Hey folks! I'm wondering if someone can help me out with a little issue I'm having with one of my homebrew creations.
Background: I'm running Call of the Netherdeep and started with the "Unwelcome Spirits" section from Explorer's Guide to Wildemount. In CotN, the main schtick is that your party has a matching party of rivals that can become your friends/enemies over the course of the adventure. As you level up, they also get new stat blocks, which results in them having 3 different tiers / CR over the course of the adventure. Because I have a party of 6 instead of 5 as recommended in the module, I took one of the throwaway characters from Unwelcome Spirits and turned him into another one of the rivals. As a result, I decided to homebrew his three stat blocks as the different tiers.
The issue: Anytime I try to make a new monster for Alonne Frith in a new tier, it automatically replaces the old tier. I'm trying to keep them as separate 'monsters': Alonne Frith (Tier 1) and Alonne Frith (Tier 2). However, anytime I try to make the Tier 2 version, it automaticaly replaces the Tier 1 version. I would like to have both versions of his monster stat blocks available to look at on D&D Beyond, but for whatever reason, I can't seem to have both. For reference, when I built the Tier 2 stat block, I clicked "add new monster" and then based it on what I had created for his Tier 1 stat block, edited it/added new challenges accordingly, and saved it as a new creature. I've checked both my homebrew creations and the homebrew monsters section of D&D Beyond, and sure enough, the new monster that I created is present but has completely deleted the previous one.
Weirdly enough, I've tried this a few times, and D&D Beyond seems to remember the different versions of his Tier 2 stat block because when I try to recreate it, it's an option for me to base it from. However, recreating it still deletes the old version of the Stat Block, even though I'm renaming it as a new creature, changing the stats, and saving it as something new (not a different version of the same creature).
Does anyone have any ideas what the issue is here / why this might be happening / what I'm doing wrong?
It looks like not publishing it worked and I have access to both versions of the monster - thank you for your help! I'm still not sure why I can't have 2 different monsters, labeled as a Tier 1 and a Tier 2 being published, but I won't worry about it unless someone else mentions they want to use the statblock. Either way, I appreciate your assistance!
You can have two separate versions published. You just can’t use the first version as a template if it’s published and publish the second version without overwriting the first. If you were to create Tier-2 from scratch it would be fine.
That being said, don’t publish them. Always fully playtest and edit your creations prior to publishing them.

Yes, I published the first one. When I try to publish the second, it replaces the Tier 1 version.
You have to make each version before publishing any of them.
