Community Spotlight: 10 Homebrew Magic Items We Love

Plate armor made of tableware. A mask carved from a hag's face. These are the kinds of homebrew magic items that inspire characters all on their own, and they were made by D&D Beyond users. In this community spotlight, we're highlighting magic items that will have you begging your Dungeon Master to add them to your home game — or that at least give you a chuckle or a touch of inspiration.

1. Technically 'plate' armor

Armor (plate), uncommon

Who needs to spend 1,500 gold on plate armor when you can don your finest wares? Technically "plate" armor is what happens when your fighter is cash-strapped and will do anything to get some decent Armor Class. This suit of magic armor gives you a whopping 20 AC. But each time you take damage, its effectiveness decreases. Take enough hits and the technically "plate" armor will shatter, dealing a small amount of piercing damage to you.

Luckily, once combat ends, you can tearfully pick up the pieces of your armor and have the party spellcaster cast mending to put it back together for you.

2. Dryad's gift

Weapon (longbow), rare (requires attunement)

Elf with longbowDryads are fey creatures who protect the woodlands to which they are bound. Often, you'll find them picking fights with commoners donning their best flannel and axe. But if you can convince a dryad you mean well and definitely didn't trample over that bed of flowers back there, they could come to befriend you, and might even offer you a birthday present. Dryad's gift is one example of what you could receive.

This magic weapon serves as a +1 longbow but comes packed with flavorful abilities. As long as you are near trees, you'll never want for arrows. Tree branches will morph into arrows for your use. The bow also protects you from harmful odors and makes it harder to track you. You can even pass along messages to those in the same forest as you. Not a bad tradeoff for being kind to a tree person.

3. Fine mustache

Wondrous Item, uncommon

You're snazzy until you're not. That's the joke behind the fine mustache, a magic item that will torment your favorite character who just wants a bit of facial hair.

4. Swiss army wand

Wand, uncommon

Going on an adventure but tired of carrying so much stuff? You need the Swiss army wand! It has everything you need to set up camp, start a fire, and wave away all the other minutiae that stands between you and a nice long rest. The wand comes with an incredible 7 charges and can cast popular spells such as alarm, create bonfire, prestidigitation, and much, much more! Best of all, the wand regains a stunning 1d6+1 expended charges daily at dawn! Wow!

5. Hag mask

Wondrous Item, rare (requires attunement)

green haghag mask is a powerful magic item with horrifying origins. Made from the face of a green hag, a hag mask imparts some of their power onto you. You get a few cantrips, including the beloved vicious mockery, as well as access to fear.

While wearing a hag mask, you can fool others into believing you're an actual hag. The roleplay opportunities that presents are innumerable and can be hilarious — or deadly. It's also likely that the hag whose face you're wearing is alive and well, too. Imagine having to explain why you've donned the hag's face instead of returning it to the lost and found.

6. Britney spear

Weapon (spear), rare

The Britney spear is so chockfull of puns, it's almost criminal. But once you're wielding this magic weapon, you'll find that you're much stronger than yesterday.

The Britney spear grants advantage on every other attack, and adds poison damage to those you land. That's mighty strong, but fit for a queen of pop. Did I mention it comes in a denim carrying case? Bejewel it for some extra early 2000s flare.

7. Broche des Fleurs

Wondrous Item, rare (requires attunement)

Broche des Fleurs is a stylish floral pendant with as many uses as it has petals. The magic item works best for those with a high Charisma modifier, but any character can benefit from it.

The Broche des Fleurs has a heap of effects you can spend charges on. You can impose disadvantage on an attack roll made against you, add your Charisma modifier to a Constitution saving throw made to maintain concentration on a spell, or have your sleep spell benefit from the Careful Spell Metamagic, for example.

The brooch has just 4 charges you can use per day, with 1d4 expended charges regained at dawn. However, there is one great perk to the brooch even after you run out of charges: it's super stylish.

8. Boots of the vigilant

Wondrous Item, uncommon

Sometimes, the simplest magic items are the best. When you want to go first in combat, whether to drop a hypnotic pattern onto enemies or just move into a more advantageous position, the boots of the vigilant will help you make it happen. They add 1d8 to your initiative roll once per day. It's like gift of alacrity on a stick, but without the stick.

9. Moral compass

Wondrous Item, rare

Would that shopkeep try to rob you blind? Could that old woman be offering you a poisoned cookie? Ignore your gut feelings and take out your handy moral compass. It'll point you toward the most evil creature within 50 feet. A quick, easy way to tell when trouble is brewing. It can also come attuned to sniff out good creatures, in case you're the one causing trouble.

10. Player's mask

rakdos cultist

Wondrous Item, uncommon (requires attunement by a Bard)

All the world's a stage for a bard attuned to the player's mask. This porcelain mask can appear as any one of five characters of drama: the hero, the villain, the lover, the fool, or the sage. Which face you don affects the benefit imparted onto you. So, throw on your favorite frilled shirt and prepare to take centerstage, because you're a star now.
