Here are defined the moderation practices, rules, guidelines, and infraction systems that are practiced throughout the comment and posting systems on D&D Beyond. These rules are globally applied to the D&D Beyond website, in addition to any forum-specific rules pinned that some boards may contain. As operated by Wizards of the Coast, the Wizards General Terms will also apply.
Last Updated: May 2025 (See edit notes at the bottom)
The goal of moderation upon D&D Beyond is to promote and maintain a respectful, welcoming, and inclusive community for all users. This goal will be the guiding principle for all moderation efforts. If there is ever a conflict between the rule as written and this guiding principle, the principle will hold priority. Moderation across D&D Beyond will always reflect on and consider the above goal, applying to contextual instances where written rules might not be defined. The lack of rule definition or inclusion is not an acceptable excuse for circumventing the above goal, as moderation will not be limited by the bounds of these written rules.
Introduction to the Moderation Team
All D&D Beyond Staffmembers will be listed in red. All D&D Beyond Moderationmembers will be listed in orange.
The Moderation Team is always happy to help you on these forums. If you encounter a question, need assistance, or want to address a topic you wish not to discuss in public, the Moderators are always welcoming of Private Messages.
These moderators are a group of volunteers who have been entrusted to guide, oversee, and curate community contributions. They will use their best judgment to interpret context and intent when evaluating community interactions.
The rules apply to the entire website including, but not limited to: all forums, comments, homebrew, usernames, signatures, articles, videos, private messages, reports, and appeals.
Post thoughtfully. If there is doubt of whether a contribution is acceptable or not, especially during the heat of debate, err on the side of caution. Moderators are always available to assist with questions or advise on rules alignment before a post is made.
Context, attitude, and tone will be interpreted by moderation and measured against the goal(the top of the page) for providing a respectful, welcoming, and safe environment.
We are each responsible for our own posts. Be wary of how your post may read to others, as moderation will be performed against the impact it has. Not only is what you say important but also how you say it.
Differences are welcome on D&D Beyond. Users will have varying opinions, points of view, experiences, and values. While we may not always agree, these differences are what contribute to making the community great. It is important to remain mindful of others and respect contrasting commentary, up to and including the conclusion of discussions before they escalate to rule violations.
1 • Treat everyone with courtesy and respect.
Why? We want all fans of D&D to feel welcome here, even and especially when there’s a difference of opinions.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
The following subjects, described in detail below:
Hate Speech (which could result in an immediate ban)
Harassment
Trolling
Rudeness, name-calling, or other insults.
Making public accusations about another user or attempting to name and shame someone.
Posting accusations of others’ behavior, calling out users, their logic, or labeling them with such.
Treating someone with disrespect even if they’re being disrespectful.
Engaging in bad faith argument.
Denouncing or attempting to limit the methods, flavors, or fun in which others experience D&D.
1.1 • Hate Speech
Hate Speech includes any discrimination or derogatory comments against a protected category. These categories include race, skin color, gender, sexuality, disability, genetics, country or national origin, and political or religious beliefs.
Violations of this rule are strictly prohibited and may result in an immediate ban.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
Racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or ableist content.
Casual racism or slurs.
Requesting or providing slurs for fantasy races.
Sweeping generalizations about any protected category.
Denial of problematic subtext in depictions of fantasy cultures.
Diminishing or dismissing these issues, or how others may experience or relate to them.
Statements meant to disregard or undermine these issues, including statements, content, or links associated with hate groups.
Endorsing or promoting any hate group.
1.2 • Harassment
Harassment includes any user-targeted disturbance, pattern of disrespect, unwanted communications, alienation, unwelcome advances, aggression, intimidation, or report retaliation. All behaviors that can be described as a personal or group attack, labeling, or insult are prohibited. This includes (but is not limited to):
Attacking people or groups you disagree with instead of challenging and debating their views. (or in cases of the views being actively harmful, continuing to engage instead of reporting it to a moderator)
Attempting to publicly accuse, call out, or "name and shame" another user, even when well-intentioned.
Attempting to publicly contact a user who you are otherwise unable to contact. (This will be taken as a sign that user does not wish to be contacted.)
Starting a public argument with another user over events that occurred while not on D&D Beyond.
Mocking the use of pronouns or deliberately disrespecting someone’s pronoun choice.
“Grouping up” or garnering others against an individual.
While challenging ideas or debating thoughts is acceptable, attacking the people or groups holding them is not. Please review the following examples:
Attacking the idea/thought/statement
“The argument of [statement] is [wrong/bad] because of [reason].”
“Your reasoning for liking [thing] is [inaccurate/bad] because of [reason].”
Attacking the person/group
“You are [wrong/awful] because of [reason].”
“Your logic is trash.”
“[These types of people] are notoriously bad or worthless.”
“People holding [person’s viewpoint] are stupid.”
1.3 • Trolling
Trolling includes any messages deemed to be inflammatory, insincere, digressive, extraneous, or off-topic with the intent of provoking users into displaying emotional responses or manipulating others’ perceptions. Purposeful disruption or destructive communication will be considered a violation. Replying to another user solely to call them a troll (or otherwise antagonizing them) will also be considered trolling.
2 • Keep things appropriate for an all-ages audience.
Why? Users can be as young as 13, so we need everything to stay family-friendly.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
Attempting to bypass the language filters we have in place or to test their limits.
Sexual content or innuendo, or depictions of nudity.
Swearing or other foul language.
Discussing drugs or drug use.
Excessive descriptions of violence or toilet humor.
Inappropriate usernames or avatars.
Requesting personal information from another user, such as their age or location.
3 • Follow these guidelines for specific topics and content.
3.1 • User Safety
Why? This limits content that can compromise someone’s safety online or in real life.
3.1.1 • Do not share or request any information that could identify a user in real life. Why? While this rule is primarily intended to safeguard minors here on D&D Beyond, it applies to all users equally. We do not want to foster an environment in which sharing personally identifiable information (PII) is normalized and thereby encourage minors to share.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
Sharing your PII, including(but not limited to):
Exact age (an age range is fine, such as "I'm over 18").
Exact location (an approximate location like country, continent, or time zone is fine).
Any information that could compromise your physical safety, like your full name or phone number.
Any information that could compromise your digital safety, like your password.
Requesting PII from another user.
Sharing the PII of another user.
Posting surveys that collect PII.
Attempts at social engineering.
3.1.2 • Do not request or share medical, legal, or other professional advice. Why? Giving or soliciting professional advice from random people on the internet can put people at risk, be it physically, psychologically, legally, financially, or in many other ways. If you need professional advice, consult a professional.
3.2 • Politics and Religion
Why? Discussion of real-world politics and religion is often divisive and can more easily lead to uncivil disagreement.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
Discussing your political affiliation.
Sharing opinions on current or proposed laws.
Encouraging others to take action for or against a particular law.
Sharing opinions regarding a person or group with real-world political or religious affiliations.
Discussing D&D characters based on real-world political or religious figures.
Discussing the ideologies of a real-world political or religious organization.
Condemning others based on your personal political or religious views.
Politicizing a non-political topic.
Avatars (AKA profile pictures) with real-world political or religious themes.
3.2.1 • Personal Identities For the purposes of these rules, there is a clear distinction between political (legal events, actions, figures, and groups) and politicized (the act of turning a non-political issue into a political topic). Many marginalized people have had their identities politicized, but that does not mean in any uncertain terms that a person's racial or gender identity falls under the rules regarding political discussion. Any attempt to claim otherwise will be considered a violation of this policy.
3.3 • Copyrighted Material
Why? There are legal limits to how copyrighted content, including D&D content from Wizards of the Coast and third-party publishers, can be shared.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
Linking to websites that host pirated content, even if the content you're linking to is not pirated.
Instructing another user on where to find pirated content.
Making public requests for paid game content to be shared with you, including by joining a campaign on D&D Beyond. (This is considered soliciting, which is against the Terms of Service.)
Sharing paid game content (such as a spell) in its entirety, especially when only a small portion is necessary for the current discussion.
3.3.1 • D&D Game Content This policy applies to game content from Wizards of the Coast and third-party publishers.
Referral links and affiliate links are not permitted.
3.4.2 • Link Etiquette Users are expected to provide context for any link shared. In other words, you should give fellow users a clear understanding of what the link contains without requiring them to click it first.
Links without proper context will be removed. Misrepresenting the contents of a link is strictly prohibited.
3.5 • Images
Why? This protects users against spam and inappropriate imagery.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
Images that violate another forum rule, such as:
Images that aren't appropriate for an all-ages audience.
Images that are off-topic for the current forum
GIF and meme responses
AI-generated images
Sharing non-D&D artwork in our art forums.
Failure to credit the original artist or plagiarizing another artist's work.
3.5.1 • Art Guidelines All art in the art forum must be clearly related to D&D.
If your image is not clearly related to D&D on its own but represents something used in your D&D game, please provide additional context in the accompanying message to make it clear.
If you have not used it in-game, please respect that others are here to see D&D content, and find a more appropriate venue to share your image.
If you are not the original artist or if your creation would not be possible without another artist’s work, a link to their website or social media account is required.
3.5.2 • Oversized Images Images are to be kept to external links or within the borders of the forum formatting. Any images that break the readability of a thread will be removed without notice.
Signature images are to be limited to 500px by 100px in dimension combined.
3.6 • User Profiles
Why? Because this information is publicly visible, it must follow the forum rules.
3.6.1 • Usernames and Nicknames Names are expected to follow all other forum rules. Some common violations include:
Using language that is not suitable for an all-ages audience.
Using real-world political or religious references.
Any name that includes hate speech or promotes a hate group will result in an immediate ban.
A moderator may add or change your forum username. If this occurs, you will be notified, and you are free to change it again to any other name permissible under the rules.
3.6.2 • Avatars Avatars (AKA profile pictures) are expected to follow all other forum rules. Some common violations include:
Using an image that is not suitable for an all-ages audience.
Using real-world political or religious references.
If an avatar violates this policy:
Any avatar that includes hate speech, promotes a hate group, or includes pornography will result in an immediate ban.
Your account may be subject to a manual quarantine. You will be unable to participate on this forums until your avatar is changed.
3.6.3 • Other Profile Fields Other profile fields that are not visible are not generally subject to these rules. However, any profile featuring hate speech or promoting hate groups will result in an immediate ban.
3.6.4 • Impersonation Using a profile to impersonate a moderator or a Wizards of the Coast employee is strictly prohibited and could result in an immediate ban.
3.7 • AI Content
Why? There are ongoing discussions over the ethics of how AI is trained and how the materials used in that training are sourced.
Any content created, in whole or in part, through the use of artificial intelligence is not permitted. This primarily includes text, images, and/or audio produced or edited by AI, and it applies whether the AI was prompted by human input or not. Advertisements related to these programs or their creations is also prohibited.
This policy does not apply to human discussions about AI itself or specific AI programs, or to human-written prompts for such programs.
3.8 • Advertising
D&D Beyond only allows advertisements that are related to the Dungeons & Dragons product or hobby. Such items include paid products, services, and donations such as: Patreon, Kickstarter, art commissions, maps, Etsy store products, contests, surveys, miniatures, adventures, homebrew, apparel, and dice.
All advertisements need to be contained to a single thread on the Advertisements board and are subject to moderator approval/discretion.
Posting or commenting with meme or ‘troll’ text, images, or videos such as: “first”, “u mad”, “cool story bro”, “10/10”, or captioned meme images.
Posting gibberish.
Quoting posts without content/text of one’s own.
3.9.1 • Excessive Threads Threads on a topic are to be limited to a single instance and not cross-posted to multiple boards. Threads are to contain substantial content and are not created “for the sake thereof”. Threads are not to be deleted and reposted to circumvent “bumping”. Regarding Looking for Players & Groups, the board-specific rules for multiple games are also in effect.
3.9.2 • Bumping Threads It is not permitted to “bump” threads for the sake of increasing post visibility, raising thread priority, or alerting subscribed members of a thread. Threads may be replied to if they contain a significant update or contribution to the discussion. Regarding Looking for Players & Groups, the board-specific rules for bumping threads are also in effect.
4 • Respect the moderators and their decisions.
Why? Just like in D&D, the rules can’t explicitly cover every possible scenario, and just like DMs, mods will need to make judgement calls to keep things running smoothly.
4.1 • User Expectations
Treat the moderator team with respect at all times.
Make a sincere effort to follow the forum rules, and do not instruct or encourage other users to violate the rules.
Follow any direct instruction from a moderator.
Send a private message to a moderator if you have a question about these rules.
Use the report feature to report a post the violates these rules using the instructions found below under
4.4 • Reports, Warnings, and Appeals.
The Report feature is to be used to flag moderation of content that violates these rules. Submitting false, frivolous, multiple/spam, gibberish, or harassing reports is classified as abuse of this feature.
Avoid discussion of moderator activity in public channels.
If you have any questions or concerns about a moderator action, you may send a private message to a moderator that isn't related to the action you're discussing.
If you have any concerns about a moderator, you may send a private message to a community manager.
Be polite when informing others of the forum rules or when suggesting a more suitable forum for a discussion.
4.2 • Moderator Expectations
Moderators of the Dungeons & Dragons community are expected to always uphold the general sentiment "D&D is for Everyone". Mods are expected to be inviting and welcoming, keep an open mind to new conversations, and keep all humor and general discussions PG, or family-friendly. They must not use crude or derogatory terms, talk down to users even in jest, or use othering language.
Moderators are additionally expected to strictly enforce the forum rules, and adhere to the guidelines of those rules as laid out by their Community Managers.
4.3 • Direct Instruction
Direct instruction from the moderator team may happen publicly, or it may come as a reminder through a private message. In both cases, direct instruction is not a punishment itself; it’s an opportunity to avoid one.
Public instruction is generally intended for all participants active in the discussion. Common public instructions include providing rules reminders, directing a conversation to a more suitable forum, preventing discussion that may lead to a warning, or stopping a discussion that has become unproductive or contentious.
Reminders sent as a private message are intended for a single user. These are most commonly used on a first offense for minor rules violations to simply remind the user of the relevant expectations. They may also be used to help steer a user away from behavior that could lead to a rules violation.
In all cases, direct instruction is expected to be followed, both upon delivery and in the future. Failure to do so may result in a warning, and that warning may be treated with greater severity if you’ve been explicitly reminded of a rule and then broken it anyway.
If you have any questions or concerns about an instruction you've been given, please request a private discussion with a moderator.
4.4 • Reports, Warnings, and Appeals
The D&D Beyond Report feature, located under each post, article comment, and private message, offers the opportunity to flag an item for moderator attention. These reports can be used to cite a rules violation, call attention to a particular thread, request a thread moved to another forum, call out advertisement/spam, or comment on another problem. It is always requested that the Report feature be used instead of responding, retaliating, or otherwise taking measures into one’s own hands. When reporting a comment or post, please elaborate upon the problem observed.
Warnings and Reminders may be sent out via Private Message if a rules violation has been observed. These may be accompanied with or without infraction points and will be recorded against the user account.
Warning - a formal warning of Site Rules & Guidelines violation that carries infraction points. These points accumulate through multiple violations and can lead towards forum privilege removal for increasing durations of time. The infraction points carry an expiration date (default: 120 days) where they will no longer apply towards accumulation, although the infraction record will remain in account history.
Reminder - an informational reminder of the Site Rules & Guidelines violation that does not carry infraction points. Reminders are used for minor offenses or to provide notification that a post was modified/removed by moderation and why.
An Appeal system is available to contest a received infraction or reminder in the event that one believes to have been wrongly assigned. D&D Beyond policy requires all appeals to be reviewed and addressed by a different member of the moderation team so that a fresh set of eyes can verify the integrity of issuance.
Tips to remember when filing an appeal:
Moderation will never discuss the communications, actions, or moderation taken with other users.
Moderation will only evaluate your contributions and/or behavior. The contributions and/or behavior of others are out of scope and not an acceptable excuse for your own.
Being unaware of D&D Beyond rules is not an exemption from D&D Beyond rules.
D&D Beyond rules also apply to user contributions and posts within an appeal.
Failure to respond to an appeal thread may lead to its closure.
Please provide valid reasoning towards post context, intent, and meaning when filing an appeal for review.
5 • Stay on topic.
Why? This ensures other users can join the conversations they want to have and avoid the ones they don't.
Possible violations include:
Sending messages unrelated to the current discussion.
Discussing forum moderation outside of a private discussion with a moderator or community manager
Advertising D&D products or services outside of the Advertisements forum.
All advertisements must be related to D&D and must receive permission from a moderator before posting.
Advertising non-D&D products or services in any forum.
6 • Follow Wizards of the Coast's Terms of Service.
Why? Because D&D Beyond is run by Wizards of the Coast, the Terms of Service provides legal protection for the company and its property.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
Participation by users under the age of 13.
Sharing a single account between multiple users.
Soliciting, which includes asking other users to share content with you on D&D Beyond.
Attempting to disrupt the operations of this forum or the security of its users.
Illegal activity of any kind.
6.1 • Company Criticism
Public criticism of Wizards of the Coast is not itself against the rules; however, users are still responsible for ensuring their conduct does not violate any other site rules.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
Threats of physical violence.
Doxxing (publicly sharing another person's private information).
Name-calling, insults, and other forms of harassment.
Swearing and other language not suitable for an all-ages audience.
7 • Please send all messages in English.
Why? While we love our fans from around the globe, using a single language here is necessary to ensure a safe space. Since Wizards of the Coast is based in the United States, the language for D&D Beyond is English.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
Sending messages, images, or links in another language, whether real or fictional.
Purposefully obscuring the clarity of an English message through the behaviors listed below.
7.1 • Content Clarity
Why? Even when English is used, certain behaviors can still make things harder to read or interfere with the use of screen readers.
The following behaviors are prohibited:
Using special fonts.
Sending messages that are blank, unreadable, or gibberish.
Disrupting the chat through the misuse of message formatting. For example:
Using header formatting or large fonts to make a message unnecessarily larger.
Using excessively small fonts to make text unreadable.
Using orange fonts to mimic moderator messages.
Creating a series of multiple consecutive reply posts with no context of who each post is replying to.
Creating excessively long quote chains.
Other Rules & Guidelines
Looking for Players & Groups Rules & Guidelines
For this section, the rules here are in affect and the following are prohibited as spam:
Posting the same message or community advertisement on multiple LFG posts.
Soliciting paid games in LFG posts where an interest in paid games was not expressed.
Homebrew Rules & Guidelines
When publishing Homebrew on D&D Beyond, please ensure all public submissions follow the Homebrew Rules & Guidelines as well as the other site rules above regarding copyright, prohibited content, and respecting others.
Reminders, Warnings, and Ban Durations
D&D Beyond runs on an infraction-based point system. When a rules violation is observed, a Moderator will issue either of the following notices to a user:
1. Quick Reminder The Quick Reminder only serves as notice that the cited contribution is crossing the threshold allowed by the Site Rules & Guidelines. No infraction points are assigned, though a record is kept of the occurrence.
2. Warning Notification Infraction Notifications serve as notice that the cited contribution is in violation of the Site Rules & Guidelines and has been assigned corresponding infraction points.
Warning point assignments arrive with an expiration period in which the points will remain active. Once this expiration date passes, the warning points will cease to apply to one’s account. If an accumulation of points is to occur before expiration, the corresponding suspension (ban) of forum privileges will take effect.
Note: The assignment of warning points remains at the discretion of the Moderation team, including the number of points assigned and/or ban durations for repeat violations.

Note: All D&D gaming groups and communities are located in Looking for Players & Groups . All D&D video channels and streams are located in #Streams & Video
3.9 • Spam
Spamming is not permitted on D&D Beyond. Most commonly, this relates to the excessive communication of similar phrases or unnecessary posts.
3.9.1 • Excessive Threads

5 • Stay on topic.
Why? This ensures other users can join the conversations they want to have and avoid the ones they don't.
Possible violations include:
6 • Follow Wizards of the Coast's Terms of Service.
Why? Because D&D Beyond is run by Wizards of the Coast, the Terms of Service provides legal protection for the company and its property.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
6.1 • Company Criticism
Public criticism of Wizards of the Coast is not itself against the rules; however, users are still responsible for ensuring their conduct does not violate any other site rules.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
7 • Please send all messages in English.
Why? While we love our fans from around the globe, using a single language here is necessary to ensure a safe space. Since Wizards of the Coast is based in the United States, the language for D&D Beyond is English.
Possible violations include, but are not limited to:
7.1 • Content Clarity
Why? Even when English is used, certain behaviors can still make things harder to read or interfere with the use of screen readers.
The following behaviors are prohibited:

Reminders, Warnings, and Ban Durations
D&D Beyond runs on an infraction-based point system. When a rules violation is observed, a Moderator will issue either of the following notices to a user:
1. Quick Reminder
The Quick Reminder only serves as notice that the cited contribution is crossing the threshold allowed by the Site Rules & Guidelines. No infraction points are assigned, though a record is kept of the occurrence.
2. Warning Notification
Infraction Notifications serve as notice that the cited contribution is in violation of the Site Rules & Guidelines and has been assigned corresponding infraction points.
