During her downtime, Rime will study her next task, a horned devil that guards a portal to one of the nine hells. Apparently, devils are resistant to cold and don’t mind poison and fire at all, also silvered weapons appear to be of some importance when no magic is available. It seems these devils are particularly lazy for their kind but still fairly intelligent. A worthy opponent, she wagers. Still as a backup plan, she gets two 4th level scroll with Psychic Lance, just in case.
Feeling prepared for the upcoming battle, Rime travels to the portal and casts Armor of Agathys (L3) with lightning damage in form of a crackling static field around her (1 sorcery point), casts pass with out trace and creates a barrier of clockwork magic (bastion of law with 5 sorcery points). She refills the third level slot and lost sorcery points with three second and one first level slot. Then she steps through the portal and tries to get unseen to 120 feet distance to the devil.
Stealth: 32 (clockwork balance, 1/3 to cancel disadvantage)
I assume that we wait for next week with the next tier encounter, right?

Sorry, I'm beginning to enter a vacation period and while I will try to check-in at least daily, I cannot promise that I will always be able to do so. From September 1, I should be back to normal.

I'm glad that everyone is excited to keep playing. I have some vacation time, so I'll be traveling tomorrow but I hope to start the next round on Sunday morning. We also have one new player starting, who wants to jump to Tier 9. I haven't selected encounters for Tier 9 yet and I was thinking about how high to go. I might just publish Tier 9, 10, 11 all at once.
Also looking for feedback from the threefold rule, I hope it's working for everyone.
Lastly, there has been requests for some of the banned items, like Animated Shield and Winged Boots. In my mind, nothing should be banned and even the most unfair tactics should be considered. I just don't want to start a trend where every participant just flies around and shoots at range some poor monster who can't fly and doesn't have ranged attacks. As far as going back and reading these posts later in the future, I feel that a one-sided battle like this would have little or no value.
The recent reset with the Gray Slaad was all my fault. I was rushing around in real life and not focused on the fight, posting from my phone and I just made too many mistakes. In my mind, players want continuity and don't want DM fudged rolls or special exceptions, so I don't want to rob anyone from a good game. But also, as the Challenge rating gets higher, I realize there are so many new factors like Magic Resistances and that I have to read all the spell descriptions carefully. With that said, I also understand that maps and special terrain features have more value than the one-on-one slugfest. I promise to bring these back, they make the DMing more complex but also give more opportunities to reward good tactics.
Give me some feedback. Feel free to post here on the thread questions and requests. Otherwise, you can send me a private message. I want to know what's missing from these battles and what it would take to get people to keep playing.
One idea to avoid fly and shoot tactics would be to fight underground in a cavern or tunnel for these encounters where monsters don’t have ranged attacks, or castles or dense forests, terrain can be an answer to nearly all one sided tactics.
