I've just started using D&D Beyond over the last week to create multiple campaigns and characters and have assigned certain characters with campaigns.
So my questions are of the following options for each character
UNASSIGN (I believe that this option removes the character from the campaign it is in)
MORE Pulldown Options
REMOVE (if the UNASSIGN option above removes the character from the campaign, what does this option do?)
DEACTIVATE (what does this option do that the others don't?)
I run quite a few games and most of them are to teach new players the game, so creating and managing their characters with D&D Beyond works best for me and mostly because of the ability to print the characters and bring them to the games. Eventually I want the players to create accounts and manage their own character. I haven't got into how I would transfer a character to a player yet and maybe one of the above options is for doing that?
Unassign leaves the character in the campaign, but allows anyone in the campaign to "Claim" it, making it their character.
Remove takes a character out of a campaign.
Deactivate keeps the character in the campaign and belonging to the person who owns it, but it doesn't count against the max number of characters for the campaign slots or for campaign sharing.

Unassign allows me to then give the character to someone that has been invited to my campaign and allows them to make edits as well? If so then that's kind cool. Those character's still have, or automatically have, access to purchases I've made, or do I have to allow them to access those somehow?
Remove makes sense.
Deactivate would then make sense for NPC's, player characters that have died, or player characters that have been retired in that particular campaign.
The PC keep what already selected in it however if sombody else want to edit it is limited to what content they have.
For example Person1 has everything and has assigned hexblade warlock (XGE)
unasign it the PC stay unchanged even if Person2 who doesn't have the content claim it
However Person2 has only SRD so if it wanna do any changes it can only edit what the SRD offers.
If you wanna share what you got the campaing owner need to have Master tier subscription and allow content sharing on his campaing and the the person the have the allow his content to share with the rest of the campaing people.
So as the owner of the campaign, if the player has disappeared, there is no way to un-assign their character? Even if I (as the DM) created the character?
Yes. Deactivating just removes from active roster. Like, if a player can’t make it that night the DM can deactivate their PC for the evening so it doesn’t populate the combat tracker. Or some campaigns each player has multiple PCs, but only one active at a time. Those inactive PCs get deactivated until their players swap characters again.
So my son signed up on DNDBeyond with his school gmail, which has now been closed so he can't access the site any more. He's making a new account, but can't go on to unassign his character so I can reassign it to his new account. Is there some kind of character export/import that will speed the process of recreating the character?
Hello. I am the DM and I created a campaign. I also created my son's character under my account. I created a new DnD Beyond account for him. I would like to:
Add my son's character to my campaign (which is currently in my DnD Beyond Profile/Account),

Add my son's character to my campaign (which is currently in my DnD Beyond Profile/Account),
Unassign it from my account/profile,
So he can claim the character in his profile.
How do I do this? :)
Thanks for your help.

You make a request for help in a new thread. :-)
You click on the link for your campaign.
You select the character you want in the campaign.
From within the campaign you "unassign" the character.
The other account uses the same link to join the campaign.
The other account selects the unassigned character to play.
I deactivated a character, made a copy and renamed it for a new player, but, I can't find a way to make this a part of my existing campaign. My intention was to then make the copy an unassigned character so that when I invite my new friend to the campaign, they can claim it.

Hello there Lyndoralien,
If you are the creator of the campaign, copy and paste the campaign Invite URL into your browser. You should then have the option to add a premade character. Add the character for your friend, then unassign it.
Is there a way to hide the character from other players? That's way that player can have access to the content I purchased but is a secret until the moment they come in.
On the very first page when you create a character, at the very bottom of the page, there is an option to make the character public or private. Choose private, then only the player and the DM can see the character sheet.

That doesn't hide the existence of the character though, including its name, race and class levels.
You can remove the character as soon as it's ready - and claimed! - though (it'll stay in the player's character collection, it won't be deleted). That way the other players might only spot it while you're creating it. Even better, create a separate campaign and only invite that new player; that way they can do what they want and none of the others can see any of it. Send an invite to the real campaign later, and the player will be able to join at the exact right time with the character of choice.
If a player in a campiagn has all of their characters deactivated, do they still count against the 12 player limit for the campaign? I want to run multiple parties (3) on different nights, but have more than 12 players total (14) and sometimes 2 parties will see each other for a combined session (great fun, highly recommend) so I'd like them all in the same campaign, and I'll just deactivate the players who aren't present. Would that work?

Playing high charisma characters with no real life charisma - the only fantasy that still eludes me.

That limitation only applies to content sharing. I just created a test campaign and joined with 16 different, all active, characters to make sure. If the content sharing is an issue, remove the players that aren't present and invite them back in later, the content will not get removed from or disabled on their character sheets in the meantime, they just won't be able to add more content that isn't shared with them at the time.

I am not seeing an option to Unassign a character. A player has dropped out of my campaign, so want to free up his character for a replacement player.
Only options I see are these: View, Edit, Deactivate, Remove

You should be able to go into the My Characters collection and copy the character, then deactivate or remove the old one and replace it with the copy.
Can a deactivated character be reactivated?
