Heavy Armor Mastery is a great feat for early in the game, especially if a +1 strength helps push you into a higher bonus. However its -3 DR loses its utility rapidly as monster attacks start becoming magical by default. Is there a feat that improves upon Heavy Armor Mastery so as to for instance, make its Damage Resistance effective versus magical weaponry as well?
If there is no such feat, how might you homebrew one?

I honestly would just make it equal to proficiency so it starts out weaker but gets stronger later, and then add that it blocks magical weapon damage reduction if the armor you're wearing is magical. It's home-brew, but I think it would help make the feat not just a low-level one.

As is it is really poor. The difficulty is that if you increase the protection then it comes too close to overshadowing the resistance from barbarian rage. I would be tempted to leave it at 3, but do something interesting like removing stealth disadvantage or the drop in move speed if your strength isn’t high enough. It’s never been a thing in my games though. Nobody has ever even asked about it so I haven’t bothered giving it serious thought

I would just remove the word "nonmagical" from the feat altogether. I think scaling the DR to proficiency bonus is too much.
