This suggests that the book this will be published in is far off. An early playtest. That means more is coming.
Remember when WotC mentioned that they're going to put Vistani in 2 upcoming books. With the Spirits Bards, whatever book this goes in will definitely be one of the Vistani featuring books.
Maybe these UA will not make their way into Xanathar's 2.0? They could be playtests for a Ravenloft or Innistrad setting. It could explain why there are only 2 subclasses in this UA, as Setting books typically only have 2-3 subclasses in them. Both M:tG settings only had two subclasses. To me, this points to Innistrad.
Anyone else had similar thoughts?
Or, I could just be reading too much into it.
I think you’re probably right.
I hope that it is a full Ravenloft setting book and not another M:tG setting.

I want that too, but this feels more like Innistrad to me.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Other recent subclasses like Path of the Beast, Way of Mercy and Phantom look like they could also be possibilities that fit well in such a setting.
They have similar themes, but I don't know how connected they are to each other. These new subclasses don't seem planescape-y, and the older ones certainly seem that way (Path of Beast for Beastlands, Way of Mercy for Positive and Negative Energy Planes, Phantom for Shadowfell).
These new 2 subclasses seem like Ravenloft or Innistrad.

I’m not so sure about that. I think they could be related. But I guess we’ll see. 🤷♂️
Wow. I just saw this UA, and was very surprised. I think that Wizards is trying to fix the Undying Warlock, and this may have been an overcompensation. It is flavourful and seems like it would be fun to play, but the 8d10 eldritch blast has to be a mistake. If it isn't, time to break out some Illusionist's Bracers and go to town.

The bard subclass is awesome but the warlock while having cool flavor is kinda bland in abilities in terms of this new UA. I really do think the new bard subclass should be added as official content.

8d10+8d6+20 necrotic damage with Hex, Agonizing Blast and a 20 in Charisma. With a bonus action as well, that's 16d10+16d6+40 damage. On average, 184 damage. At most, with no critical hits, 296 necrotic damage. With critical hits on all, average damage is 328 necrotic damage. With critical hits on all, maximum damage is 552 necrotic damage.
Insanely broken. You can also combine this with other magic items for an even higher damage total (imbued focuses from E:RftLW, staff of the ivory claw from EGtW).

Yes, very broken. Just a damage type swap would be thematic but not OP. or maybe change it to a Vampiric Touch type effect once on your turn. Just spit balling here.

They have a vampiric touch thing as the capstone for the subclass. The damage swap is not OP, necrotic damage is worse than force. I think an extra damage dice once a turn would be better.

Once per turn would also match abilities of other classes that deal extra damage. That seems fair.
The subclasses seem powerful. Of course, based on the disclaimer, it's likely they're trying to nail down the flavor of the abilities before tweaking for balance.
Does anyone else think it's weird that the warlock gets Speak With Dead even though that's an at-will invocation? Am I missing something? At best, that spell would be useful for levels 5-8 before that invocation is available, which I guess might make it worth it....

Once a turn, or you can use the full version CHA mod/long rest. Still allow the player to change the damage to necrotic, but not completely double it every round.

I think you're all interpreting the feature wrong. "While you are using your Form of Dread, you can roll one additional damage die when determining the necrotic damage the target takes." It sounds like it's just adding ONE extra die, not one for every die you roll. So it'd be 5d10 necrotic damage at a 17th level eldritch blast, not 8d10.

I get the feeling we can expect a new M:tG setting once a year, or at least once every two years from now on.

This makes me believe that Ravenloft setting is also more likely.

(Also no-one seemed to like my present perfect / present continuous joke about the names. Sadface.)
I don’t think anyone even noticed. We’re not in the Cult of SPG.
I do agree about the other recent subclasses though.
