I don't see a lot of Yuan Ti PCs. With that being said do it if you want to play a Yuan Ti barbarian. Their isn't much reason not to. Yeah the ASI's don't align and if you rage you can't use the innate spells. But the magic resist is really nice, the innate spell casting works out of rage, and it'll be an unique character.
I like the idea of a Yuan-Ti Barbarian especially if you do a lot of grappling go for a whole snake constrictor theme lol Most people tend to opitimise their class and race choices, I am the other way I role for my stats first, then I pick my class and then I pick my race and it will either be optimised or just fun. I have a half orc barbarian/artificer (battle smith), the plan was always to go artificer but I wanted a level of barbarian in their first for back story. He's an ex prize fighter who always looks his best and carries the best looking weapons and since he cannot trust other blacksmiths to create what he wants he does it himself. I just thought it looked good in my head this hulking barbarian who once he had forged the perfect blade, would then spend a week doing all the detail work to make a blade worthy of an elven artist lol
That is strange i was thinking about this earlier this week. I see it as more of a buy points issue of getting pluses on what most barbarians considers dumb stats. This seems like a non issue if you rolled for stats. Immunity to poison and poison condition is useful as well, have a caster cast Stink Cloud and go in swinging.
Gnomes give a similar bonus but it only applies to Int, Wis, and Cha saves. But also +1 in a useful stat. They lack the use of heavy weapons, not an issue if you go for two-weapon fighting.
Because YuanTi have no emotions. Makes no sense for them to Rage.
Rage doesn't have to be rage. It could be something like a fighting trance.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
no it isn't. The weave has nothing to do with it. it says you enter a rage. That's all it says. YOU define what a rage is. People get focused on rage equals anger, but nothing in the lore actually states that. It simply says you fight with primal ferocity. You don't have to "reflavor" anything.
In battle, you fight with primal ferocity. On your turn, you can enter a rage as a bonus action.

I know that some people view the barbarian's rage as the primal spirits that you are connected to enter you and empower you. There primal ferocity influences you, turning you more feral and aggressive.

Assuming you can freely change stat increases with the release of Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, Satyr seem to be better than Yuan Ti for barbarians. Perhaps easier to role play 'rage' too.
I get that you don't need to always play an optimized race, but barbarians don't just need STR. They also need DEX and CON - I'd put them at #3 behind Monk and Paladin for the most MAD race. Yuan-ti gives them none of that. If your combats are tuned for a party running at baseline or higher effectiveness, you'll be a drain on resources. I do expect Tasha's will help with this.
But honestly I kind of like that magic is a weakness of barbarians, especially the mental/psionic kind. Nothing more iconic than a mind-controlled barbarian charging at his wizard buddy!
Hence why a Berserker archetype is actually far better than it seems at first glance. It doesn’t matter how much damage you can do if you can’t even get close enough to hit. But the stats people won’t factor that into their calculations when comparing ;)

No doubt! And Intimidating Presence is a great social skill too which barbarians usually lack in.
I honestly want to play a Yuan-ti Abomination (Pure-Blood stats but just looks like an Abomination) that is a Path of the Beast Barbarian, rejecting the tenets of the false god Merrshaulk/Sseth and instead embraced the primal fury of the World Serpent itself.
I don't see a reason why not? In the Yuan-Ti lore, they learned to suppress their emotions so your character doesn't have to be like the ones who managed it completely. It could be that rage is the only thing that your character cannot control!
Also, i've been applying this rule for a while now and it doesn't sound game breaking for me, you can ask the DM to basically allow players to have +1,+2 to whatever stats they want instead of the ones given to int and cha respectively. As for DC, i'd say maybe keep it as it is for the sake of balance? but if your DM is willing they can make it into whatever stat you want but i personally never tried it as of yet.

Born under the watch of something from the furthest corners of the far realms.... It knows all.... it sees all... and it asks: "What is it that you want to see?"... and my answer is... ALL"
Hey, I'm actually playing one of these right now! I can attest that I'm having a ton of fun with it.
Magic resistance and poison immunity make for one hell of a tank, particularly with Bear totem (what I went with, though we're playing Tomb of Annihilation so I've skinned the totems as dinosaurs instead) and the spells allow for entertaining moments even if your DCs will be so low that most things will make the save. Infinitely charming snakes is fun, what can I say? I found this especially fun with the totem feature that lets you ritual cast Speak With Animals.
I get that the emotional aspect of it is a little confusing at first for lore reasons but it's hardly unprecedented or unworkable. The book actually suggests this as a flaw option for them:
I feel twinges of emotion, and it shames me that I am imperfect in this way.
Now there's a lot you can do with that, and (DM approval pending) you can take it to whatever extent you want. In my case, my Barb developed full emotions and has no idea why (nor do I, but the DM's aware and it'll be a fun secret to eventually uncover, hopefully). Since he's got such little experience with having emotions to control he's obviously terrible at controlling them, so he'll fly into a rage pretty readily. This leads to a very... well, big personality all in all which fits well with our group. If I wanted to do something more toned-down I would take the flaw suggested and play it as the rage being a reflection of those rare "twinges" with emotion mostly dulled otherwise (except, obviously, where fun/interesting).
Obviously, you'll be a very strange Yuan-Ti because of the above, but PCs are strange and often exceptional people in general. Make sure not to let your only character traits be that you're a snake with emotion and you'll be a perfectly fun and cool character with some really satisfying mechanics. I haven't found myself suffering too hard for the stat distribution, and if your DM allows for Tasha's rules or other variants then you'll have an even easier time of things.

Is there a reason why not many people make Yuan Ti Barbarians?
if you treat not having +2 strength as an ASI or Advantage on all spell saves as a feat. it doesn't seem so bad to me.
While raging, you would have basically advantage on STR, Dex if it can be seen, and any spells.
The only thing bad is I can see at lower levels, you would sacrifice + 1 bonus to hit/dam while not as many spell casting opponents.

Yeah, the emotionless snake-person doesn't seem to be terribly popular as a PC race, for all its vaunted power.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

If you want to reflavor it. But lore wise it's using your anger to tap into the weave
