This doesn't make the changes any better. It's still making it nigh impossible to use the app to play using the 5E.14 ruleset. Why would I use the app if I have to reference the compendium? The entire USP of the app is that the spells are accessible in one place, now it's actually worse than just using a book or searching the spell on google.
Getting updated spells and magic items for free, without giving them a dime for it, does make the changes better. A lot better. Before, it seemed as though you were just up the creek without a paddle and had to homebrew to even make your character sheet functional. Now, it will just be replaced with the most up to date versions. Very different and much better.
No it absolutely does not. "updated" spells and magic items are a net NEGATIVE for me, free or not. I would rather get NOTHING then the 2024 versions.
Also its insane to release all the books months apart. So many rule changes and the balance of combat thrown to the wayside as we wait for new monsters to match.
Not really. For one, 5e was already like that, and while "It was like that before so it has to be like that now" is a weak argument, it does set precedence.
Regardless, the print can't keep up with demand. Period. So either:
Print millions of books and store them for more than a year while you wait to print the rest of the set.
Release all books digitally at once, but only slowly release physical.
Hire more print capacity from 3rd party.
Focus on one book at a time, releasing both digital and physical at the same time.
1 is a logistical and financial nightmare, so that's out. 2 would piss of a ton of people and cannibalize physical sales for the future, so that's out too. 3 sounds reasonable, but comes with QA issues along with reduced product margins, increased leak chance and reduced time to work on the product, so that's out too.
Which leaves us with option 4. I'm sure it's going to annoy some people, but not as many, and that's really about it.
I have to agree about the practicality of staggered books releases. I can only hope that Wizards at least offers some sort of intermediate conversion suggestions on how to re-scale monsters to fit with the changes. The example the used for the dire wolf in the change log had a huge HP reduction, loss of it keen senses and changed the prone effect from a STR save to a guaranteed prone enemy.
It seems to be my impression that characters are generally getting more powerful through better healing, most spells dealing slight more damage, and an improved bonus action selection. Granted I haven't read all the new materials so I don't know how many things I perceive as boons also come with some minor nerfs.
It will be nice when the dust settles and all the material is out.
I changed my mind; I'm never coming back. Nothing you do can fix this because it is clear you will keep trying to screw your customers over. Nice "clarification".

Agreed. The clarification is worse then the original problem.
Pulling this from elsewhere, but can anyone confirm if this is this the full list of spells that are being changed (and will need to be homebrewed before the update for the least amount of manual labor)?
Acid Splash. Alter Self. Animal Messenger. Animal Shapes. Animate Objects. Antilife Shell. Arcane Lock. Armor of Agathys. Aura of Purity. Aura of Vitality.
Magic Jar. Magic Missile. Magic Weapon. Major Image. Mass Cure Wounds. Mass Healing Word.Mass Suggestion. Maze. Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound.
Nystul’s Magic Aura
Polymorph. Produce Flame.
Ray of Enfeeblement Ray of Sickness. Resistance.
Simulacrum. Sleep. See Invisibility. Spiritual Weapon. Swift Quiver. Spirit Guardians.
True Polymorph. True Strike.
Vicious Mockery.
Wish. Witch Bolt.
You'll also need to homebrew everything that comes with a spell (legacy subclasses & expanded spell lists, legacy items, etc). And there are still things that you can't homebrew that come with spells (like warlock invocations).
This list is actually missing a ton of spells, unfortunately (I tried to use the same one from Reddit/Tabletop Builds).
Hero's Feast, every Smite spell, Mirror Image, Sleet Storm, Otto's Irresistible Dance, all the Power Word spells, and quite a few others were also changed in significant ways. I linked a two-part Youtube series above that has every spell.
So you are adding nothing and should just stop commenting because you are actively adding nothing
My comments have added to this conversation in that I have reiterated a frequently misunderstood point, which is that I have only stated that no one is losing content, it is being updated to the current rules and this is better than simply losing the content entirely. Some people do not like that and they are free to express that dislike. But to say that it is the same as getting nothing is not correct. The change log is addressing a major issue for many people. There are hundreds of people in the previous thread that came away with a very different understanding which had caused them a lot of pain, who would now be less so or even not angry at all. In fact, there are several posts in this thread of users expressing relief, even if they are small in number compared to those who are still unhappy. Those people have feelings that are just as valid as those who are still angry.
You are not the arbiter of what I can post. If I am off topic, you should flag me.
Please please please clarify about how this will affect character sheets. It would be so easy to solve with a toggle option but that makes too much sense.
If you keep replying to people asserting that your opinion is objective and insisting that you're right and everyone else is wrong, don't be surprised when people tend to react to it. Maybe try to understand/accept that what is 'objectively better' for you isn't the same for everyone? It's like someone telling you they're lactose intolerant and prefer non-dairy milk, and you respond by saying that milk products are objectively better- not what they need, and definitely not the opinion they need either.
Either way I'm gonna bonus action disengage, cheers.
I am not surprised by the blowback. I responded to someone else who stated something similar. The response is entirely understandable and I have no intention of trying to argue that people should like the changes. What remains true is that people are getting new content, which is better than when they thought they were getting no content. How much better is a personal opinion, which everyone is entitled to.
Using your analogy, it would be like me saying that milk products are able to provide calcium and vitamin d rather than having neither non-dairy milk, milk products, or any calcium or vitamin d fortified products at all. I am not saying it is the what should be preferred, nor am I saying that dairy milk is better than non-dairy, it simply is, with no judgement assigned to the factual statement.
You literally started these arguments by asserting that it was "objectively better" and that your argument was unassailable, my dude.

Okay. Then I will amend my initial statement to say that it is better for anyone who would rather have something than nothing at all and that there are some who would rather they get nothing. That is a surprise for me.

No. The "2024 Free Rules" are just there to force people to adapt to the 2024 Books. Otherwise, people simply wouldn't buy the 2024 books digitally, and keep all of their access to 2014 Spells and Magic Items working normally, or at least as they do now.
Here's the thing. They could've given the SRD for free, just like they did with the current rules, and I doubt anyone would be angry. In fact by having those 5.5 spells I'm sure there would be some people that would dip their toes with the free stuff and then think, "Hey, I like this. I'll buy the new books too." It would've been the same strategy they have now where people can get used to the site and then purchase later on.
Instead they had to ruin that, a positive bonus to get the SRD implemented for free (even if you didn't use it, could just ignore it) and mix in a controversy by saying, "Oh by the way we're taking away your current stuff in the character builder whether you like it or not."
All users, regardless of whether they have purchased the 2024 Player’s Handbook, will be able to access these updated Spells for free if they previously purchased the 2014 Player’s Handbook.
Who cares? We don't want to updated spells we want the 2014 spells.
All users, regardless of whether they have purchased the 2024 rulebooks, will be able to access updated magic items for free if they have previously purchased the 2014 Player’s Handbook.
Again, no one cares. We don't want the content free or not. In fact at this point I no longer even want to SEE a 2024 spell even if you PAY me to use it.
The 2014 versions of these items will still be accessible in the D&D Beyond Compendium.
Access to these items (this also applies to the spells) in the compendium is WORTHLESS. We pay for the tools and the integrations, not an archive.
These attempts to placate the community are ringing hollow because your leadership fundamentally doesn't understand what your product is and why we bought it and because of that this clarification makes things worse.
Players will not lose access to their 2014 content in the Compendium. 2014 content will continue to be accessible on the D&D Beyond site and available for purchase after the release of the 2024 Core Rulebook. The information in them will remain unchanged, and players will not lose access to any of their 2014 content.
Spells
When updated, Spell descriptions on character sheets will default to 2024 Core Rulebook descriptions. All users, regardless of whether they have purchased the 2024 Player’s Handbook, will be able to access these updated Spells for free if they previously purchased the 2014 Player’s Handbook. All 2014 versions of Spells will still be accessible in the D&D Beyond Compendium and available for players to access.
Your statement indicates that the 2014 Core rulebook spells will ONLY be accessible through the Compendium and will be "locked" or inaccessible through the D&D beyond toolset.
The problem is your currently selling the Core 2014 rules with this statement in its advertising.
"Purchasing a digital copy of this book unlocks it for use in the D&D BEYOND compendium and toolset. D&D BEYOND is the official digital toolset for DUNGEONS & DRAGONS."
I have screen shots for proof. Thousands of people will have bought it with this advertising in place which makes it clear that we can use it with the toolset. Locking us out one of the key features of the product we bought is extremely problematic as this could break laws in various countries.
this is my general stance, if the spells and items aren't accessible by default on the character sheet and the only way for me to add them back is to "homebrew" them back in, then I'm just gonna "homebrew" them on a different site, as many others have said we pay for the convenience and by making this change it is a straight up inconvenience.
when making a character we already have the options of standard, premade, quick build, random, just change standard to 5.5 and another tab for 5e. or mark them as legacy spells, if things like magic missiles and jims magic missiles can co-exist then 2014 and 2024 spells can too, them not just making a separate version for 5.5 is purely laziness and if they expect people to continue using this site they need to stop the change before it begins.
@carnelianhearts: Thanks for linking the YouTube videos! I was trying to avoid videos because it takes way more time than just a written list but I guess I can make that a weekend project. While the two games I'm a player in use Roll20 as a VTT, both currently use D&D Beyond campaign content sharing; about half of us use D&D Beyond character sheets with the browser widget to roll on Roll20. It might be simpler to pay or deal with Roll20's manual input since both of those games already use Roll20. The main books I own on D&D Beyond were gifts and while paying ~$75 for the Roll20 Player Bundle is annoying, purchasing the content again might be less annoying than dealing with all the D&D Beyond homebrew shenanigans and the forced update to the 2024 character sheet. I'm not in too deep in the D&D Beyond walled garden that a sunk cost can keep me here if other platforms have better functionality.

Very very respectfully: This entire changelog and "News" and "Clarification" is so much bullshit that it borders on harasment to begin with.
Once this goes into place I will be ending my subscription and moving to another system. This is the final straw and this company has shown it values profits and speedy, haphazard production over retaining players. Your company is turning a TTRPG into a micro transactional nightmare similar to Fortnite and you called the Pinkertons to harass someone.
Worse, not a single response regarding the elephant in the room for character sheets. Your company are full of cowards, fools, and sycophants in service to aberrations who value gold more than dragons.

Just unsubscribe right now. Best case scenario: they get the message and do a 180 Worst case scenarrio: you don't need to pay them sempter fees.
Hopefully the response already here has made you realize this is not an acceptable plan, and you'll reconsider. Just adding my voice to the chorus that I'm not ok with this, and I expect you to find a way to implement this without taking away content I paid for. If you can not, I expect to be refunded.
