Thanks for the clarification, this only reaffirmed my extreme hatred for this.
You just told us that no, 2014 will no longer supported. I don't want to use one dnd. I want to use 5e, the edition I paid money for. You implented legacy tags before. Do it again.
Implement legacy tags for magic items and spells. Do NOT simply auto update all of the things we've built without our consent.
Implement a toggle. Let me DECIDE which version I use on my character sheet. Past, currently ongoing, and future characters still should be able to be played under 5e rules and with all of the content that was paid for.
I've turned off my auto sub to master tier just earlier, thank you for reaffirming why I did that. Neither me or literally ANY of my friends want to play ONE dnd. We've been using it for 5e for years now. This is genuinely unbelievable and I don't think the suits realize that no, this is not promoting people to want to spend money. Absolutely insane. You were gonna get another round of yearly sub money this september but quite frankly if this goes through, the company doesn't deserve it.
You have created a legacy tab in the past. Why not just put the spells/ everything being affected into Legacy? Then everyone can continue their current campaigns without having the rules change on them. I am interested in One dnd, but I am not interested in things being overwritten when you have proved a legacy toggle is possible. Also.. you want people to purchase pre-existing books, they will go through the books and see spells they want for their character. They now go to create their character and see that those same spells have completely different wordings??? That makes no sense.
Absolutely nothing in this "clarification" fixes the concerns we have. We are still losing access to the 2014 spells IN THE CHARACTER SHEETS, which is the primary function we use D&D Beyond for.
I appreciate the clarification, but this still means that my 2014 breaks when you release the 2024 update. My players in a long-running campaign will load up their D&D Beyond character sheets and get spell descriptions that don't match the version of the game we're running at the table. And that automation is the only reason we use this website, so if it breaks for our game there's no reason to stick around.
All we need is a version toggle. Let 2014 character sheets continue to connect to just the 2014 items, and let 2024 character sheets connect to the updated versions. That makes everyone happy and keeps those of us who can't switch versions in the middle of a game able to keep using the site.
I personally don't mind the change, I plan on using the updates. However, I just don't understand why there can't be a toggle on the spell page of the character sheet to switch between legacy spells and 2024 spells. This is a feature implemented in several other places on the site, it cannot be insurmountable to add for spells.
When updated, Spell descriptions on character sheets will default to 2024 Core Rulebook descriptions. All users, regardless of whether they have purchased the 2024 Player’s Handbook, will be able to access these updated Spells for free if they previously purchased the 2014 Player’s Handbook. All 2014 versions of Spells will still be accessible in the D&D Beyond Compendium and available for players to access.
Magic Items
All users, regardless of whether they have purchased the 2024 rulebooks, will be able to access updated magic items for free if they have previously purchased the 2014 Player’s Handbook.
Only two magic items are impacted by the 2024 update, with minor changes to their text: Potion of Healing and Spell Scroll. The 2014 versions of these items will still be accessible in the D&D Beyond Compendium. We will evaluate upcoming changes to other magic items with the release of the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide.
We never asked for free 2024 content.
We just want to be able to continue using 2014 content in our character sheets.
The whole reason people are angry is because we won't be able to use our purchased content (2014 not 2024) in our character sheets.
We are fine with not getting free 2024 content so long as we can keep our paid-for 2014 content for use in the character sheet.
If you were really listening, you would be able to hear and read in just about every SINGLE comment and post across the internet and these forums that people want a legacy toggle. Implement it. We paid for our editions and this is not a game that can just easily implement new rules automatically to ongoing games. You know this.
You had us pay full price for dnd books for the purpose of being able to use all of the content for the character creator.
But now, the ruleset no longer applies, and you're just outright replacing things.
Not very confincing to pay money again. This site was built on 5e, to throw it out now with a poor excuse of 'But guys it's just an update uwu !' is quite frankly insulting.
I don't see how this addresses the concerns or changes a thing. For a campaign in progress to lose their current character sheet versions of spells and forced to change is absurd. I have already ordered the new books, but I do NOT want to have this change forced on our current campaign. We have a brand-new player to D&D that is counting on using this site's character sheet to make playing and understanding the game easier. This "solution" does not do that, and it's not at all in the spirit of what we were told would be the way this rollout would work.
As someone who actively dislikes what the 2024 rule book has done to several key features of the class I play, I have zero interest in being forced to homebrew spells and items so I can keep my character kit congruent with the ongoing campaign(s) I’m in. I paid for the 2014 rule set and subsequent books, I’m choosing not to update to the 2024 books, having access to the compendium is sub-bare minimum required of ya’ll since I bought the content, being told if I still want access on my character sheet (the only reason my group uses this service) is to home brew I will absolutely cut my losses and cancel my subscription and go back to just pen and paper.
Just give us a toggle option, it’s not that hard.
Weakest backpedal I've ever seen. This site is a character creator with a bunch of bloat around it, nobody gives a shit about the "Compendium" just let us make 2014 characters in the character builder LIKE WE PAID FOR!
Isn't a back pedal considering nothing changed, no?
This doesn't make the changes any better. It's still making it nigh impossible to use the app to play using the 5E.14 ruleset. Why would I use the app if I have to reference the compendium? The entire USP of the app is that the spells are accessible in one place, now it's actually worse than just using a book or searching the spell on google.
Getting updated spells and magic items for free, without giving them a dime for it, does make the changes better. A lot better. Before, it seemed as though you were just up the creek without a paddle and had to homebrew to even make your character sheet functional. Now, it will just be replaced with the most up to date versions. Very different and much better.
2014 users don't want the "free updated spells and magic items." We want the content we PAID for.
Forcing the 2024 version down our throats is NOT better.
I use DNDBeyond to make things easier, what you're going to do will make using 2014 PAID content so much harder to use, the fact the RULES on our sheets will change is absurd.
I've been in a long running campaign for over 4 years. There are 5 of us with master tiers and a DM with a hundred NPCs. Will there be an option to maintain 2014 spells on the character sheets at least? We understand that while we can technically look them up in the books the reason we use D&D Beyond is so that we have easy access to what we've already purchased. We really really don't want to have to rely on homebrew copies of the spells we've used for years but we will. Is there a reason the 2014 spells can't be turned on and off; especially if they're already giving the 2024 spells to us for free (apparently).

How is getting content for free without paying for it NOT BETTER than losing the old content and getting nothing?
Again, I outlined why it is better than the previous understanding. Your argument on why it is not better really is just you arguing why you do not like it.
I don't want the "updated versions", I want to finish this campaign using the ruleset we started playing it with, the ruleset that I paid money for!
And their solution is "Just homebrew everything if you want the old spells in the app". Well, if that's the solution, why would I ever purchase a product from them again, when I could just homebrew it?
It is better, you just are still unhappy about it. I outlined why it is better. I am not saying you have to like it. Please read my post for what it is.
It is in fact not better for me.
Just because you believe it is better for you, doesn't mean that is the case for everyone, don't assume it is, and certainly don't tell other people that they are incorrect about it. You have a completely subjective opinion on the change, just like I do, they are both valid, so don't act like yours is the objective truth, and don't dismiss my opinion as if it were.

"Better" is subjective. This may make it "better" for you, but to those of us who are realizing that all the money we've spent and purchases we've made on DnD Beyond are about to go to waste because there is a new system and WOTC/DnD wants more of our money. That (let's be honest) we were probably going to give them anyway. This is a slap in the face, you can call it "better" because they are going us a flower afterwards but they still slapped us in the face.

No, it is objectively better, just not to your liking. It is content you get for free over your previous understanding, which is that you lost old content and got nothing. How I feel about the changes have not been discussed at all because you can't see beyond your own anger on this.
The only people that were worried that their Compendium Access would be removed are those that weren't paying close enough attention to the verbiage.
COMPENDIUM ACCESS IS NOT THE PROBLEM.
The Problem that we are all concerned about is the fact that ALL of their 2014 characters are going to be forced into the 2024 Ruleset without our consent, and WoTC's only response is:
"Well if you don't like it, you now have to spend time in our garbage Homebrewing system to recreate currently existing 5e content you have already paid for the privilege to use in our character creator tool because we can't be bothered make this transition make sense."
I don't know of a single person that bought the digital versions of 5e content without wanting to use that content in the character creator. What WoTC is doing here is honestly disgusting and predatory. There is no legitimate reason for why they cannot accommodate players who wish to continue using 5e rules and content within the character creator by simply spinning off a legacy option for character sheets.
It is so easy to see that the main logic behind this decision is to strong-arm people into being forced to pay for the new ruleset books (which aren't even coming out yet might I add) to comfortably transition existing characters to the new half-baked rules.

So much for "Backwards Compatability".
Me and my groups will be moving away from DND Beyond at our earliest convenience.
