Cale chuckles at Inglenook and says "Hang in there little buddy, we might need you for the element of surprise!"
Answering the Professor, he says "Maybe plan A was good - we blag our way in and then head for the prison, like we'd be expected to with prisoners. I can free them and then we're off"
Kirari hears the layout and the numbers feeling momentarily hopeless then checks her mood, "Yes. A stealthy approach seems the only way. I will follow your lead. Just straight in to the first tower then?"
Yes, that is okay if Cale and Inglenook would like to draw the map and then cast minor illusion.
It looks like the sun is starting to hand a little lower, so it would definitely be nightfall after trekking the last couple of miles to the camp (just let me know when you are ready to "greet" the guard tower).
The professor prepares for the upcoming encounter. He’s ready to do his part and try to talk them through the gate. The darkness will only help with their disguises. He turns to his group of friends, “Whenever you all are ready, let’s do this. Those of you posing as prisoners… better give your weapons to us cultists. Cale…. Keep those thief tools in your boot or something. You may need them to get out later. Hail Tiamat!”
Kirari relinquishes her weapons preferring to strap them to one of the Mules allowing for easy reach should a fight break out as she tries to linger close to them in the marching order. She leaves injuries plain to be seen, barely treating only to prevent them worsening, crossing her hands behind her slightly hidden from view so their lack of secureness is not readily apparent. Looking absolutely miserable with a hint of embarrassment at being a large half orc captured by mostly humans, randomly snarling mufled curses at the lot - careful not to be too loud.
Cale tucks his tool kit into his boot. "Well, I normally hide them somewhere a little less comfortable if I'm expecting to be searched, but I'll take my chances this time" he winks to the professor.
His own weapons stashed with the mules, Cale looks down at his hands and ponders how useful it would be if he could conjure weapons or missiles like he had seen others do. As he dwells on the thought, his palms glow the same purple colour he saw burst from them during Travis's fight with the dragon champion. Surprised and unsettled, he clenches his fists and glances around to check if anyone saw the phenomenon, unsure of what it means.
As the group proceeds down the road, the watch fires burn brightly up ahead. You would see the guard tower coming into view, but there doesn't seem to be a makeshift gate made in this natural horseshoe formation. The watchtower looks like it must have been constructed by kobolds as some bits of wood are crudely lashed together and the roof does not seem to make a straight line.
As the party gets closer, a kobold calls out from the guard tower. "Hail Tiamat! Who Goes There?!"
(I can take checks on Performance or Deception and then any Stealth checks)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Thaddeus stands straight and tried to act confident and secure in the knowledge that they belong here. “Hail Tiamat! We are late returning with our plunder. We got separated from the force and were attacked. We managed to fight them off but we lost some of our numbers. We have more prisoners though!”
The professor kicks one of the nearby prisoners in the back of the leg. “These fools thought to reclaim some of what we took from Greenest!”
"Ooouch," shouts Inglenook as he gets kicked in the leg by Thaddues. "Son of a...." And then in a quieter voice out of the corner of his mouth he says to the bard. "Gonna kick your ass when we're done with this."
Approaching the tower, Kirari glances up at the crude structure and the archaeologist in her cringes at how fragile it appears hoping they won't be ascending it any time soon. To someone close by other than Thaddeus she mumbles, "That place would be quick work with a Tinderbox." Then sags her head and staggers a little as Thaddeus kicks at Inglenook as if she's already suffered a little of this treatment herself. performance20
Travis stands silently, looking down, not wanting to disrupt the professor's performance with even a simple "Hail Tiamat." He's ready to deploy his sword should it come to it but he knows playacting has never been his strong suit...
Cale also keeps his head down, leaving the talking to those who can actually do it in the right circumstances. He knows that he's good with a quip, but not a convincing blag.
The kobold nods quickly at your story, fully convinced of the party's performance and deception. He calls down: "More prisoners for the pen!!! More treasure for the goddess!!!"
Six kobolds approach the party and offer to lead the prisoners over to the large circle-shaped enclosure. Sharpened poles line the makeshift fence with an opening that is had a crude metal latch to keep the gate to the pen closed. There are about two dozen prisoners enclosed with women, men, and children. The kobolds grab Inglenook and Kiari quite roughly and shove them into the pen. The people include half-elves, half-orcs, halfings, and humans, and they all keep their eyes down as the new captives join them.
The kobold shouts down at the professor, "Take the loot to the boss!"
(Does the party want to split up or do you have a clever idea for all sticking together?)
Kirari attempts to pocket her light hammer or a dagger from the mule before they get too close and tucks her amulet under her clothing to keep it from view. As she is shoved into the pen, she glances at the crude metal latch securing the pen to determine how it works. (locks or just latches from the outside?) Moving into the pen, she stumbles a little mixing herself with the existing prisoners to avoid revealing anything she may have pocketed or the amulet and assess their health visually.
Travis keeps quiet still. He eyes the pen where the prisoners are enclosed, judging as best he can if the door latch would stand up to a good hard blow from a booted foot or an armored shoulder. He waits for Thaddeus to take the lead in dealing with their next move.
Kiari would notice that it latches from the outside. The six or so kobolds are in charge of the pen, and the group would see some additional drakes prowling about as guards. (Let’s also get a Dexterity check to see if you deftly palm those items).
Being both the first in the pen, Kiari and Travis would notice right away that there is a tied up half elf at the far side beyond the main crowd of prisoners.

Thaddeus responds to the kobold. “Of course! Loot for the boss.” He then looks at his “prisoners” being escorted into the makeshift pens. He nods to the kobolds escorting them. “They shouldn’t be much trouble. We took all the fight out of em and made em march the last several miles!” He throws back his head and laughs at the prisoners.
He looks about trying to discern where he’s supposed to take the “loot.” 18 Investigation

Travis looks at the others. "I will hang back a bit and follow your lead as needed," he says. "If the situation warrants, I will be ready to move in."
