It really, genuinely sucks how asking for a free character generator gets you infinite amounts of people who can't read telling you to go pay for D&Dbeyonds sub-par tools. Really wish someone would make something like Pathbuilder for this system but i'm pretty sure Wizards in their infinite generosity would stomp it out of existence on sight. The closest i've found to a builder is fast character, but it's also not perfect and I think is only good for *starting* characters, not building them.
Again, there is no such thing as a Great free character builder. DDB is the closest to that and still has some issues, mostly on user friendliness; Roll20 is unstable and can get corrupted, and Foundry is locked behind a hefty paywall

There are only three licensed digital partners for D&D fifth edition:
roll20
Fantasy Grounds
FoundryVTT
Those, combined with D&D Beyond, make up your options for character creation with pre-integrated official content outside the SRD. And you know what all three have in common? You need to pay for the pre-integrated content. That's because it's not free content full-stop; you have to pay for every physical book and digital is no different.
These tools require people to build and maintain and integrate the content. There are licenses to be paid and costs to be covered. That's why these tools cost money to use and/or add content to.
There are plenty of "non-licensed" options, the legal ones just require data input and it costs less than a year or two of subscription to realize with no buy in digitally, just buy the physical book(s) [REDACTED] input the data into one of the many character spreadsheets and you're golden, just don't sell the results, but you can share them at your table.
Dungeon Masters Vault has a pretty good online character builder. By default it has just SRD content. But it has the option to import content packs from the community. DM me if you need help getting it configured to be more useful.
i keep hearing this but im literally doing this with two people from italy and one from the united states while the rest of us are dutch, doesn't work as well especially if there are a lot of first time players.. also ill be honest i think paper isnt accessible for my dyslexic friend
Just use the Foundry VTT tools for 5e. Its about the same as beyond and you can always roll in the VTT/apply auras/effects/spells much easier than beyond.

30 dollars gets you pretty much everything you need which is just the base system....you can build what you need in foundry much faster than beyond IMO

If DDB has shown us anything it is that people are willing to pay for a character creation tool(s), but they need to work well, and give people what they want, not what the owners want to sell.

CENSORSHIP IS THE TOOL OF COWARDS and WANNA BE TYRANTS.
there use to be a non profit site that had all the content on it. it wasnt pirated it wasnt stealing. they used the open gaming license to be able to share content with people who dont have extra money to spen 50 on a book even the 15-20 on dnd beyond for someone who lives paycheck to paycheck but still wants to play is too much. dont push a product when the company itself is gatekeeping. WoTC is one step away from policing play groups who share books cause they want everyone to buy there stuff and sharing to them is stealing.

Since you're replying to me. Any site that offers non-free content to the public for free is operating illegally.
Lack of funds is not an excuse for the illegal procurement of luxury things. If you cannot afford the luxury thing then do not buy the luxury thing. You don't need to pay a penny to play D&D, the game is already free. Low income is not justification for buying unnecessary extra, premium, content.
D&D Beyond is one of, if not the, cheapest place to get the premium content - legally.
I am well aware of living on just basic wages, and used to living on less as I am living off benefits / welfare which is less than standard rate wages, thanks to a brain condition and being unable to work. I will stand by my words, anyway.

I want to take my money to dndbeyond alternative that can add new features to the tool within reasonable amount of time. Does it exist?
No.

So, I have logged into DDB to create a new character in a friend's campaign. He has purchased all of the core 5e books, so we can usually build anything for our game. Imagine my surprise when I get an unholy mashup of 5e and 5.5e character traits being displayed.
Whilst there is a Sources checkbox for Legacy (includes 2014 rules), there appears to be no setting to disable 5.5e content. This makes DDB a mess for 5e players as a character generator. So it is no longer about it being expensive but more about it being unusable.

I know, and I'm saying that is a bad thing that sucks and really hampers the fun that can be had with this game.
Well, get cracking 😛 be the change and all that!
