"Climbing over the floor, now more a wall, that once stood between the third and fourth floor, the source of the fire bolt, standing on the narrow stone that was the fourth floor, stands the Cobalt Mage, his hooded cloak waving in the wind."
Edit for clarity: on the topview map, there is a Large blue square near the bottom of the image, the line just above it represents a wall that was a floor. He is standing on it (specifically so you csn see him... otherwise he could have just hopped down behind the wall to stand in the former fourth floor, or possibly right through the window if he wanted to escape to the lake.. but he didn't. Instead he's skylined in clear view of everybody, unless they're underneath the opening tower, and even then, maybe partial cover? Looking through the window from underneath.)
<Fluff text issue; there was never a fire bolt, originally I was going to have this cantrip, but then I decided on the armor instead.>
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(From that description, it seems like the Cobalt Mage is very close to where Tabaqui, Angus and Hamish are located. If Hamish manages to get within melee distance of the mage, Tabaqui will get sneak attack damage.)
One of the tines of the trident grazes Tabaqui's back, but he shrugs off the injury and aims his longbow at the mage.
<Tabaqui used his action last round to dash over the water, wearing a ring of water walking, toward Angus and Hamish. From there, the water elemental that attacked him could make that attack and then head inside the keep (rolls for ranged and melee are the same in this case, unless he melee'd with both hands, then the damage die would be bigger). The other elemental also headed into the keep, then made his attack. It's not really possible for Hamish, despite being a giant, to reach through the window overhead and then another 25 ft across the former floor to where the mage was. He could however chuck a rock at him. Likewise, a melee attack seems impossible from Tabaqui barring some special movement. If the previous rolls can be commuted to a ranged attack, they can be applied at your discretion. Sorry I couldn't tokenize the map earlier. Another option - if you'd like to try it.. since Hamish could throw 2 boulders, but can't find any in a lake at the moment, there is the old Fastball Special which would allow the melee attack - because that would be awesome. Offer applies to Angus as well (though melee would be next round)>
Angus will cast cure wounds at 2nd level on Hamish for 5 hp, and say, "Can you throw me far enough to reach the mage? or to help our friends? That wurm is going to be a problem."
< Ah-hah! I missed this before. I guess great minds think alike.... Done and done.>
Hamish lifts the Paladin and toesses him toward through the window to the spot just below the mage. (sorry I am adding this after the post.. it would be hamish backing away from the keep and tossing Angus through the window over the closest Banner of Blades ("A") and then he'd be able to grab the rafters of the 3rd floor ceiling. That will require a Str check (DC14) to hold on, otherwise he falls between the two blades below.)
(Tabaqui's attack was a ranged longbow attack. But if Hamish chucks Angus up there close to the mage, that would give me the sneak attack damage for my arrow.)
<My long response, probably roo long, but I hope it clarifies the intention of this challenge. It's the kind of thing that happens when the BBEG in a campaign is an Illusion Wizard - stuff is just weird and unexpected and the line between reality and Illusion is blurred.>

(ooc: not sure what you mean by a work around? in 5e the rules for doffing heavy armor is 50 rounds. if I can't get out of the armor I can't cast any spells. do you mean another work around to get out of the armor?... or a work around for doing stuff while keeping the armor on?)
Yes. It's not chess, there are always cases the rules weren't designed for. In this case, becasue of the unusual nature of the situation, my interpretation of what is possible is more relaxed. If my wizard was in your shoes, I'd polymorph. The rules on it are unclear as to which occurs to gear - it's either melted into the new form or dropped on the ground. There are many spells that explicitly state objects are effected as if part of the person, but there's probably some wiggle room there. I'm also aware of various monsters that will damage armor to the point where it is destroyed. That would certainly also work if you could create the same effect - I'm not sure how. I might even agree to treat the armor as I would an escape from [Tooltip Not Found] This isn't that, but the idea is similar enough thst the escape mechanic described would probably also apply. It's not really up to me tonsay hie you should try to escape.. though I do think it's best to escape. If Tyreus had identified Calners school of magic, and decided somatic components were very important, he may have just used some sort of mannacles: if verbal, perhoas some aort of bit ir gag. This is a wider net, so not as durable but pretty effective- as such any DC for this would he lower than anything else. Not everything would warrant a DC - some things are not possible by chance alone, and DCs will vary based on what is attempted, while still other options could succeed with no DC.
Hiding in the keep is viable, but Tabaqui dashed out onto the lake. He can dash back in or hide but not both, unless I'm missing something. It's just that hide has a prerequisite of having something to hide behind. Even if he took the ring off to submerge, I already ruled that PCs could target submerged elementals, so using the water to hide would be a dubious proposition at best.
Also, Tabaqui should have rolled with DA, so definitely no sbeak attack. I failed to include it, mostly because i had a lot of things to juggle, but its also part if an effort to create an atmosphere of uncertainty commensurate with the powerful illusionmagic combined with the creative power if the stone of creations, but it is a thing from his stat block. There are conditions that can remove it, but it's hard to say just why without telling you exactly the BBEGs weakness. Ultimately I called it a hit and it stays a hit, but no sneak attacks unless the DA is negated. I'll let you all know if the condition changes.
Tooltip was supposed to be iron bands of binding (I used Billaro, but apparently DnDB went SRD). (?)
By no mechanical answer or however I phrased it, I mean there is no defined method for resolution ie roll a DC20 escape, though it's not crazy. Maybe sleight of hand.
If you had some elemental means of damaging the armor and also resistance to it, kr better even, immunity, that would be oretty cool (thinking of my old draconic sorcerer. I would definitely let acid damage the ring mail, but also its wearer). I like the idea of cutting the straps, but my ruling method is based on exceotio s thst prove the rule. That said, I could try assigning a DC for the destruction of the armor, but this is in a world where it is sufficiently difficult to do while trying not to drown that mariners are getting them enchanted for this purpose - so it's a pretty high DC or a nominal DC per strap times n number of straps each its own ca. 6 second action.
3.5 was very clear on how hard it was to destroy objects, 5e us much more DM discretion here. I could rule it, but this discussion is mostly me encouraging creativity, but ultimately I won't say it's impossible, just might work out that way if your Str score isn't high enough. Of its what you want to commit to, though, I can divine a DC or break jt I ro smaller lower DC tasks, but it's up to you. 9 just run the monsters and resolve the effects of your choices.
I like crazy ideas. Not sure if it would work. Being early is rarely fatal for a 10th+ level PC, at least not right away. And yeah, my wizard couldn't cast polymorph if he was bound in armor. Someone else would have to, but I was just brainstorming. Honestly most of what Tyreus has in his statblock is really awful, so being wrapped in a metal sweater isn't all that bad compared to what comes next. You could always just pretend you're a Barbarian and swing sord.
Four Blades fire on Tabaqui. 1 6 for 7 2 8 for 9 3 13 for 11 4 15 for 8
Tyreus blasts the elf with a lightning bolt for [roll]8d6]/roll] (DC18 Dex save for ½) (Legendary action) ,takes place immediately after tabaquis turn, which I think ends with him back inside the keep, let me know if I'm mistaken about that.

Attack: 23 Damage: 12 magical piercing + (potentially) 11 sneak attack.
And with his movement, Tabaqui will take cover behind one of the ceiling/walls, and use his bonus action to attempt to hide.

Tabaqui's arrow hits Tyreus. Angus holds fast to the ceiling rafters below.
