So I've been spitballing this idea in my head for a couple of days. A creature larger than you hits you with an attack of significant force, say an adult red dragon's tail attack, and you then have to make a strength save or be pushed 5-10ft away.
Thoughts? Pros and cons of this?

I would rule that opportunity attacks don't apply. I know there are already certain things that will force movement and they don't trigger attacks if I'm remembering correctly.

Forced movements never triggers any Oportunity Attacks. But if the monster automatically flings people away with every attack, then:
The PCs would never get OAs against the monster, and the monster would never get any against the PCs.
I don't think the proposal is to automatically fling them away, only to make a Strength check like for being shoved or similar effects.
On that note I'd probably allow the choice of either a Dexterity or Strength saving throw for the creature that is hit, so Rogues, Monks etc. that maybe haven't got high Strength can still stay in place by dodging, throwing themselves down as they begin to be pushed and so-on, so they manage to remain in place as well. Shoving/grappling allows a choice of checks so I think it makes sense to allow a choice of saves in a similar way.

I should have been more specific. When I wrote “automatically” what I meant was “without an option to not fling the PC away.”
I wouldn't make it for every attack either. I was thinking it would really have to make sense in the moment. In the example I gave with the dragon, if it slams the tail down then you're not going anywhere, but if he swipes at you, well you might go for a trip.

I would still say that it needs an actual limiting mechanic, such as N times per Long Rest equal to Str mod or something, and only if it is at least two sizes larger than the target.

If this is specifically an action that a monster can take, then in its stat block you should put something like (Recharge 5-6) next to the name of the action. Look at dragons' breath weapons and stuff, you'll know what I'm talking about.
If you don't know what Recharge means, basically you roll a d6 at the start of the monster's turn, and if the result is within the range of numbers listed, the monster can use that action again (given it's already used up its use of it).

I would be concerned with action economy as that will potentially mess with Opportunity Attacks and disengagement.
