That and the Gold Dragon are so awesome, long slender wyrms.
I also love the chonky White Dragon.
I know, they’re so darn cool. The green dragon swimming alongside the boat is my favorite, it’s AMAZING.
what I’m personally most excited for though is the new hag art. Especially the Archhag. I desperately need to know what CR the Archhag is.
Saw some of the art and it was decent. Personally I do like what I saw of the 5.5 MM's art compared to the 5.5 PHB's. (IMO a lot of the PCs depicted in the PHB just looked... off.) Gonna steal some of it for tokens to use on battlemaps most likely. It was nice seeing things in action for them.
For the Archag, let's guess... CR 0 because the fey are so chaotic that an Arch-Fey is actually the lowest. ^.^
Will be interested to compare and contrast the Tarrasque stat blocks since IIRC they beefed it up.
Overall there's some philosophy changes I'm not the biggest fan of (like removing werewolves' immunity to non-magic/silver weapons) but also some things I'm looking forward to. For example the bugbear warrior is a creature I'll probably use at some point. Plus some of the newer caster monsters. (On the flip side I prefer the mage to the mage.) Will also have to take looks at their bloodied status stuff for inspiration on homebrewing monsters.
Gonna be interesting once the Free Rules monsters are available.

Yeah, they supposedly have The Tarrasque some ranged abilities, you know, just for funsies.
I just finished up watching the big video they put out about the monster manual. They made one tiny yet such a big change to hags. I feel conflicted.

Talking about adding male hags?
Definitely seems weird and could lose their unique reproduction methods.
Plus someone the ways of role-playing hags that feel delightfully creepy kinda feel pervy if genderswapped. (Just my humble opinion.)

Yeah.
i don’t think they’d get rid of something like that, at least not entirely. We’ll have to see, although there’s a chance they might just not mention it. I’ll be keeping my hags the way I like it personally, which is more akin to the 2014 version. It just feels weird to me. Although I have no issue with them adding male Dryads and separating Incubus and Succubus (since they are still functionally the same creature, it’s just that the two forms serve different purposes for the fiend.) also I heard apparently in the comments someone complained about female satyrs, although since their introduction into 5e they’ve been both male and female. Odd.
I am still quite excited for the Archhag, however. And I’m actually already creating characters for some of the monsters they’ve already announced. Great Gran Ironteeth for the Archhag, as well as a green dragon which I’m currently calling the lord of Sweet Nothings.
If Great Gran Ironteeth doesn't have dentures of sharpened steel we riot.
Oh, it’s more than that. Her dentures are magical, they fly, and they bite.
anyways, what do you think of what they’ve shown of the monster manual so far?
Like I said, haven't delved too much into it. But I'm cautiously optimistic.
Things I'm looking forward to: Art (gonna steal some for battlemap tokens). I liked some of the examples shown in the video. Seeing examples of how they use Bloodied. Taking a look at some of their scaled stat blocks. (The Death Knight example they talked about in the video should be an interesting case study.) Taking a look at new creatures.
Things I'm not looking forward to: Continued loss of lore. (I know there's an argument to be made to save it for setting books, but WotC hasn't exactly delivered greatly there and reading the lore in the 5.0 MM is a delight.) Loss of some of the various immunities. (Such as werewolves not being immune to non-magic/silver weapons.) Multiverse-style spellcasters. (I really prefer the large spell list and slots. Looking at the mage is just so less inspiring than the mage to me. I even plan on including an eldritch lich as an NPC in a campaign with friends. Chose it initially for the CR and weirdness but after double-checking its stat block was kinda glad I didn't choose it as something intended for them to be fighting, it's more just one of various political figures, since its style of actions isn't as intriguing to me as that of a lich.)
Things I'm neutral on: Reaction-style legendary monsters. I'll be curious to see how they implement those. Creature type changes of monsters. I kinda really like shifting gnolls from humanoid to fiend. But I'm also not sure how I feel about other things like shifting goblins from humanoid to fey.

Yes, the art is absolutely heavenly. Personally I’m a bit sad about the werewolf immunities as well, but that’ll make it match with Wereravens and Loup Garous at least. And the new mage, from what I remember, is a bit disappointing, if not beginner friendly. I know the Eldritch Lich Statblock well (my forum character, the Red Baron, uses it) and I know it’s a bit disappointing in combat, although it does pack quite the punch.
I’m actually switched with you when it comes to Goblins and Gnolls. Goblins deserve to be fey, although they deserve to be more special because of it, I think. In the games I’ve run, goblins have always been fey but I use them like I use fey, they’re a lot different than how most use goblins. I use Kobolds and Orcs for that. Meanwhile with Gnolls, I’m not too sure about it. I mean, it makes sense, but I personally enjoyed when just the Gnoll Flind was a fiend, as it shows how blessed they are by their demon lord.

How dare you disagree with me on gnolls and goblins! *pitchforks raised*
;p
Though I get where you're coming from. Haven't really used gnolls myself yet, just know stuff about their lore and want to use them. Kinda also have an idea where you have civilized gnolls, possibly talking with Bri'ish accents, all posh because of a control ritual done by a wizard. And if the players kill the wizard suddenly they have a countywide bloodbath to deal with.
Curious about how you use goblins though. I assume by different from most people they're not just greedy little [censored]s to deal with. Guessing more of the tricksty sort?

Sort of, yeah. Although being quite honest I don’t even use Goblins that much to begin with. They’re also in my favorite setting, the Ebon Tides, as shadow goblins.
oh, another thing, while it wasn’t confirmed, I believe they changed Unicorns from Celestials to Fey.
Also, curious for thoughts on some statblocks I'm trying to make. Been thinking of the idea of formation-fighting in DnD for a little while and possible ideas on how it might work. At some point probably making stat blocks to be used as the common soldiers of some empires. But will probably try to think of a one-shot first, in which case the idea of the Tercio came to mind.
Quick historical note: The Tercio was a fighting formation during the Renaissance. Essentially you'd have pikes protect guns. The pikes could stop a cavalry charge or other adversaries getting close while the guns did their job. Part of the Renaissance rock-paper-scissors of pikeman > cavalry, musket > pikeman, cavalry > musket.
So went with three statblocks. One for a pikeman, simple fodder meant to shield the muskets. The musket, meant to be weaker but also decent ranged damage. And a captain to bolster the resolve of those under him and make them stronger, kinda to compensate for a tercio being a juicy fireball target. The pike and musket I calculated as CR 2 within a formation and the captain CR 3. But then the captain and musket being CR 2 outside a formation with the pike being CR 1/2.
(Might have to try a lancer statblock at some point or do more looking through to find something I really like. Something like a centaur is probably a good candidate for reskinning or such.)
Obviously it's kinda hard to simulate all the real-world stuff in DnD so some of the things are kinda off. Like how the advantage of mass fire with muskets gets clumsy if you truly need a ton of them so I went his higher accuracy despite the inaccuracy of IRL early firearms. And such.
speaking of the hourglass widow reminds me, do you have the time/ and are interested in possibly having ✨a fight?✨
Depends. Possibly.
Ooh, alright. I’d really like to test out the new ancient green dragon, which is currently the only public dragon statblock. Possibly against a party of characters.

What level of party? Need to see if any of my ready-to-go characters feel right. Feel like the dwarves are probably good choices for the poison resistance.

And such.

Ooh, alright. I’d really like to test out the new ancient green dragon, which is currently the only public dragon statblock. Possibly against a party of characters.
in a lake.
Wow... only now did I realize I did 1d6 for a rapier. At least I got it right in the averages...

What level of party? Need to see if any of my ready-to-go characters feel right. Feel like the dwarves are probably good choices for the poison resistance.
