I am a simple dungeon master looking for reasons to play each class. (My players often ask why they should play “x” class and I was wondering what you guys think)
I'm obsessed with playing GWM builds, and barbarian is the one class that comes online the soonest with that in mind. Just attack recklessly every turn, ez dubs every time.
Plus, who doesn't enjoy playing out the buff sword dude fantasy? Gotta love it.
It's the simplest 5e class (well one of them) where you can lay back, relax, and start hitting stuff. It's not super technical, but it's good for someone who wants to lay back and just enjoy the game.
Reckless is an ability any other class would kill for. If it weren't so tightly tied to STR, a dip into barbarian would be an extremely common multiclass. High HP and the resistances granted by Rage make them exceptionally hardy. And as mentioned above, they synergize better with heavy weapons than any other class.
I really love the main defender / tank role in D&D; the classic frontliner wading into the fray without fear. You need three things to be an effective tank:
1. Endurance — whether through high defenses/AC or HP 2. Some sort of taunt mechanic or some way to attracts enemies’ attention towards to you 3. It’s not the first priority, but you need to be at least competent in the offense, otherwise you will just be a damage sponge / meat shield
Fighters and Paladins can make awesome defenders, but no one can beat the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian. It’s one of the best team play sub-classes out there. Prioritize CON to boost your HP, don’t forget to use shoves and grapples and get Resilient (Wisdom) ASAP to offset your only weakness. You will be the prefect warrior ensuring your party survivability and being a force to be reckon in combat thanks to Reckless Attack and Rage.
I’m playing a Dwarf Ancestral Guardian. I’m able to lockdown two different enemies between Ancestral Protectors and grapple attempts, mixing up some shoves and generating more impact in the battlefield than any Wizard.
For me it's the flavor. I enjoy playing front line marshal characters, especially in a world where there are mages throwing around fireballs and lightning bolts, and I really enjoy the fantasy of a Warrior that basically is too stubborn to die and is kind of an everyman. Barbarians don't have a fighting style and rage granting resistance translates in my head to just a Warrior that is so angry at everything they're just gonna hit stuff until their problems go away. That's something I can't get away with in real life so it's incredibly satisfying for me to play a character like that.

You got a d12 when you bought your set of dice... Barbarian is gonna be the only class that regularly makes use of it.
