Just tried giving my character a short rest where I used 2 hit dice, and when I confirmed it reduced my HP to 0 and told me I failed my death saving throws, killing my character! Is there a bug going on?
Interesting campaign concept. I see you're "fine" now. I don't know what modifier would cause what you experienced, but I suspect a homebrew, especially that Crysteel Dagger. Make sure your DM knows what happened.
Someone with edit permissions on your sheet would be better able to check if it was a bug or not.
My DM went back in and manually changed my HP after so we could keep playing, so he's not currently showing as dead.
You can also manually reset your own HP if that ever happens again. I noticed that your PC has a homebrewed Magic Weapon named the “Crysteel Dagger.” If that item has the box checked that sets it to recharge on a short rest, but since it doesn’t have any charges, that might have caused the issue. Did your DM make it? If so. Let them know so they can double check that they didn’t accidentally put Short Rest in that dropdown when they created that Magic Item. (It’s under “Additional Information” in the ‘brewer where they made that item.
I'm the DM. The short rest button no longer kills them (yes, it did it for me at the time), but hit points for spending hit dice do not apply on current hit points. This is happening with my own character in another campaign.
Are you perhaps using temporary HP overrides to set your character's HP? Short rests and things tend to reset those temporary overrides - which could cause a loss in max HP and kill the character? (I'm just guessing here.)
That doesn't seem to be the issue - I don't have any temporary HP set up on this character. Whatever happened, it's not killing me any more
Does the short rest actually automatically roll the dice to restore my HP or am I expected to do that separately and add them using the HP modification tools?

That's weird. Please provide a link to your character sheet so someone can take a look.

You need to roll and use the HP modification tools.
