Can confirm: fighter doesn't do a single damn thing paladin can't easily do better. Even the supposed 'Supahnova' potential of Action Surge is equivalent at best to a round of Divine Smite-boosted normal attacks, and the dingdong can use its Smite fuel on spellcasting if it wants to. The fighter can do no such thing. Second Wind lets the fighter gain a minor self-heal; Lay on Hands is a major source of partywide healing. Indomitable allows the fighter to reroll one failed save once per day save at high levels; Aura of Protection superboosts every single saving throw the dingdong and anyone near them makes.
In R5e, dingdongs are head and shoulders above any other martial class, period.
One of the first threads I got involved with here was another old school gamer who was asking how to ramp up fighters to make them more equal.
we were informed that fighters were just fine, stop whining.
Fighters are the most maligned class — and then everyone wants magic, because they aren’t all that good.
i gave them sword skills and a basic resistance to magic.
still looking forward to what they do. New mechanics can be useful..l

Pure mechanics are one thing but in gaming terms Paladins are sworn to do all sorts of things and anyone playing them as a straightforward "better fighter build" is not really really getting into the spirit of it. Ok, they don't need to be Lawful Good anymore (in 5E they have rolled the Paladin/Anti-Paladin thing into one class) but whatever, they need to "Take their work seriously" and that in itself provides significant balance.

But you get to self-define what "work" means to the character. Hence why the Oath of Kicking Ass & Chewing Bubblegum is the most popular subclass for paladins.

Dingdongs are heavily regulated by their oath and are vulnerable to anti-magic effects. Sure, most of the time none of that matters, but a fighter with a good feat selection can keep up most of the time, and a ton of people prefer the "plausibly ordinary" class theme to any of the other 4 martial classes.

Really? I've played both and found that Fighters had a lot of cool things going for them too that Paladin doesn't. Even Champion Fighter still has cool crit mechanics, and Fighter is able to do a lot of damage, tank, attack lots of times than Paladin, get higher ability scores and more feats than Paladin, get cool fighting styles, heal themselves some, reroll failed saves when the Paladin just has roll with the dice, and take multiple actions in one turn when the Paladin always only ever gets one.
So this "confirmation" is very much inaccurate; Again, I have played both of these classes and found that they both match up pretty well. These two classes may appeal to slightly different play styles, since the base class mechanics for Paladin are more complex than the base chassis of Fighter. However, the game is made up of both simple and complex options, and there is nothing wrong with someone enjoying a different type of character.
All in al, Fighters are a great class, though it would be nice if they got a couple new mechanics that let them do more outside of combat.

I've got a lot of concerns and issues with how things are going with 1DD, but right now, as more information has come out, my biggest and most overriding issue by far is that it seems increasingly focused on microtransations and pushing the virtual tabletop. Not just providing it as an option or something like R20, but outright forcing their own service which will be full of microtransactions and whatnot.

I'm with Mr. Duckworth. Please link where WotC said they are no longer publishing or allowing physical books for D&D, and the only legal D&D will be on the WotC VTT. The statement "outright forcing their own service which will be full of microtransactions and whatnot" needs supporting evidence.

Comments like the undermonitization of the current playerbase and the like.
With the VTT the fact is they don't need to do a lot on the programming end. If they simply wished to provide a service something like what R20 offers would not only be cheaper but more ideal since it would allow for large amounts of homebrew content to be easily utilized. However, they haven't done that and have, instead, invested in a much more expensive process than what would be needed.
What I suspect we'll see is a heavy push towards VTT content with an emphasis on microtransaction and skin/cosmetic purchases. They likely won't be able to shut down the in-person books completely, but don't be surprised at them not only attempting to heavily push the VTT but finding a bunch of ways to monitize it if not outright find some way to effectively require it (or at least make it far more optimal). They've gone on-record already saying they want to increase profits and have hired people like ex-Zynga (or however that company's name is spelled) employees. The logic seems obvious to me. Build a VTT designed to exploit whales and expand their whale-net from being just the GM's to potentially any and all players. As for how they plan to do this, while you are right in that they likely won't stop printing books (at least for the immediate future), I also won't be surprised to see books coming with one-time only redeemable codes for special VTT-exclusive bonuses and online-only adventures and other content that get no physical book release. That would allow them to push people increasingly into the VTT space (especially if 1DD becomes exclusive to their own VTT and sites like R20 get banned from using it) and if your special Cleric: Domain of the Profit subclass is online-only then you'd be adverse to playing IRL since, at the least, it would likely require additional hoops to jump through instead of a single book that could be shared among all players at the table with ease.

hello. Requesting what is meant by:
what information has come out regarding 1DD as part of a VTT
where you get the information that it is “increasing” in relation to micro transactions
Where you get “pushing” from
Where you get the notion “not as an option”
What you mean by forced, and where that comes from.
note, please, that speculation about these things is entirely deceptive, decietful, and dishonest, regardless of the people saying them, unless it comes from a current, active employee working on that team (in which case it is not speculative).
so if your sources are not that, then I ask that you respond with “just speculation without evidence”.
because while I am deeply disliking all VTTs in general since they inherently force uniformity of systems and gut the very first rule of the game, which gives flexibility to DMs to alter everything, I dislike people talking out of their hind ends even more with the purpose of defaming others.

You make it sound like this sort of thing is crazy talk and we haven't seen countless fiascos like Diablo Immortal where devs outright designed products for the sole purpose of exploiting cash while, also, at least technically having such transactions be '100% optional'. They want to increase their profit margins by a massive amount (I believe the exact word was 'double') and have talked about how under-monitized the userbase is. If this isn't sending up red blaring warning lights then I suspect you'd also consider Godzilla rampaging through your back yard a 'minor disturbance'.

To me, a lot of that is on DM's. Way too many DM's I have known seem to feel skills to be some sort of 'cheat.' Yes, there should be and are limits to what can be accomplished but too many set those limits way lower than is even normal IRL.
Ya I should say in general I hope One DnD has more tips and help for GM's in general and could go a long way to alleviating some of those pains.
Ah, so, yeah, just idle speculation without evidence.
cool, cool, carry on, carry on.
Is the past decade of gaming industry not evidence enough? And the people who came to handle DnD are, in fact, from videogame industry. Which means the same approach, same practices.
You do know there are many video games out there without microtransactions, right? Nor every computer game is a browser game and not all browser games are equally bad.
WotC's main product is still Magic the Gathering, which has been all about microtransactions from before computer games were doing that kind of thing.
It's like saying that ethnic purges are not so bad, because you're not in the target demographic. Yet.
DnD is undermonetized. And something has to be done about it.
