I tried to send this as an Email over the weekend but it got kicked back:
Your message wasn't delivered to hello@dndbeyond.com because the address couldn't be found, or is unable to receive mail.
So that's why I am posting this here. It seemed appropriate as you are talking about the future.
Hello, my name is Anthony and D&D has been a part of my life since 1990 when I killed my first goblin. I have a large amount of hard copies of supplements and source books that I have collected over the years, including my 2 Edition Players Handbook that I bought at a Walden’s Book store at the local Mall. (Dang I’m old.) I do plan to pass these down as I have received many years of enjoyment from them.
So hopefully that sets up my perspective for the questions I would like to ask about your product before I start to invest in it.
1 if for some unseen turn of events happens and your business does not exist anymore, will I still be able to use this product? I understand if you don’t exist you can’t support the product (updates and such).
2 if and when WotC comes out with 6, 7, 8th etc. editions for reasons, will this product still be supported?
3 if after I have passed on will I be able to pass on this collection, like the physical books that I have collected?
Most importantly, Thank You for your time and thank you for this product. I have had a great time using the free version and believe it would serve well to enhance my game play and that of my groups as well!
The first two are frequently asked-about things, and I know Adam Bradford (the head of DDB) has addressed them elsewhere.
Addressed in this forum thread (though it's now owned by the company Fandom, not Twitch).
Touched on in this thread, but the tl;dr is that DDB will support 5e at least through the lifetime of the edition. They can't predict the future.

Yeah this is very much in WotC's court, not DDB's. I don't think it's been clarified as to whether WotC can tell them 5E is over, and they have to stop, or if it's up to DDB, but my guess would be that it's the former, because WotC's digital licenses have been a lot tighter in the last few years. However, as long as they feel DDB is just making them extra money and not splitting the audience, I imagine they'll let it continue for a few years past a 6E, at least. One difference from the 4E DDI (which WotC recently shut down) is that people on DDB have actually paid for specific products, not a generic license to access all 4E material. As such, ordering a shut-down, even if people still have offline access, would be a bigger deal, and create more backlash for WotC, and potentially poison the well on future digital D&D products. Given that, as long as DDB isn't perceived as harmful to 6E, I think WotC are likely to be pretty cautious about messing with it.
However, with 6E, really only one of two things is going to happen. Either WotC will develop their own, in-house digital solution for 6E (they've been massively increasing their digital presence, and now outright own two AAA-class computer game devs, for example, one bought, one built), or they'll buy DDB off Fandom and bring it in-house. I think if DDB continues to do a really good job with characters and so on, and puts out a strong VTT, the latter is likely (assuming Fandom are willing to sell), because playing catch-up would be non-trivial. I mean, this is assuming 6E has a basically similar structure to 5E, but that does seem likely, given the last massive change backfired (4E).
So, I'm looking at the public roadmap, and was wondering where the homebrew classes fit in there on the roadmap. I really like the homebrew races and think a phenomenal job was done there, but was curious where the homebrew classes fit in on there.

homebrew classes might come in the nearby future. dnd beyond was nowhere near able to sustain homebrew classes with its old incarnation and tech. they have recently upgraded all their interface and database to be able to sustain the feature variant that was shown in unearthed arcana and thats the first step in being able to make custom homebrew classes. so its fair to say at this point that, thanks to wizard of the coast new incoming book "tasha's cauldron to everything" we'll probably have homebrew classes availlable to us or something very close to it, as soon as november of this year !
PS: to note, the new incoming book that will be released in november will change the very core of 5th edition and thus has forced beyond to make uber changes to their site. changes which were already done and are now ready to bring the new stuff in. as far as i know, i now understand why they were willing to make those changes a few months back, they probably already knew the new book was coming and they had to prepare for it.
for those who wonders... last year unearthed arcana is entirely in the new book. so the new book contains these...
- New Lineage option, changing races racial abilities for those that we actually want to create your own very unique lineage ! - 22 subclasses for all 13 classes, 5 of them comes from older books, like bladesinging and circle of the spore for druids. - above i said 13 classes because yes, the official artificer class is coming in that book. so we'll finally see the official final version of artificer. - new magical items, new artifacts and new magical tattoos - new feats - new spells - traps and hasards for the DMs out there, puzzles too ! - Variant class features which changes the core features of classes. basically now we'll have to choose not just archetype, but also which feature we want to replace. - New Group patrons, the ability to be part of a faction of sort and have actual work and mechanics enabled for you to use. - New rules for sidekicks and classes specific to the said sidekicks. - new rules help those wanting to parley with monsters. - last but not least described... how to efficiently run a session 0 and how to play with less then 4 players including how to play solo 1 on 1 sessions. (Least interested int hat one, but its cool that its there)
so yeah beyond had to completely overhaul their coding there. lots are coming in november.

i doubt them to ever change that. they also made tons of tools for 4e and people liked them, but yet even after that they decided that it was better to give the tool development to other companies, like beyond, FG or Roll20. why would they decidee that after trying their own experiement, mainly because they warranted that they didn't have th emanpower to do so and manage tons of boks int he same time frame. with 5e having boosted to 4 books per year instead of the two of old. its normal that their employees don't have the time to develop tools now. not to meniton those tools were nowhere near as professionnal as beyond, FG or roll20 are.
the best guess is... roll20, FG and Beyond probably wll continu to support other editions once they come out. Roll20 and FG already support numerous TTRPG and they also include older d&d editions. its not any wonder to think that wotc won't change a winning formula. its been working this way, unloading them and giving them more time to concentrate on the real thing, developping the game and books !

though that gives each players a lot of customising if you are making equipement for say, a future version of your world. like i am about to do for my next campaign. i don't mind making all the necessary magical items if i can do it. but the thing is... each players having to check on documents i made and having to select a weapon and then modify it by my specs... thats a lot of customisation right there.
i really hope its gonna be sooner then later on that one.
Adding a club to a character sheet and changing the name to nunchucks takes a fraction of the time that it did for me to type this reply. While I agree that we really do need the ability to create homebrew nonmagical equipment, the current workaround really isn’t the most inconvenient flaw on DDB. Have you looked at the Bugs & Support forum lately? Thems some real inconveniences right there. When considered under that perspective, it really isn’t that bad.
i don't think you understand there... its not just me changing the name of a club to nunchuks... its me recreating shadowrun "entire" list of equipment to d&d 5e. i have a very long list of things to do and thats a very big endeavor. also, the players looking thru the books to change their stats to reflect those i have put is hard. i'm not using, at all, the DMG weapons. they are unrealistic to say the least. sorry but that full plate will still block the laser gun. there is no reason why a laser gun would be more lethal then a long sword. sorry but magical items just to give players their own arsenal is a long process, and i can't even make my own weapons without taking either a weapon that has not the right stats or that have not the right properties, not to mention i want to make my own properties too if possible.
thats a lot of work for me, work that would be much better if i could just create mundane weapons from the get go.

So, I'm looking at the public roadmap, and was wondering where the homebrew classes fit in there on the roadmap. I really like the homebrew races and think a phenomenal job was done there, but was curious where the homebrew classes fit in on there.
It'd probably be rolled into the homebrew revamp that was listed on the roadmap until the recent reorganization. It was in the longer-term category, and had been for a long time. Suffice to say that with the constant flow of new official material to incorporate, I wouldn't expect this until 2022 earliest... and that's pushing it.

Yeah, I used to do devops work for a financial services firm, so I get that dev time and real world time aren't exactly a 1:1 ratio, haha. That being said, I was disappointed to see the homebrew revamp drop off the public roadmap; but, with the new Tasha book coming it, dndbeyond will have a lot of work to do in the DB's if that source is going to add the options that it reads like it's going to add.
what i would like to be added in the future is homebrew vehicles/ mounts. i think that if they cant add an entire mounts section, then they should at least add a option to classify your monsters as mounts in the advanced search

Any creature at least one size larger than the character can be a mount. They aren’t specified.
Homebrewing a mount is just like homebrewing any other “monster” like a Riding Horse.

Could they then be added to the Extras section? I'm not sure how flexible that is, or even if you get one if you don't have familiar/animal companion/wildshape... (ETA: Yep. Looks like that section is super flexible)
I noticed Tashas Cauldron of Everythinf isnt on the roadmap yet. Any idea the timeline on incorporating it?
It isn't due to be released until next quarter, and I'm unsure if the devs get much advance access. I would expect it to be integrated in December earliest. Maybe the subclasses will come earlier because they already have the UA subs to work with.
ooo! So the combat tracker should be testing using character and monster data in the next six months or so?!?!?! That would be spectacular! Feels like I could come up with my own way to move stuff around a VTT board for almost no money after that feature is rolled out.

I've heard of people just using video chat and sharing their screen with an image editor program to move tokens around. If you don't need any of the advanced features, you can definitely get creative!

I assume that to the extent possible, DDB will try to have as much of it working by the release date as they can; aside from some stuff that required a backend rework to get it to work, like the Spells of the Mark for Eberron and the Guild Spells for Ravnica, DDB has always had the digital version of a book ready to go by the time the book is scheduled to release. Unlike UA playtest content, which DDB doesn't get any advance notice for (as far as I know), for books WotC probably gets the material to all their digital distributors with some advance notice. Especially since they've already announced/teased a bunch of the things that will be included in the book, I assume most of that stuff is in a final/near-final form, so WotC is probably sending it out to their digital distributors relatively soon if they haven't already.
EDIT: It's probably just not on the roadmap yet because WotC needs to do something before DDB/FG/Roll20 can officially announce that they'll have the product and enable preorders and such.
They are working on creating the new thing, but you have to remember that they don't have much time to do it, they have maximum 2 months now to prepare for tasha and i doubt them to have gotten it yet. but as soon as they were told that those we're getting into a bookj, they we're working madly for the last 6 months on it. so with hopes it'll be there.
as a developper developping its own softwares to help myself in creation. i can tell you, its cool once you have the tools, its easier to go forward. but when you need to create a tool from scratch its a long game. tasha's book is one of those... their tools won't be able to completely do the book and as such thats why they are working extra hard on making sure their integration engine can work with whats coming, so that they can port the book easier when it comes out.

Honestly i would love to say that once 6e is released, 5E would be archived meaning you can use everything you had bought, but no new sales/development/limited support to only if an updates breaks it. However, digital rights can get messy. I think if they straight up pulled it all, then folks would never buy another digital book from DDB or WOTC.
I highly doubt WOTC will get into the selling of the digital books, as already stated, they are a publisher, not a distributor or storefront. I do not think they want any of that overhead. They tried, it, it worked OK, I think they lost money on it (being a license instead of a product purchase) and never went back to it. I could be wrong, but this is only my personal opinion.
Which all this being said, I would love for DDB to open up and offer other publishers stuff. Either for 5e or other game systems. Who knows, maybe now that Fandom owns them we will see a sister company come out for other game systems (though would hate to not be able to have cross integration between them).

If those "influncers" we seen all over promoting Tasha's, not to mention a group that is supposed to be playing based on it at the D&D Celebration 2020 Stream and Chis Perkins has a copy, then I am sure DDB has one to build off.

I just want to tell everyone "happy gaming" and actually mean it. Whatever your game is, just have fun with it, it is after all, just a game.
If those "influncers" we seen all over promoting Tasha's, not to mention a group that is supposed to be playing based on it at the D&D Celebration 2020 Stream and Chis Perkins has a copy, then I am sure DDB has one to build off.
