Ash, you avoid the tentacles! The spikes are pretty big holding the door shut. You scratch harmlessly at the door, like a cat wanting in from the cold.
All monsters to take 2 bludgeoning damage from the thrashing tentacles this round at the start of each of their turns.
New to this round. You all hear a loud snap, louder than any of the other snapping of wood you've heard. The octopus has crushed the ship's hull, and everyone in the lower deck can tell that the entire cargo hold is now full of water.
The creatures before Ess take their turns. They all take the damage. And difficult terrain.
Ess's DEX save at the start of his turn. 22 and damage if fail 8 from tentacles.
He avoids them!
Ess yells out to Ash and Korrik"Jeepers Forking Cripes are y'all serious BROS!"and he has quite an upset look on his face as he goes over to the door and tries to push it open as hard and as fast as he can still with the enhancement from Ben's magic.
Ess athletics: 18
He smashes the door open, and one of those huge spiders are inside!!
The creatures after Ess take their turns. They all take the damage. And difficult terrain.
Bimz returns to the deck, hovering 30 ft above the deck. Ben, you get a telepathic ping.
dwarves help coming
The corpses are now stuck underwater in the cargo hold. I took a lot of things into consideration here like underwater combat rules and other things that you currently don't know about, but all that being said, I am not allowing the corpses to make any type of attack or force open check against the trapdoor. They would never get it open given this situation, and they would've already tried and have never been successful if you knew the details about them and how they got there etc. So there's no way they'd be able to do it now, especially when the hold is full of water. They swim over to the door and try, but to no avail.
So yeah, they are currently drowning and I'm taking care of their HP on my end.
Korrik and Ash and Ess, you see water shoot up through the sides of the trap door as the cargo hold fills!
Ben is up! Need that DEX save, and damage if fail is 4 from tentacles.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Dex save: 16
((Until someone tells him there is a spider in there he can't really do much, action wise. Would Ess have said something about it?))
Until then he only calls encouragingly down,
"If that crack meant what I think it did, well done Ess!"
Then he calls encouragingly to Kay,
"Okay, magic items are all together (right?) on the port side there. Grab them and get up here."
Bardic inspiration to Kay!
He sends to Bimz,
Are things clear up top there? If so have the dwarves stay a ways out from this ship. We'll jump in and swim out to them so they don't get hit by the tentacles.
((Would taking a dodge action give Ben advantage on the next dex save from the tentacle round?))
((Okay, if Ben knows about the spider and you allow him to target a creature he can't see but can hear him, which I think is the only criteria for dissonant whispers))
"A spider?"
Ben starts hissing another tune he has translated into demonic directed at the spider.
Dissonant whispers level 2 (DC 15 wis save): 20
((Otherwise he dodges the tentacles.))
Either way he will also move two squares to the north.
Ben, you easily avoid the tentacles. Bimz will respond on his turn. you don't see it but the spider hears your tune and it absolutely can't stand it. So much so that it shrivels up in extreme pain and dies. (-20). Ess and Ash would see this happen before their eyes! Ben you then move north as described.
Ess and Ash would also now see the north door of that new room open and the hallway packed with webs, swarms of spiders and a larger spider that you haven't seen on the ship yet. You also notice some horrific demonic? monstrosities further down the hallway in this moment!
The creatures after Ben now goes. It's the monstrosities past the new spider. Korrik and Ash see 3 of them attack the new spider.
Bite: 7 Damage: 13
Bite: 13 Damage: 15
Bite: 21 Damage: 6
Two of them chomp on the spider. (-21)
One of them attacks the swarm of spiders.
Bite: 8 Damage: 17
Miss.
Korrik is up. DEX save first, DC 10, if fail 9 damage from tentacles. Korrik knows what the yellow dot is, and the red treasure box is a wooden box that is in clear view.
And, in the moment, here are the details about that new room -> the floor of that room is covered with runes written in blood. A circle has been carved into the floor’s wooden planks and spiderwebs cover the walls and ceiling. Two humanoid-sized bundles attached to the ceiling writhe as hundreds of tiny spiders swarm over them.
Maps are updated. I uncovered what you can now see (Ash and Korrik and Ess) there's another spider humanoid up in there too.
It had been a long time. 3 years or more. Still... you'd never forget this spot.
It took longer than you were planning (especially given what is going on around you), but you're able to find the board that you had hid these rings under that 3 odd years ago on that fateful day...
Each ring also has a letter engraved into it.
One ring has a 'K'
The other, a 'B'
The creatures after Korrik are now up.
The different looking spider takes a huge whack from a tentacle and gets crushed dead!
One of the other creatures makes a STR check because it has tried to open the door that Ben (or whoever) tied earlier on the main deck, north door. (again)
STR: 4
The door remains shut. Bimz can see it trying to be forced open.

Ash’sDEX save: 22
Ash screams internally at her better instincts and then hisses, “Raaasrgh! For fork sake!…”, again, and moves over to the red chest.
As she moves, she pulls out her lock picks just in case. ((Can she check if it’s locked in a fraction of a second, then use her lock picks if it’s locked?))
If so, she uses her Fast Hands skill, to use her Thieves’ Tools as a bonus action to pick the lock…
Thieves’ tools check: 20
((If it was never locked, or if it’s now unlocked, what does she see?))
((I think she still has movement and an action left))
((When I'd said 'dashes' I'd meant it descriptively, but was a Dash needed mechanically? Or could he have gotten to where he needed to be with his 35ft of movement? If he was able to get there, then use his Action to search and pocket what he finds, he'd have his bonus action left? If he needed to Dash to make it, he'd have spent ki to do it as a BA.))
((Ash could potentially scoop the chest too and run/drag it for a hand off to Ess if it's locked.))
I imagine that Ben is fairly familiar with his parties magical items' auras and is staring at the floor above with confusion as Kay runs to the wrong side then relief as Ash heads to the chest.
He mutters,
"Well at least Ash can be relied upon. I can't believe he doesn't know port from starboard after working on ships."
I will get back to this tomorrow, but here's some questions answered and other stuff to help Ash finish her turn:
- Ash could not just pick up that treasure trunk and hand it off to Ess. She could MAYBE drag it on a successful check.
- Korrik, you needed to dash to get to the location (remember it's difficult terrain so he'd only get half distance, I was going on the assumption that you used your Ki as the BA to dash there.
Ash:
The trunk wasn't locked or trapped.
Inside, you see 2 scrolls, 2 potions, a cloak, a good amount of gold (you'd estimate at least 500) and maybe half as much silver. The exact amount you can't determine in this moment.
**Ash keep in mind difficult terrain for movement as well
