There really needs to be a way to differentiate between possessions carried on the person and those not. Or at least make vehicles NOT be factored into encumbrance.
Sure, maybe there's a ludicrous case where someone is actually trying to carry a Chariot around, but designing for corner cases is stupid, so these items really should not count toward your carried weight.
Yeah, I've been having problems with this too. I just got into D&D, and DnDBeyond has been a great help catching me up with my fellow players. But, I have a back-up character who has a wagon with two draft horses, and the character's carry weight has jumped past 500 lbs. which has caused my movement to decrease to 5 ft. I'd like this character to be my main back-up, but with the wagon doing what it is doing, I got a problem with that.
If any assistance can be provided, that would be much appreciated.
Well, by default a wagon shouldn't be adding its weight to a character's encumbrance, but yes, there really needs to be a 'containers/stored' option. I use Variant Encumbrance which means characters can really only carry the basics and everything else needs to be stored on mounts or mules or carts. It makes it very difficult to track equipment when you can't add or differentiate between what you're carrying and what you're storing elsewhere.

Why don’t they just add land vehicles to the ‘extras’ tab
Because we don’t have official statblocks for land vehicles. Land vehicles are equipment, not “vehicles” in a game mechanics sense. Homebrew “statblock” vehicles will be a thing eventually, and I’m hoping that WOTC will include statblocks for what are now equipment vehicles in a future book.
I have a character with a donkey and that has a carry capacity of 420 pounds. It shows what the weight it is carrying out of the 420. It is correctly labeled as a container. A draft horse also will carry 540 pounds and labels items correctly. Wagon, cart, or carriage are listed as containers with no capacity. Going back to square one you can buy the draft horse or mule and go under customization to override weight capacity set it for the capacity you want and give it a new Name like Cart of Travelling.
Ta Da... You have your wagon or cart container the size you want it.

I just added the wagon but didn't click it as being used.
And here we are 5 years later, and this hasn't been fixed yet.
What hasn't been fixed?
I can add a wagon and add items and as long as I don't check the use box - which tells the sheet "this is on my character" - the weight and any items added to it are not factored into encumberance. Which is exactly what this thread was asking for.
So... It has been fixed.

Well if you read my other comment, you would've seen I did the same thing. Also, I'd hardly call that a fix. Just a workaround.
It's not a workaround, it's the way it's supposed to work. The checkbox is what you use to tell the sheet "this affects my character". This is a deliberate mechanic and a very beneficial one.
I did read your other comment, which is why I'm confused. The "fix" has been given and solves every issue detailed in this thread. It's confusing why you're saying it is not fixed when the solution works perfectly for all issues presented.

Cyb3rM1nd is correct. The feature is called Containers. You should not check the box next to a container unless you want to add its weight to your encumbrance.

Well maybe I misunderstand the whole thing, but if you read that comment, why did you even bother to respond? Argh... internet...

Why don’t they just add land vehicles to the ‘extras’ tab
At the moment, I've edited my cart to 0 weight, and for each item I put into the cart rather than carrying, I change the weight to minus-x.
Putting my smith's tools in the cart? The cart now weighs negative eight pounds.
This way the cart is removing the weight of everything i'm not actually carrying.
It's a workaround though, and doesn't account for when I'm not with my cart, yet still have access to my full inventory.
Oh well.
