Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
I'm betting Xanathar's 2.0/Planescape, if there is a 4th book. IF. Major if. Last year they had 5 books, so they might scale back a bit this year. Also, the pandemic could delay a possible 4th book to next year.
I would love it if we got this. So much more than a campaign setting. It's not like you can play in all of the settings. A Xanathar's would be so much more useful.
I'm point out that Levi tied Xanther's 2 to a setting, Planescape, which as far as settings go is useful to other settings.
Yeah, Planescape doesn't really count as a setting. Sure, it has a bunch of places you can go to, but it's not really a true campaign setting, like Spelljammer isn't. It's more of a way to get around.
Spoken like someone who's never looked at Planescape beyond reading the third edition Manual of the Planes. Planescape absolutely was its own setting with its own characters, factions, plots, and whatnot. The fact that it could also connect to other D&D settings was extra.
I have never played a previous edition of D&D or read a book from then. It is not a typical campaign setting.
Yes, that's the entire point of Planescape. It wasn't typical. It took demons, devils, celestials, elementals, and various other creatures that typically only saw use guarding rooms in dungeons or as things for characters to summon and focused on the part of the D&D cosmos where they lived instead of the part where elves or dwarves or humans did. The fact that you could reach it via Planeshift didn't make it less of a setting- that's also true for going from the Forgotten Realms to Greyhawk or Dark Sun (whether or not it can get you to Eberron is something entirely, but Eberron was deliberately designed to be it's own isolated world instead of connected to the D&D Multiverse). If you don't want people being abrassive, maybe put a little effort into not being dismissive of subjects you're not actually that familiar with.
You know what, I'm not going to provoke this anymore. The fact that you assume that I don't know about a subject doesn't mean that you have the right to be rude.

Try avoiding statements like "it's not a 'real' campaign setting" or other such dismissals if you don't want people to think that you're trying to pick a fight.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
I love it. It'd really help with many of the character concept's I've had that juuuuuust don't quite fit because of the ability scores (of course, I realize there's homebrew, but it's still nice to have that be listed as a supported option).
Anyway, I think the new racial ability score-swapping sounds amazing. Any thoughts?
Sounds like giving players an easier way to play race-class combos that don't leave you with bonuses to dump stats or make you feel like you're shooting yourself in the foot unless you go with the same boring options ever time, so I'm in favor.

I didn't mean that I didn't want a setting, just that I'd prefer it if the book had lots of character options (like Xanathar's). Preferably options that went well with many different settings.
Just that statement from them alone makes me incredibly excited about what they have to offer in the future. One thing that has always kinda irked me about DnD going all the way back to 1e was that only certain races could become certain classes for whatever reason, or you alignment determined what you could learn and i love them directly saying they want to go away from that
With respect to the part of the announcement that said they would be revising Curse of Strahd and Tomb of Annihilation, will D&D Beyond update these as well? I assume that means the old text disappears into the ether, or can we switch in between versions? I am not sure what changes this will actually entail, but if they are changing characters that have appeared or anything substantive, it could be disruptive/confusing to an existing campaign.

DDB will most likely update the books.

I imagine CoS will stay substantially exactly the same and the changes they talked about will more just be the way things are phrased, all because of how beloved CoS is. Any substantial changes will most definitely come in that other book they referenced which i am hella excited about
Vistani would be pretty an odd inclusion to anything set in the Forgotten Realms.

Not really. Vistani exist in Ravenloft, which is in the Shadowfell, which is connected to the Forgotten Realms.

It means that Half-Orcs can be better Wizards or Bards now, or Githzerai as monks, and so on.

I will reserve judgement for after seeing how it is implemented, but I am hopeful.

My thoughts exactly.
I'm also happy that they're releasing a sourcebook as well as an adventure - I was getting a little worried about that.

Maybe they are hinting to a full Ravenloft Campaign Guide?
She/Her Player and Dungeon Master
It's possible with them saying that the Vistani are appearing in 2 books that are not Curse of Strahd.
They hinted in a video last year that Chwingas are coming back somehow. I don't know if this is connected to anything.
Maybe Xanathar's 2.0 will be named something like "Vistani's Guide to the Planes".
