Reaction: Uncanny Dodge on last attack reducing to 5 bludgeoning. (i was going to active it on first attack but i have to be able see the attacker first)
When an attacker that you can see hits you with an attack, you can use your reaction to halve the attack’s damage against you.
Bonus Action: Cast Hunter's Mark at 1st level on the tentacle beast grapling me. (+1D6)
Taken offguard the elf grab his rapier in a panic and attack the tenacles holding him. Action: Attack: Attack: 16 Damage: 15 Extra Attack: Attack: 26 Damage: 7 Dread Ambusher Attack(+1D8): Attack: 15 Damage: 18
Lucky to keep his hands free of the creature's grasp, Nox stabs at it in rapid succession after marking it. The tentacles wiggle chaotically, and the stalker only manages to hit once (Balhannoth - CMD: 7).
LAIR ACTION
The aberration then tries to elude its prey, turning itself invisible to Nox once again.
-> Nox WIS saving throw {DC 16}: 8. Still grappled, Nox knows where one of the tentacles are, but the rest of the creature becomes shrouded once again.
“Ay, I suppose you’re right. I trust Nox, he’s always come back before.” Dredge follows behind Karwin, casually casting control flames to bring the light from one of the sconces with him into the dark room.
(@poke: If others say yes, you’d be able to reach Y25 and look into the room in search of your companion. You wouldn’t be able to see the creature holding Nox at the end of this large room because your darkvision does not reach that far. Regardless, you’d still have your action and 5 more feet worth of movement. To clarify, the creature is only invisible to Nox at the moment, but is still too far into the darkness for you to see it. Karwin can nonetheless, probably hear some struggle from her potential position at Y25).
(@Hydra: I’m not so sure that Control Flames can be used that way. The spell specifically says you need fuel to move the flame. Not a big deal, so if you want it to work this way for flavor I’m OK with it but we could alternatively say you rip a sconce off of he wall).
Dredge and Karwin agree to track back. Upon seeing the druid reach for a wall sconce, the cleric offers to illuminate the way for him. Dredge's greatsword now shines with its own light. They start walking and stop just shy of entering the large dark room. Between Karwin's Goggles of Night and Dredge's lit-up sword, the two can see perhaps up to the beginnings of the sandy portion of the room. Although they cannot see Nox, they can hear the elf struggling. He is definitely fighting something big deep within this vast chamber.
LEGENDARY ACTION (end of Karwin's turn)
Being invisible in Nox's eyes, the Balhannoth will attempt to bite at its grappled prey.
-> Bite Attack (melee weapon attack with advantage) vs. Nox: Attack: 24 Damage: 37 piercing. Blood goes everywhere. Nox is in bad shape.
LEGENDARY ACTION (end of Dredge's turn)
Sensing others approaching, the Balhannoth take its prey farther away
-> Teleport to square AS35 along with Nox. The ranger can see a bit more of the area from his new position.
Lot follows his companions back to the threshold leading into the large dark room. Without entering, he tries to get a glimpse of Nox at around his last known position, without realizing that he has been teleported away.
LEGENDARY ACTION (end of Lot's turn)
Aiming at further confusing its prey, the Balhannoth turns invisible once again.
-> Vanish: becomes invisible (this time to everyone, not only Nox).
Once again, Nox knows the creature's general location since he is grappled by one of its tentacles, but since the Balhannoth is invisible once more, the elf cannot tell from which direction the attack will come, or its timing.
-> Bite (melee weapon attack with advantage) vs. Nox: Attack: 20 Damage: 29 piercing. More blood everywhere. Unless Nox can do something with a reaction, he is now unconscious.
Now visible again, the monster then uses two of its tentacles to try to split Nox's limp body apart.
-> Tentacle (melee weapon attack) vs. Nox: Attack: 20 Damage: 6 bludgeoning. It hits, so it counts as a critical damage-wise as per the unconscious condition. This counts as 2 failed DEATH saving throws.
-> Tentacle (melee weapon attack) vs. Nox: Attack: 23 Damage: 14 bludgeoning. This also hits, so it also counts as a critical damage-wise as per the unconscious condition. This counts as 2 failed DEATH saving throws. Unless Nox can react somehow, this counts as his first DEATH.
Limbs go everywhere and the Balhannoth begins to eat elf chunks.
22. A 21. Nox - DEAD 20. Lair 09. Karwin 06. Dredge 04. Lot 01. Balhannoth
(Nothing happens until it is the Lair's turn again).
(@Palfatreos: Unless you have an ace up your sleeve to keep Nox alive, let me know if you'd like to bring him back once, or roll on the Reincarnate table).
LAIR ACTION
Karwin begins to feel some foul magic affect her head, then down her shoulder and arms (WIS saving throw {DC 16}: 22). Whatever it was, she was able to nullify with some impromptu concentration.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Come on, something doesn't feel right." Karwin says. She walks carefully into the room, searching for any sign of what caused that strange feeling upon her.

”Agreed. Something here is definetly wrong. We should be on guard.” He sheaths his sword before casting pass without trace (OOC: Genasi racial) on the group and asking Karwin to de-light the sword.
(Turning off the light is an action, so can't do it this round. Also it's probably already alerted anything nearby anyway since it entered the doorway.)
@Lerus because Nox went before getting absolutely murdered, wouldnt he be able to use uncanny dodge to reduce that 37 damage to 18? By my math and his current hit points in the campaign sheet, he would be simply unconscious, no death saves or fails.
(@Hydra, yes he would. Waiting on Palfatreos here to confirm and then we can edit accordingly).
Actually, let me reconsider that. The enemy was invisible for that bite for 37 damage, so no dodging uncannily there. It was also invisible for the first attack of its own round. The first attack Nox would be able to react with an uncanny dodge would be the first tentacle attack from the enemy’s own turn. By that time, Nox was already unconscious. So I’m afraid that won’t be a recourse...
Nox used his reaction before we rolled for initiative, so technically he would still have his reaction for the first round. Nonetheless, he’d need to see the enemy, so....
I dont think i can, so if i read the the post correctly all the attack are before the first round ended? because i already used my reaction in the first round on a tentacle attack. oh i though the tentacle attack where from A since it rolled a higher initiative then me.
Not that it really matter both bite attack was when he was invisble and the description of uncanny dodge say *When an attacker that you can see hits you with an attack*, so i cant even dodge those? (i am actually pretty new to dnd so i am not confident if i got mechanics right, so if anybody can point if i am wrong i happely dodge the first bite i am elegible for.)
(@lerus i am opting for rerolling although i dont fully understand what change/stay the same. Din't expect to die in 1 round those bites are nasty.)
UPDATED MAP:
(Nox, you are up)
"I feel we should wait another moment for our companion." Karwin advises to the others, looking to Lot. "They were with you just a moment ago, right?"
(OOC: holy crap i am far away from the group)

(Basically, if the other say yes, then walk 30 feet back towards the start, no need to dash as no immediate peril is noticeable.)

"If you wish for light, you need only ask." Karwin tells Dredge. Since she hasn't used her action, she can cast it on an object upon Dredge's person.
Lot turns around "Where did they....?" He looks back at his companions "Yea, we should find him before moving on."
