Sly notes the information about the treasure, nodding along. 'That will be a start, perhaps we can sell some of it', she thinks.
The information about Ivory and Hugh also made sense. At least those two would be out of her hair for now. She closes her book and follows Bilyur.
The wizard looks at the adventuring gear donation chest with suspicion. Is it magical at all? If it isn't, she will use mage hand to open it from the entrance.
Sly detects no magic from the chest or this room at all, and successfully opens it with mage hand. Nothing is visible inside from the distance you're at.
It's fairly bare inside; the chest holds 16 copper pieces, 12 silver pieces, 15 gold pieces, 2 silver bells matching Gruldrop's design valued at 5 SP each, and 3 emeralds the exact same size and cut as the ones in Karistride's puzzle, valued at 5 GP each. There's also a note reading 'Kimmel and the gang was here!' with a rather crude drawing of what is assumedly the Blood Archivist beneath.
Sly informs the party: "There is some coinage here. We shan't be affording a castle with it, but perhaps it'll meet the expense of an inn on the way. I propose we split the money. I'll keep a hold of the emeralds and bells, to sell at the next convenience. Once I do, I shall dispense the share."
The wizard looks at the party for signs of acquiescence. She takes all of the valuables out of the chest and doesn't think twice about leaving anything of her own.
Sly uses money that she had been carrying for everyone so far to supplement the share (4 cp) and retains some money to add to the next share (2 sp), in order to split it better. She hands everyone: 4 copper pieces, 2 silver pieces, 3 gold pieces [I think the active party includes 5 members?]
"Sounds more than fair." says Eggo Lass as Sly distributes the coins. She eyes Xarkris, "I assume the adamantine plate could do you good. Would you like to press on and fight the armor for the armor?"
Xarkris responds to Eggo Lass with a nod, as he looks at coins in his hand. “I think that armor would be a very good addition to my inventory….I hope it fits”
Deciding you want to face the Animated Armour Gauntlet in order to earn Xarkris a set of Adamantine Plate, you all head south, since that's the direction Karistride said it would be. You come to a room but stop at the entrance and whoever is at the front of the party (assumedly Xarkris) peers in to analyse the environment. It's a fairly small room, and there are seven sets of armour inside overall; six regular iron plate suits that look like they could be worn by an Aarakocran guard, scattered in ramshackle positions about the room, and a more ornate suit made of adamantine seated on a throne, which you guess was Leri's. Although it's shaped for an Aarakocra, the Medium Humanoid shape would still fit Xarkris fine, especially the larger helmet made to accommodate a bestial head. Behind the throne is an enclosed perch to view over the room from, which you would have found earlier had you gone south in the first room. Remembering Karistride's words, you recall that as soon as you approach the Adamantine Plate, the rest of the armour will animate. Sly can confirm this by sensing an aura of transmutation magic around each one.
Xarkris walks into the room and examines the contents. He stops near the first set of armor, on the northern wall. I made a PERCEPTION roll of 10 (Yes, that’s with ADVANTAGE) so I will depend on my PASSIVE PERCEPTION of 22. I study the first set of armor, and I rolled a NAT 20 for INVESTIGATION…with a -1 penalty, the total is 19.
I want to determine if I can remove the armor without a reaction from it. ((My thinking is, if I can remove it and take it to the previous room and try to destroy it))
Xarkris gets close to the armour to look at it but stands just out of it's line of sight and range so he doesn't trigger it to animate. He investigates it all over, thoroughly, and discovers a number of things about the craftsmanship, hidden details, and can even gather some context clues on where it might have been made, but can't seem to find a way to dismantle or remove the amour from the room without it animating and therefore triggering the rest of them. It seems the only way to actually deal with them is to fight them all head on.
As for what else he pieces together, he finds that the armour has dedicated slits on the back for wings, gauntlets with no fingertips for talons, and wind shaped patterns around weld lines, which seem to be all unique to an Aarakocran smith. The helmets are also shaped like eagle's heads, with gaps for beaks, and you assume this design choice served both a stylistic and intimidating purpose as much as the helmet design also held a practical defence purpose. Since you haven't seen a forge yet in this dungeon, you guess that there's either one you haven't found yet here, or that Leri's Roost is multiple levels above and below, throughout the whole mountain; that would make the most sense if it housed an entire community, so below you there may be barracks, forges, kitchens, and extended mines. Perhaps that's what's locked off at the bottom of Karistride's room by the Shadow Weave.
TL:DR: Lots of fun facts about the armour but you can't move it without them all attacking.
Xarkris walks back to join the others to tell them what he discovered.
”I have a plan. The rest of you go back to previous room and set up defensive positions. I will activate the ANIMATED ARMOR, then disengage back to the line. They will be funneled down the corridor and we will have the advantage”
"I like the idea of funneling them." replies Eggo Lass. "Though I have to wonder," she waves her wand and gestures towards one of the armors, "if we might be able to activate them from afar. Then instead of needing to disengage, we could just lie in wait."
"Shan't not now but not shan't not later! Thanks!" Salamander happily takes the coins from Sly, hopping off Xarkris's back and shoving the coins into his jacket pockets. Into the dungeon chest he take out his small knife and carves this:
He also slips off and tosses away his leather armor, which was under his jacket, into the chest, stating, "No more need if we got some fancy armor just waiting here on us just ahead!"Thinking over Xarkris's plan, he nods rapidly. "Yep! Yes! Yep! Yep!"
At Eggo Lass's suggestion, he shrugs, "Do you have one of those spectral hand thingys? You can poke it! YEAH! Poke it! Poke it! Poke it!"Blinking a lot and getting too wrapped up excited into this idea he just straight transforms into a bull. Silly little grubby goblin hands turn into hooves, and his tail becomes short and bristle. Horns sprout from his head, and he trashes his head about. His hooves prance about the floor. Something tells you he is very much happy about this plan.
Sly summons her spectral hand with a practiced motion. "I believe I can help with that."
She looks at the others for signs of readiness and if everyone is in place, will boop the armor from a 30 feet distance. The tiefling will rely on the tanky members of the troupe to cover her retreat.
Xarkris positions himself in the previous room, at the end of the corridor. He will leave just enough of a gap for the Tiefling to get by him. He will ready his shield and axe and wait for the armor.
As you all position yourselves for combat, Sly activates the armour by booping it with mage hand. The one she touches jolts to animation, and all the others around it soon follow. With their blindsight they can detect Xarkris is at the front of the group (since they're at the door/in the corridor so in line of sight to one of them), and so each rush forward, their armour violently clangingm, eventually cramming into the corridor to squeeze forward.
Initiative has begun! Only one Animated Armour is within melee range at a time as long as Xarkris holds the line at the front to keep them from spreading out in the next open room.
