Yes. Back on topic. No, dragonborn and firbolgs would not have tails. It reminds me of the anime trend of putting fox hears and tails on like, everything.
Tails is how you can tell a Dragonborn from a Half-Dragon.
I was actually running some characters through Hoard of the Dragon Queen, and I changed one of the NPCs to be a Dragonborn just so the party would have context for the half-dragon that appears early in the adventure and why him having a tail is a significant character detail.
I don’t think it’s that far fetched to see a Dragonborn with a tail. The Draconblood Dragonborns from EGW are stated to have tails. Honestly I view it in the same manner as a Dragonborn having wings, it’s a very rare but can exist.

in 2e Tieflings could have hooves too. That went away when wotc forced horns and tails on people in 4e. Now with the SCAG options, you can flavor your tieflings like you could in the original days.
EDIT: I don't ever play tieflings with horns or tails. I didn't ask for their stupid lore change, and I do not accept it since I have the SCAGs options.
Technically, horns and tails were always possible on tieflings, as well.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Also: people who take the tails off their tieflings are destined for the same special level of Hell as child molesters and people who talk at the theater. If I had a tiefling friend (or was somebody's tiefling friend), no force on Earth could stop me from playing with that thing. Don't care who knows it, either. Mmm...sexy tiffles and their sexy tails...
Can take or leave the horns and honestly the hooves can be fun - my Tyberos kitsune has paws instead of feet and it's turned into a minor but amusing plot point for her - but the tails are non-negotiable.
XGtE: "Ideas, not rules." Want a Tiefling with almost no physical Fiendish Heritage stigmata? If the DM says it's okay, then it's okay.
I kept the PHB-defined Tiefling stigmata, but customized the design so all but the eyes could be easily hidden and the eyes could be explained away - pretending to be a blind but capable Human. Took keen observation at my character to realize that aural-based awareness wouldn't be vulnerable to flanking, and someone noticed, and my character couldn't come up with a reasonable lie for it. (The player first tried to blame the DM, but the DM had to defer to me which kinda set things in motion, but to be faaaair, the fact that it was noticed was the important thing even though it was instigated OOC. I specifically tried to avoid being flanked, but it just wasn't possible that one time.)
Make things interesting. Make things exceptional. Heroes are exceptional. Make your hero the exception to the standard.
(EDIT: ...or do like I do and start with someone unexceptional that becomes exceptional through deeds. "Anyone can be a hero.")
Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
I very much like the tieflings from 3rd ed. from Races of Faerun. You got to pick one or two distinctive features depending on your ancestry and some of those were very cool:
small horns on head (demon, devil, night hag)
fangs or pointed teeth forked tongue (demon, devil)
glowing red eyes (demon, devil, night hag)
cat eyes (rakshasa)
more or less than 5 fingers (demon, devil)
goatlike legs (devil)
hooves (devil)
non-prehensile tail (demon, devil)
furry, leathery, or scaly skin (demon, devil, rakshasa)
I think it was on ******* where it says that goblins have thin, scruffy troll like tails. Trolls should obviously have it, as trolls in the original norse mythology has tails. I think firbolgs should have it as well as they are cow humanoids. I agree that dragonborns shouldn't have as it is specifically written, but then you can just chose to let your player if they want it. They can have tails in your universe, you don't have to follow the rules.
Tabaxi, leonin, satyr, kobold, lizardfolk, tabaxi, tortle, centaur, loxodon and minotaur already have their respective tails.
My point is; the animal humanoids should have their respective animal tails. The bugbear might be a stretch, but they can have the cute lil bear tail.
Personally: since dragonborn became a race instead of a transformation, I almost always give them tails because to me they look odd without them because lizardfolk have them, as do all the other "beastfolk" species.
Generally no. I keep tails away from dragonborn for the most part. However, I do permit all published player options and 3rd party content on a case-by-case basis. Critical Role content is an automatic yes and draconblood have tails.
I'm playing as a dragonborn with a tail. It has zero affects, but its just cool. Honestly, as long as its just to flavor the character, I dont really see why a dragonborn shouldnt be allowed to have a tail if the player wants one. I know it goes against canon, but who cares? Dragon people look good with dragon tails!

I let both of them have tails, because I find it aesthetically pleasing and it's 100% flavour so who will stop me?
