(DM) It appears that the Party is headed for its first combat encounter. Here's how Combat will be ran. Everyone will Initiative, but do not post your actions until I prompt you to do so. Remember, This is Hardcore so, we're using Crimson Escalation which means the chance for a critical hit increases by 1 each round. Spellcasters don't forget you have to roll to cast a spell. (10+ on a D20 and you succeed. Roll a Nat 20 and you don't lose the spell slot. Roll a Nat 1 not only do you not cast the spell, but you lose access to that spell slot until you finish a long or short rest. BTW. The spell slot you lose is the highest one used to cast that particular spell )
Suddenly, Five very large wolves burst from the mists about 75 feet away charging towards the Party. Their sharp teeth bared.
As the others respond to Evrik's request for a burial, his eyes drift off into the distance as the vision tries to creep in. First one small twitch, then a slightly larger movement. Evrik shakes his head, dislodging the thought for a moment as he looks at the halfling and then to Salman. "It is more than just proper, I've seen," his voice tapers off and he bites his lip. "Well, I don't like it but will heed your advice for now."
And as he is finishing his thought, the wolves begin to amass and Salmon calls them all to arms. Evrik's focus changes quickly as he grips his hammer tightly. He lifts it up so that the head of the hammer is just near his lips and he whispers, "Looks like it's your time Myke. Make him proud." Evrik circles up next to Salmon and readies himself for the inevitable attack.
[Initiative - 12]
My Ready action is to swing my hammer, two-handed, against the first wolf that attacks me.

(DM) Hey gang I want to try something. I had the same campaign on Roll20. I had to discontinue running it due to work, but I never delated it. I thought we could use it to keep track of things during combat. I've assigned everyone a character sheet, so when, or if you feel like it pop on over and fill it out.

I forgot that Dread Ambusher can't be used on a crossbow without Crossbow Expert feat! …I hope my PC won't die until he reaches level 4 and gets that feat.……Also I forgot that I have double proficiency bonus with WIS check in the forest. Sorry, everyone. So embarrassing)
Gideon will strike with booming blade, striking one handed with his longsword at the nearest wolf. In his other hand he defense with his shield, emblazoned with the purple dragon of Cormyr.

Technically you have to ready an action on your turn in combat, but for dramatic purposes those who had readied an action my use their Reaction.
(DM) Ignore the attacks and any damage. The DWs would have spend the 1st round using the Dash action to close the distance.

(DM) Those of you that had ranged weapons can use them as the Dire wolves won't be in melee range until the end of the turn.
