Hello everyone!
I hope you were able to be part of the fun at the Stream of Annihilation last weekend - we were thrilled to be a part and to announce some exciting new features on the horizon.
If you missed the D&D Beyond segment, you can take a look at the VOD here. You can also see my half-orc former-pirate-now-converted-priest-of-Selûne get picked on by Perkins yet survive a 300-foot fall and then hang out in the jungle during the Meatgrinder Showcase here.
While we're excited for Phase 2 to drop this month, the official pronunciation guide with Matt and Marisha, and the Twitch stream integration after launch, there is another significant feature we have now deployed into the beta - global search!
Global Search
Global search is crucial for us to accomplish a major component of our mission - to make game management easier for both Dungeon Masters and players at the table.
From the start of the beta, we have made it clear that a global "omni" search is a huge priority (necessity really) for DDB, but that the feature would only be available when we near the end of the beta. There are several technical reasons for this, but at the end of the day releasing it now means a couple of things: 1) you will be able to find things now really quickly, and 2) we are nearing the end of beta - we have less time left than what we've already spent.
You can use global search on any page from the top bar, the home page, or by navigating to dndbeyond.com/search. Try it out!
Please keep in mind that this is beta, and that we are actively asking for your feedback to make D&D Beyond everything the community needs. This feature is no different. If you have feedback about search or results, please share them in the Beta Feedback forum.
Thanks for all the help and support!
Thank you for this thing! I'm 100% sure I wasn't the only one hugely anticipating this.
Question: Is this also a Global Search Feedback Megathread?
I love it.
And I really hate to say this, but it shows some of the stuff that's off-limits. When I searched for Strength, among the results I saw the Battlemaster and the Firbolg, along with snippets of the relevant text, even though I couldn't click through to them (better yet, Battlemaster redirected to the Fighter with the Champion archetype visible). The good thing is that, if I search for Battlemaster, the "Top Result" on the right only shows that there is a class thing called Battlemaster and nothing else.
Honestly, I'd like to think it's fine, since the snippets are small enough to not be that useful, but I'm not sure what your licensing allows you to do.

Although my search results don't get the yellow highlights you got. I mean, I can get them with the browser's search, but then it also highlights the terms above the search results...

Also, after I get some search results, the round search "subject" buttons (characters, compendium, spells, etc.) don't narrow (or broaden) my search until I click the search icon again. That might be the desired behavior, but I expected it to filter results immediately.
Are you using elasticsearch?
Sorry. I didn't see the suggestion to report bugs over there until after I posted all this. I'll repost it over there. Maybe lock this thread?

I do stuff, sometimes.

I love the design of it, too!
This concerns me. While it is a great feature that I think is well implemented, I've seen the statement made many, many times here that global search can't be implemented until a late, almost finished, stage of the site. While that could possibly mean that things behind the scenes are far more finished than we realise, it could also mean that the developers have caved to pressure prematurely in the development cycle.
I'm hoping it's the former, but fear it may be the latter.

It is a very nice feature though and I can honestly see it being a major reason for people signing up. By far the biggest incentive to use a service like this is the convenience of finding things quickly and easily. It's a big reason why people do... not so legal things to access information digitally. So a good site like this with a good search feature could be a significant component of actively reducing the use of "alternative" methods.
