starting at 20th level, by the time most campaigns will have ended the barbarian can use rage an unlimited amount of times, meaning that they could choose to be in their rage 100% of the time when they are not asleep, something that could be a bit of an exploration boon for instance for an path of the beast barbarian who could via such means gain immunity to extreme heat and cold and using it to avoid certain enviormental damage. But like is there any drawback you could see to this tactic? would i be able to take short rests? would a constant state of anger, pain and alertness eventually cause an character to become insane?

i am soup, with too many ideas (all of them very spicy) who has made sufficient homebrew material and character to last an thousand human lifetimes
Well, it would make any elf-kind Zealots immortals which would make them pretty over-powered.
please elaborate on this point, why is the combination of trance, the subclass features of the zealot barbarian and using rage all hours of the day overpowered?

Besides making them pretty much immortal? Isn't that enough to make them OP? They won't really die of old age, at least not in a long time, they can't be put to sleep using magic and they can't die from reaching zero hit points.
Normally this is of course countered by the fact that once a minute you will have to end and re-start the rage but your suggestion of "constant" rage "100% of the time" removes this problem.

i mean what i mean by "rage 100% of the time" is of course re-entering rage constantly every minute or so, so since that is the case you could still die

The actual mental state that Rage represents is up to you. It can be extreme focus, excitability, whatever. It doesn't have to be negative emotions despite the default flavor.
The real issue is that you need to attack or be damaged to keep it up, so unless you are using your bonus action literally all of the time outside of combat (which is technically not even possible because you don't have turns when you're not in initiative order), you can't constantly Rage.

first problem is solved by relentless rage gained at 15th level "Beginning at 15th level, your rage is so fierce that it ends early only if you fall unconscious or if you choose to end it." and also if you are unable to take actions and bonus actions outside of combat that would render most spells such as sleep, charm person, stone shape etc completely unusable since they also need actions or bonus actions to cast
also yeah i know people like to refluff rage i just assumed the base default since it might be a bit more interesting in terms of side effects

I didn't mean you can't take actions outside of combat. I mean like once you take a bonus action, when is it time to do the next one? There's no rounds. The six seconds thing is an approximation that describes combat, not a hard rule that applies all the time.
But you are correct about Persistent Rage. I have never gotten a barbarian that high and didn't remember that feature.

Yeah, in that case it would work. Could be interesting to try it out. Perhaps as a very paranoid bearbarian tyrant who is in a constant rage or a weapon master who is in a zenlike state of more or less constant focus?

Besides that, a lot of characters would probably go insane, yes.
