Adventure Hook:
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days’ travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found “something big,” and that he’d pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen’s Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to “take care of business.”
You’ve spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you’ve just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You’ve encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.
Orro cuts a bit of a striking figure -- a dwarf with a shock of a long, straight, and silky white beard covers to lower half of his face, while his dark brown head is bald. He often grumbles to himself. You get the sense that he hasn't spent much time with other people recently, and when he has, they haven't really understood him very well.
He's taken his turn cooking simple meals (when reminded), and he's happy to drive the cart, or if someone else wants to, he will walk next to it, offering mostly-understood-but-sort-of-mumbled observations about what's up the road ahead. His eyes dart about, asking questions of the world, but silently. Otherwise, he's not made a ton of conversation, and you can tell he likes to tinker with metal. He pulls out little things he must have crafted a long time ago, fixing them and winding them up to spin or roll about. Some seem dangerous, or at least not toys for a child.
He's humming a bit to himself as the cart moves along.
Kayassa looks like a girl that is in her late teens to early twenties her with wild and curly brown hair. While they are seemingly decorative if seen from far away she has curled horns that sprout from her head and goat like legs. Her eyes are much more normal except that one is blue and the other is green. She wears simple studded leather armor with a long shift underneath that goes to mid thigh.
Currently she is riding in the wagon, messing about with a set of bagpipes, having been playing them on and off for the last several hours. The music seems to be a wild mixture of actual effort and then just trying to get the old thing to work. If anyone takes the time to watch she occasionally seems to be arguing with someone that is not there. If asked she explains it is her patron and master.
Ryzen is an imposing figure. Standing at 6'2", he is well built and toned. His fair skin has a light tan from working outside. While he looks to be around his mid-twenties, his short and thick, dark brown hair is beginning gray at the temples. A couple weeks of dark stubble covers his strong jaw. His blue eyes take in all the details of his surroundings. His clothing consists of a simple green shirt with some simple pants. While rather simple looking, he is carrying several dwarven weapons strapped to his back and sides. The one he uses most is a heavy, iron maul.
He usually stays about 60 feet behind the wagon to cover the rear of the group, or is is 60 ahead to scout out the trail. The horses seem skittish around him, so he keeps his distance for the most part. He he talks, it is in a deep, rough voice with a faint accent. Everyone once in a while, he seems to talk to himself quietly, but he doesn't notice you noticing him.
-Jasper wore simple leather armor and street clothes, and most noticeably, a 'cowboy' hat..all of which was black or grey, tattered slightly of use, a two daggers, a rapier and a shortbow rested rather peacefully on him, despite them not fitting the look. his hair a deep red and his skin a tan, sporting a frost blue pair of eyes, despite being a half elf, and his voice young but shown a soft, slow 'country accent'...he carried himself with an almost cartoonish spring in his step most of the travel, usually scouting ahead or behind the cart, rotating with Ryzen's posts..and when given the chance, asking each party member of their past, or of how the travel suited them..taking his time to place joking remarks of flattery with each-
-currently, the Rogue placed himself in the wagon, idly widdling at a piece of wood with his dagger, his seemingly constant smile rest at a smirk, a bell at his side, and and he, himself, leaned casually against the back of the drivers seat, giving a sigh and muttering,"Lightening never strikes twice..." wistfully in elvish, almost as if he was addressing the rest of the party-
Like Ryzen, Thrax seems to tower over everyone else on this security detail - he may have Ryzen by an inch or two. Lean and conspicuously built for battle, it was no surprise when Thrax revealed to anyone who asked that he was a soldier. He wears no military insignia, but his bearing and mannerisms - if not his javelins, longsword, flail, and chainmail armor - give him away. Not one for idle chit-cha, he's spent most of this trek taking his shifts scouting ahead, alone, or taking up the rear, alone. He keeps himself covered most of the time with his maroon cloak, though it's hard not to notice that he's devoid of any facial hair, and his scalp is shaved clean. The bronze-toned skin of his face is flawless, which seems odd for one who's seen his share of battles...
One of his traveling companions did catch his attention, though not for the obvious reasons. While catching up to the wagon during a shift change, he overheard Kayassa talking to, he assumed, whomever was driving the cart. As he got within sight of where she was sitting, he saw that she was having a heated debate with... the air? Kayassa caught him staring at the 'exchange', and he gave a curt nod and quickly moved ahead.
Thrax is currently walking beside the animal(s) pulling the wagon.
Ryzen, who is ahead of the group, lags behind to allow the rest the group to catch up. He gives the horses a wide berth as comes to the cart. To no one in particular, he asks, "Any one know how much farther it is to Phandalin?" He rolls his shoulders and stretches while he asked the question.
"I am not a loner. I was just trying to fix my bagpipes.... They were damaged when I tripped coming through a portal... The animals on this plane are very rude..."She says going on a rant about how she had tripped over some furry creature upon arrival. As Ryzen spoke she turned to him. "I think it is only a few more hours?"
You continue to travel down the Triboar-Trail for about another hour or two. As the party comes around a bend in the road, you spot two dead horses sprawled about 50 feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each had several black feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embarkment and dense thickets on either sides.
Kayassa pops her head out to look around,as they come upon the strange sight, setting the bagpipes down. She reaches for what looks to be a walking stick that is gnarled with single Jade green orb that is held in place by thorn covered vines.

Ryzen pulls his maul off of his back. He scans the trail behind the group just in case the horses are a distraction for an ambush. He says to the group, "If there are bandits about, I think they might target the oxen first. It seems like the logical choice. If we don't have oxen, we won't go anywhere."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
At this point, the cart is about 30 feet away from the horse as the oxen pulling it slow to a stop.
Stealth: 26
Thrax:
As you survey the surrounding woods, you can just make out what seems to be two humanoid figures on either side of the path. They seem to be armed and also seem to be waiting for the party to walk closer.
Orro pulls the oxen to a stop with a gentle but firm tug of the reins. Seeing the arrows, and the dead horses, his guard is up. "Ambush, or forgotten casualties?"he mutters to himself. He looks through the trees to either side of the road, curious if he sees sign of movement, or tracks. He also looks at the horses ahead, trying to get a sense as to their previous life. Are they saddled, or bareback, or fitted out to pull a cart that's not there?
He steps down off the cart, to the side, and touches Jasper's shoulder, whispering, "we can all use someguidancenow and again."(d4 to an ability check in the next minute)
A bit of sparkling light pulses along his right fist as he raises it, shielding his eyes as he peers to the sides and ahead, preparing to cast sacred flame on anything that seems unfriendly.
Kayassa climbs out of the wagon, her staff raised as she mutter something and a small bit of energy begins to form on her free hand. "Is something about to attack us? I haven't fought anything on this plane yet..."

Seeing the party preparing to attack, the creatures rush out of the woods, drawing their weapons. You watch as four goblins reveal themselves, holding menacing scimitars. There are two on either side of the path, standing about 30 feet away; next to the dead horses.
Goblin Initiative: 15
I would like everyone to roll initiative!
As a note, for initiative, we will be using what I believe to be called block initiative. Basically, groups of PCs that have initiatives on either side of the goblins may act out of order to make things smoother.
Ex: If Orro and Jasper had initiatives 18 and 14 respectively, while the Goblins had an initiative of 10, Both could act in either order, so I can update things quicker and make combat smoother. Same goes for everyone else on the other side of initiative. Let’s say Ryzen, Kayassa, and Thrax all had initiatives lower than 10, they have to wait for the goblins to act, but then could go in any order.
Let me know if that doesn’t make sense, because I know I explained it pretty poorly.
