What would be most beneficial, methinks, is a "PHB5.5e" book that is cited as optional for players who are looking for more advanced and updated creation options and DMs who are ready to allow their players a bit more freedom than the base 5e game allows (which is to say none at all). Something to the effect of "this book replaces the normal 5e PHB for players and Dungeon Masters who are looking for more flexibility and depth than the default game provides, but you don't need the information in this book to play D&D."
We won't get it, but a 'PHB Next' of sorts for people who are ready for some gameplay in their D&D games would be nice, wouldn't it?

Almost like and Advanced Dungeons and Dragons PHB?
Why not? There's clearly pull for it. Look at how divisive the psionics thing has been - there's a quiet majority of people who just want the game to be as simple, easy, smooth, dumbed-down, uncomplicated, shallow, and every other word for "Minimal Cognitive Load" you can come up with...and a sizable, highly vocal minority that is absolutely desperate for some bloody DEPTH in our tabletop games.
Why not have a concurrent 'Advanced' book for the people who want more that what 5e is giving them? So long as it remains compatible with all the ancillary content and adventure books and junk, is there any reason beyond development overhead not to have a Slow Lane and a Fast Lane, so to speak?

TSR supported both D&D and AD&D concurrently for over a decade.

Doing this as an advanced would be quite easy with the racial options that WotC has been hinting at on moving racial ability modifiers, Then add in those Class Feature Options and then the new Summoning Spells Then throw in Subclasses for everyone as well as a full reprint of the Artificer with Armorer. Then put all the Vehicle rules from Ghosts of Saltmarsh, the Flying ships from Acquisitions Inc and Land Vehicles from Averness. Then put in the full sidekick rules for Hirelings & Henchmen and a few little other things and you got a fairly full book for folks to buy just before Christmas (I get stuff hehehe).

This is a good idea in my opinion. I would buy this so fast.

ALL of it.
Most importantly the UA Class features variants, but anything that adds options is good.
"Normality is but an Illusion, Whats normal to the Spider, is only madness for the Fly"
Kain de Frostberg- Dark Knight - (Vengeance Pal3/ Hexblade 9), Port Mourn
Kain de Draakberg-Dark Knight lvl8-Avergreen(DitA)
