Hello, did as much googling as I can, and I cannot find a way to customize the dice that appear under a character's actions.
I wanted to make a weapon that deals 1d12 damage and is a ranged weapon, and has 1 charge that is expended upon use, and can be restored as a bonus action or action.
How can I get that effect to show up on a character sheet in the circumstance that a player has the homebrewed item in their inventory and also is wielding it?
You cannot. There is no 1d12 ranged weapon so you cannot make one. As to the charge, they would just have to uncheck the box that represents the charge was spent. (There is no way to set a charge to refresh on an action, and there is no way to attach an action to a magic item.)
You can make a magic weapon based on whatever is closest to the ranged weapon you have in mind. For example, use a longbow as a base for 1d8 and then add a Modifier of Damage, Piercing, DEX, 1 die, 1d4. That would be a simple way to simulate close to a 1d12 roll.

Yeah, but the d4 won’t automatically get rolled. It would still have to be remembered and rolled individually by the player. I mean, the math’s pretty darned close, close enough for me anyway. But the system will still treat it as a d8 weapon. There’s no way to actually “do that.”

The extra 1d4 rolls automatically just fine for me.

Are you using a browser extension like Beyond20? If so, it’s that extension doing it, not DDB. DDB has no way of doing that.

no that method does not roll an extra die. Im trying to make a 1d12 great hammer with a 1d8 die....will not let me add the extra die. Additionally moronic is the fact you cannot "create" new items only base them on previous versions that do not incorporate your vision.

You cannot add extra damage dice to a weapon. If you want to make a weapon that uses 1d12 as it's damage die, you are limited to a greataxe or a lance as your melee choices or a musket or a musket (exandria) as your ranged choices.
As for Stony_Tark wanting a weapon that does 3d10 damage, maybe add the versatile property to a laser rifle (the only 3d8 weapon). I've not tried it myself to know for sure.

That should work, it works to make a 2d8 Greatsword.

Oh well, then use that. (No firearms in my campaigns.) Won’t be able to change the ranges though.

Is there a magic weapon that does 3d10?
Nope, not that I know of.

Moronic? Perhaps. Familiarize yourself with the Everything you need to know about homebrew weapons thread on how to work around those limitations.
