After about another days travel, evening comes and the rutted track emerges from a wooded hillside, and you catch your first glimpse of Phandalin. The town consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings, some built on old fieldstone foundations. More old ruins — crumbling stone walls covered in ivy and briars — surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past. Most of the newer buildings are set on the sides of the cart track, which widens into a muddy main street of sorts as it climbs toward a ruined manor house on a hillside at the east side of town.
As you approach, you see children playing on the town green and townsfolk tending to chores or running errands at shops. Many people look up as you approach, but all return to their business as you go by.
Sildar seems much more at ease. “My friends,” he says, “let us secure lodgings. I’m told the local inn is very quaint. And you have business at Barthen's Provisions, and Lionshield Coster.”
(You are coming in from the North. The town is small enough that it takes only a few minutes to stroll from one end to the other. However, you arrive late in the day and can’t get to more than one or two locations before it’s time to seek lodgings for the night. Sildar’s plan is to get some rest at the Stonehill Inn, then search Phandalin for signs of the missing wizard, Iarno Albrek. A simple look around reveals that there’s an inn, a town hall, a shrine, general stores and trading posts, and a few other homes and businesses. Where do you want to go?)

Fjolnir leans over to Az, "When it comes to talking, I'm leaving it to Man's Best Friend. I'm more like his curmudgeonly neighbor." And then he slips off the passenger side of the coach board. "I'll hit a trading Post or so off the main drag, and to get the lay of it. If you hit the inn before me, order me a blonde bitter." He walks by, slapping Sildar's thigh jovially, "Have her bring beer." Fjolnir walks and makes note of all the signs or banners, when available, that identify what buildings are which, and enters the first merchant he sees."
I want to go to the trading posts and the general store if possible but plan on going with at least one other person so I hop off the cart with Fjolnir. I am specifically looking for a Rapier and any magic scrolls or a book of spells anything unique and maybe a health potion
Heading South through town, Fjolnir and Hymir slide off the wagon at Barthen's provisions, Absinthe at the Shrine, Sildar and Dirk at the Stonehill Inn, and Az Emberi drives the wagon with the crates to Lionshield Coster.
Fjolnir and Hymir:
A lean and balding human male shopkeeper of fifty years stands behind the counter of the large building marked Barthen's Provisions. There are two young clerks moving items around on shelves behind him in the warehouse area. As the door opens he looks up with a smile and says, "Welcome! We have many items for purchase and- is that my wagon going by outside?" His smile gets bigger and he comes around the counter. "Are you the folks Gundren tasked with delivering it? Ah, wonderful! But, where is Gundren? He was supposed to be here before you."
Absinthe:
Phandalin’s only temple is a small shrine made of stones taken from the nearby ruins. Nearby is a young elf woman, packing up for the evening. She greets you with a smile. Tymora bless you with luck.Come to pray, or donate? You're welcome here anytime, but I'm only here for guidance during the day. My name is Garaele. She notices the wagon and the rest of your party continue on. She looks at your blood covered garments. She gulps loudly. Tell me what troubles you, child.
Dirk:
In the center of town stands a large, newly built roadhouse of fieldstone and rough-hewn timbers.
The common room is filled with locals nursing mugs of ale or cider, all of them eyeing you with curiosity. The proprietor is a short, friendly young human male. As you enter he gives a smile and a wave. The townsfolk go back to their drinks. Sildar goes right to the bar, Toblen, I'd like a room please, if you've got one.
Az Emberi:
You drive the wagon through the town square to a building ahead. Hanging above the front door of this modest trading post is a sign shaped like a wooden shield with a blue lion painted on it. You enter, and a human woman perks up and says, Welcome to Lionshield Coster, I'm Linene, I was about to close up, and my inventory is low, but I can spare a few minutes.
Yes hello unfortunately Gundren was captured we were hired to escort the supplies and we are just parking the cart for the night and plan on finishing up our business in the morning, we work as a group and it was quite a tough ordeal to keep the goods safe. Until then I would like to purchase some supplies.
I would like to trade this Scimatar for a Rapier and this is a fine scimatar used to help Kill Klarg of Cragmaw please let me know how much store credit I can get afterwards or the price difference.
Fjolnir walks with Hymir up to Barthen's Provisions, spits and blows his nose along the dirt before walking on the deck and kicking mud off his boots on the deckposts, and enters the establishment.
"Oh aye Sir. We got waylaid on the road and set upon by goblins. Nasty shits. We need to head back out after a rest to try to help Gundren, as the tall feller here said. Do ya have any medium armor available? And can you tell us about the Lionshield Coster?"
Garaele relaxes once she sees your demeanor is kind, and you notice now that she too has recently been battered. She has bruises on her arms and tears on her clothing. Of course! All are welcome to pray here, and while the temple... shrine is dedicated to Tymora, some say any place of worship is a closer place to any god.
Hymir and Fjolnir:
He intently listens to both of you before saying, Captured! Oh, no! Goblins! Oh my, thank you so much for getting my supplies here safely. Oh, this is a lot to take in, give me a second. He sits down and starts fanning himself as the two young men come to his aid, which he waves off and tells to go back to work. I'm fine, I'm fine. Now then, where was I? Oh, right. I'm Elmar Barthen, I own this little place, but unfortunately, I don't deal in weapons or armor, for that you'll have to go to the Lionshield Coster. Linene Lionshield runs it. She's a bit sharp of tongue but nice enough, so long as you're not too sensitive. Where are the rest of your group? Gundren said there'd be five... Well, if you go get my wagon and bring it around back, I'll stick around long enough to pay you the agreed upon amount of 10 Gold apiece.
Oh, it is very upsetting news about Gundren. He is a dear friend of mine. I do hope he's alright, and that you'll be able to rescue him as you say. I'm excited for him to reopen the lost mine! Did you hear he and his brother's found the mine from the Phandelver Pact? That's going to bring through so much business! Maybe with more people coming through here, those damn Redbrands won't have such a tight hold on this place.
His brothers, Tharden and Nundro are camping just outside of town. I expect them back any day to resupply, haven't seen them in a tenday. I think they're waiting on Gundren too, so if I see them I'll inform them of the sad news and send them to you. Will you be staying at the Stonehill Inn?

"Hello, I have something in my cart that may belong to you. The sigil on the crates match your shop banner. The goblins that had it were not thrilled with parting with them but my friends and I were... very convincing."
Also I'm in the market for hide armor and would lije to find out is she has some for sale.
Since I'm not needed elsewhere, and I can't think of a damn thing else to do. I chat up the locals about rumors, problems (whatever) and of course, attempt to ingratiate myself with either an affluent lady... or one with loose morals. I would also like to attempt to perform for money. Sing a song of our exploits thus far, for a ripe price.
alright (I look at Fjolnir and wait for him to conclude his business)
well the cart is actually headed to the Lionshield now to drop off some other supplies that we found on the way so i think me and my friend will be headed there now to grab some weapons and return your cart. we will be back soon and we will be staying the night in town, so if you need us we will be sure to check in with you in the morning.
(I make a point to not tell him the Inn we are staying at, something about his story upsets me like the amount of detail he knows and the other people waiting on the outskirts of town for Gundren as well as his knowledge of the forge when we weren't even told that until later)
i would also like to make an insight roll on him to confirm my suspicions and any other roll to figure information out
Linene's Expression goes from boredom and lethargy to exasperated delight. You found my supplies! She runs past you and darts out the door to look into the wagon and runs back in. I thought they were lost for good! I knew bandits or something but wasn't sure it was goblins. You and your friends you say? Where are they? I had a reward up for anyone who found them, how does 50 gold sound? It's yours! You can split it with your group. Hide armor? Yes I have some, hold on. She disappears into the back for a minute and comes back with a set of hide armor. I'll tell you what, on top of the 50 gold for your group, I'll let you buy this armor at cost. Anything your friends want, too, I'll let them buy one thing at cost. You helped me out greatly, so I'll help you. Her demeanor shifts again to more angry, not directed at you, but you can tell this subject pisses her off. As long as you don't mingle with those ******* Redbrands, I'll sell to you. Do yourself a favor, unless you're looking for a fight, avoid the Sleeping Giant tap house on the East side of town. Those ****-sticks hang out there exclusively, and our current *****-assed Townmaster ain't doin' shit about them squeezing the businesses here. ******* bullshit! I don't sell to those muther-****ers. I tell them get the **** right back outta my store! Oh, sorry I just get a little... excited sometimes. Sorry about that. Thanks again for finding my supplies, and make sure you send your friends in, and share that shit with them. If they come in here I'm going to ask if you did! Ha ha!
(Add 50 gold to your sheet until you hand out everyone's share to them. Add hide armor, but your cost for it is 5 gold instead of 10. Also, she will buy your old armor off of you at half price, which for leather is 5 gold, so that's an even trade!)
Hymir:
You remember Sildar mentioning Nundro and Tharden, they are Gundren's brothers, probably not too weird that they are waiting for his return. Upon further thought, you don't think it's too odd that Elmar knows about the mine (he didn't mention the forge specifically, just the mine, but I guess they are one and the same) because if he deals directly with Gundren, contracted to pay you for bringing his supplies down, and those supplies are related to mining, he's probably part of Gundren's deal. Sildar knew about the mine, and the only reason you didn't is because Gundren was in a hurry and said he'd fill you in later, so it's not really a secret. Your insight check doesn't give you any... insight, you have no choice but to take what he says at face value and put the pieces together in your head.
Dirk:
A quick scan of the Inn's tavern (no roll required) and you can see all the patrons. It's a small establishment, and Toblen, who you heard Sildar call the barkeep, owns the place. Going around and introducing yourself to all of them, you gain the following information: (For brevity, I'll skip actually introducing yourself to all of them)
Sitting at the table closest to the bar are Trilena, Toblen’s wife, and Pip, Toblen’s young son. Trilena tells you, “You're new here? Be careful, stranger, we've got problems, namely the Redbrands.Thel Dendrar, a local woodcarver, stood up to the Redbrands a tenday ago when they came by his shop and leered at his wife. The ruffians murdered him. Several townsfolk saw it happen. The Redbrands grabbed his body, and now his wife, daughter, and son have gone missing too.”
Pip says, “Qelline Alderleaf’s son Carp said he found a secret tunnel in the woods, but Redbrands almost caught him.”
Narth, an old farmer states, “Sister Garaele, who oversees the Shrine of Luck, recently left town for a few days, then returned wounded and exhausted. She hasn't really told anyone what happened.” You know that Absinthe was headed there.
Elsa, a gossipy barmaid casually mentions, “Daran Edermath, the orchard keeper, is a former adventurer. His farm is out on the Northwest part of town, and he might help you out.”
Lanar, a miner says, “Orc raiders have been seen on the east end of Triboar Trail. The townmaster is looking for someone to run them off. He has a bounty poster up at the Townmaster's Hall.”
Freda, a weaver, lets you know, “The Redbrands hassle every business in town, except for the Phandalin Miner’s Exchange. They don’t want trouble with Halia Thornton, who runs it. She must be pretty tough, or something.”
You may converse with (or not) any of those people further if you'd like.
Upon petitioning Toblen to let you play for him for money, he says, I've hired traveling bards before, and I see no harm in it, we could use a little life in here, but as far as price goes, how about we see what you got before I pay you? I'm not going to give you a ton of gold if you drive out my customers, know what I mean? He gives you a smile.
(You can either try to roll Persuasion to agree on a price before you play, or you can roll Performance and get paid depending on how well you do)
Hymir and Fjolnir go to the Lionshield to grab the cart and take it back to Barthen
If there is time we want to sell all the spare armor and weapons that were on the cart put that gold in the Party Fund and buy the weapons and armor we asked about
if there is not time we will grab the cart return it and go in the morning to sell the items and buy what we want.
Put your spoiler here. "Your terms are fair and accepted" (gives a shallow bow that's more of a head nod with hip accentuation) "I am Az Emberi, I will send my friends along in the morning, but perhaps you can tell me more about these Redbrands as we unload your supplies from the cart. The cart itself and the other provisions on it are promised elsewhere."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Your terms are reasonable sir" 18 "From all walks of life, five strangers unite. On a simple quest, things did turn unrest. Goblins assailed us with their whims, In response I left them sans limbs. Though my party was scared and ready to run, I assured them that vengeance could be done. Our dog did sniff the way to the den, leading us to a cave, danger within. Within we found troubles a plenty, but you'll always find Dirk at the ready. Krag and Yeezy snarled with fury, both towering trolls far from beauty. Fjolnir the victor, fought with strength of liquor. Though he slayed many, he could not identify any. My gentle giant both simple and strong got stuck in a corner for all too long. My human friend Hymir, great wizard in his right, did cantrip his way out of the fight. Though Krag and Yeezy were far from easy, I bested those beasties and left them in pieces. Never again will they assault a caravan! " After the song I speak with Pip asking where I can find Carp, something we may want to look into.
Hymir and Fjolnir head down the road toward the Lionshield Coster, and on the way you pass Absinthe and a priestly woman at the shrine, but they are conversing, or praying maybe, you're not sure so you just give a nod and continue, making sure he knows where you're heading.
You enter the place in time to hear the owner, say. "Pleasure to meet you Az Emberi, about those ******* Redbrands, oh, are these your friends? Hi, I'm Linene, Az Emberi has some gold for you, and if you'd like, you can buy something here at half cost, so long as you promise not to give it to a Redbrand! They've been pretty much given free rein by the Townmaster to do whatever they want for the last couple months, if for no other reason than he's too much of a ***** to stop them! They hang out at the Sleeping Giant, and they won't think twice to **** you up, because they think they're above the law. I won't supply them with weapons, but it's only a matter of time before they get brave with me."
Dirk puts on a great performance, one of the best that he can remember. The tune is catchy, the words are powerful, and before long he's got everyone cheering and dancing. (Inspiration if you come up with lyrics) Whether or not they believe all of it is unknown, but some of the phrases stick in the heads of some of them, and you know you did well. Toblen smiles and nods at you, and waves you over once you're done. "Pretty good, friend, pretty good! I'll tell you what, if you keep that up, and perform any night you're in town, I'll give you a room, food, plus 3 gold a night. What do you say? He slides 3 gold across the table.
Pip says, "Carp Alderleaf? He lives at the Alderleaf farm."
"Sounds like a deal, but let's put out a tip jar for me. After all I'm not just an entertainer, I'm a skilled warrior.... folk hero and inevitable legend."

shop keep convo part 2
Put your spoiler here. "Your terms are fair and accepted" (gives a shallow bow that's more of a head nod with hip accentuation) "I am Az Emberi, I will send my friends along in the morning, but perhaps you can tell me more about these Redbrands as we unload your supplies from the cart. The cart itself and the other provisions on it are promised elsewhere."
