because they're not segmented in the system the same way as other things that have been marked "Legacy" in the past (but that last bit is my educated guess).
So even though you have a 2014 character, the links in the tools will point to the current 2024 version of spells and equipment and the 2014 versions will only be accessible via the compendium content. That's the problem.
No, you can make a character with *some* 2014 rules. Other rules you will be forced to use 2024 rules. Existing character sheets will have some features forcibly changed to 2024 rules. There will be no way to build a 100% 2014 cjaracter on here adter the switchover.
This is all quite clear in the changelog. They have listed a homebrew workaround for spells, however experimentation on the forums has shown that this won't work in many cases.
Access through the compendium is irrelevant to the character builder features being removed.
Verbiage on the sheet will match 2024 rules. The character will still be 100 percent a 2014 character if you build it with a 2014 class and species (race). "This change impacts the information you’ll find on your character sheet, in tooltips, and that is linked in the compendium" is what the changelog says (emphasis mine). It's not going to force your class features to behave like the 2024 update, for instance.
We all know that's not optimal but it's also not "there will be no way to build a 100% 2014 cjaracter on here adter the switchover."

So I can keep the 2014 spells on my character then? And if I have a rogue it will list the 2014 hide rules?

I have amended my statement to make room for people who would rather WotC take it all away and make them pay for new ones. If that is you, you will have company it seems.

You have 2014 spells on your sheet assuming the name of the spell didn't change. You just don't have the 2014 spell description linked to it.
As far as the rogue hide goes, I believe its description would fall under the information noted in the changelog as being changed. However, that doesn't mean you have to play it that way.

Which isn't from the 2014 rules. The toolset lets us auto-roll through our sheets and the rolls show up in the campaign log. The rolls will be wrong if we try to click on it from the sheet now. Because the old versions are being stolen from us.

Maybe you will get what you want. I remember a long time ago, long before WotC owned the site, where there was some content that was pulled. I think Fandom or the first owner, Curse, lost a contract. This was a long time ago, so my memory is very hazy, but there was forum outcry. A lot of it, and the owners responded by issuing refunds.
So yes, do continue to voice your opinions. It can elicit change if the anger is pointed in the right direction.
The options are not "WotC takes everything away" and "WotC takes old thing away and gives you new thing out of the kindness of their hearts".

The subject of WotC's generosity has never been part of my argument?
We don't know the details on why the Legacy option was utilized for everything else, but not the spells and magic items. There very well could be a valid reason for them not using it. The content you purchased is not inaccessible. It is available in the compendium in its original form and available in its new form in the 2024 rules toolset.
Whether WotC are heroes is also not material to any topic I have discussed. Not even as an implied statement. Are you sure you mean to respond to me?
You have 2014 spells on your sheet assuming the name of the spell didn't change. You just don't have the 2014 spell description linked to it.
As far as the rogue hide goes, I believe its description would fall under the information noted in the changelog as being changed. However, that doesn't mean you have to play it that way.
So you are conceding that you can't have a 100% 2014 character, you will have to at least have the 2024 spell descriptions and 2024 hide rules (there are more obviously, but we don't need to go through one by one).
I want a 2014 character sheet using official 5e rules. Taking away the 2014 rules leaves me without a 2014 character sheet. Taking away the 2014 rules and giving me 2024 rules leaves me without a 2014 character sheet. Neither situation is better for me.
We all understand and agree that for those that want to switch this is a good deal. For those of us that don't however both options are equally bad.
DnDbeyond already has a system to allow for old content and new content to exist. The legacy system. They chose not to use this. They chose to make content we purchased for inaccessible in the purpose it was purchased for. This is <their> choice, and i will not have bad faith actors like you try to make a case for them being the good guys in this situation.
I did not buy a live service update game. I bought the digital copy of a book that is <only> usable on this site, and they are removing the functionality of said purchase.
I refuse to give this company a single red cent at this point; but enjoy your salad.
Your "Valid Reason" is pretty much coperate greed.
There is no database design ever that would warrant replacement on a technical site at all.
In fact replacing entries balantly is something you have to go out of your way for.
I purchased content for the character builder. That will no longer be accessable. Do not try and claim that compendium content is an acceptable substitute.

Sure, if that misinterpretation makes you feel better, but those things are not your character, though. They're links off your character sheet in a tool. It doesn't make it more optimal, but those are the facts.

Most of us paid more to specifically have the content for the character builder, if it’s not available in the character builder it absolutely is inaccessible for the purpose in which it was purchased.

I am not calling it an upgrade in any objective sense. I am calling it an upgrade in the official sense.

Spells being changed automatically makes your statement a lie. The 2014 spells are part of building a 2014 character.

It is better than getting nothing for those who would prefer to have the spells and magic items represented in the toolset in some form. I have amended my statement to make room for people who would rather WotC take it all away and make them pay for new ones. If that is you, you will have company it seems.

Not true, you'll still be able to pick from the same spell lists you always have. They'll just have the 2024 descriptions attached to them as per the changelog.

so if it has 2024 spells how is it going to be a 100% 2014 character? simple answer is it wont be, it will be a 2014 character with 2024 spells. im not sure what the math is but i know enough to know thats not 100%
Which isn't from the 2014 rules. The toolset lets us auto-roll through our sheets and the rolls show up in the campaign log. The rolls will be wrong if we try to click on it from the sheet now. Because the old versions are being stolen from us.
