How is anything I said incendiary? Quote my post that is egging people on. People can choose not to engage posts that they do not like. There is no requirement to respond to me at all. Thank you for your concern though. If I feel I need to step away, I surely will.
No, Erik, it wasn't the topic at all. The first 5 responses (including mine, which you first replied to) are about accessing the 2014 content in the character sheet, which is going to be impossible after these changes.
This doesn't make the changes any better. It's still making it nigh impossible to use the app to play using the 5E.14 ruleset. Why would I use the app if I have to reference the compendium? The entire USP of the app is that the spells are accessible in one place, now it's actually worse than just using a book or searching the spell on google.
My response explains why it is better, just not to your liking, which IS directly on topic to your response and this thread, which I posted here:
Getting updated spells and magic items for free, without giving them a dime for it, does make the changes better. A lot better. Before, it seemed as though you were just up the creek without a paddle and had to homebrew to even make your character sheet functional. Now, it will just be replaced with the most up to date versions. Very different and much better.
Not better and not to your liking are not the same thing and 'nigh impossible' is obviously a gross exaggeration.
No, it doesn't make the changes any better, because it was never my assumption that I would lose access to that content in the compendium or otherwise. So you are objectivelywrong about that one. The changes aren't better than something I had not assumed would occur. They are worse than a legacy tab or not including content and leaving 2014 content that I paid for alone though.
If you had assumed it would be removed completely, I can see why you would think it being replaced by 2024 content is "better", but that was not my assumption. As I already said, don't presume to know what other people want, know, or believe. You are not omniscient, you are not objective, you are not infallible, you're just a person that has commented on the DnD Beyond forums 1400 times in 6 years and tied their own self-identity to the product enough to perceive any criticism of it as a personal slight against you.
Also, I want to congratulate you on a job well done. You have correctly assessed that my wording "nigh impossible" was hyperbole. Excellent analysis of language, big ribbon for you. (Can you determine what linguistic element I used in that sentence?)
Well we will see if there is a mass lawsuit we can join for taking away our digital purchases intended for character creation and functionality when its only available in a compendium. This “Clarification” seems intentionally vague and not direct and clear on what everyone keeps asking here. More WOTC shenanigans again. Postured to cancel subscription again.
I play in a group where some people uses the 2014 physical books, and some players such as myself use apps like DnD Beyond for convenience. With this change its just going to be a headache for app users when all the spells get updated. I have not bought a single physical book and only used DnD Beyond for its convenience. What ever happened to "Everything is going to be backwards compatible"? I know why you guys won't do a "legacy" tab, cause then you couldn't force players to indeed switch and have to pay for for the 2024 books. Should have known something like this was going to happen back when you guys took away piece meal purchases away. This is pushing away players, this move is going to hit Hasbro pocket books.
Roll20 already fixed this problem, please just do what they did! At character creation, the user picks which ruleset they want to use. That’s it. Just do that PLEASE!
Yeah, but Roll20 only has to manage a few dozen game systems, you can't expect DnDBeyond to match that sort of technical wizardry when dealing with a massive 2(ish) systems.
All you have to do is do what other people have laid out here for you. Legacy tags so we can make and maintain character sheets for 5e. WOTC has the ability and technology to do this as they have already done it in the past. It is a simple solution you can do to keep old players and get new players. Again, if the people who made the rules actually played their own product, they would realize how simple and easy of a solution this is.
"Better" is subjective. This may make it "better" for you, but to those of us who are realizing that all the money we've spent and purchases we've made on DnD Beyond are about to go to waste because there is a new system and WOTC/DnD wants more of our money. That (let's be honest) we were probably going to give them anyway. This is a slap in the face, you can call it "better" because they are going us a flower afterwards but they still slapped us in the face.
How is it better for me? Something is better than nothing... objectively. You are not getting something where you previously were getting nothing. If something is not better than nothing, don't use the site at all. It's all the same to you.
I'm gonna break into your house and steal your TV, it's okay though, I'm leaving a free turd on your doorstep. This free turd is objectively better than nothing.
OK, let's chill on the Erik invective. He was making a simple point that doesn't really contradict those of us who are angry about the lack of spells in character sheets, and it gotten taken the wrong way by a lot of us here because we're mad. Let's direct the venom where it's deserved, at WoTC.
If that were true, he wouldn't have kept telling me that I am “objectively wrong” about these changes being bad.
No one cares about the compendium having the old spells. It's a clunky and annoying way to view things, and my players aren't going to go searching through your site for every spell they want to cast mid-combat just to make sure they know what it does in my game.
I purchased content and subscribed to this site for the sole purpose of making easy, accessible character sheets for my players where everything was one click away and streamlined.
I'll be cancelling my master tier sub. I would have done it already, but that page continues to be broken for me, so I guess I'll have to contact customer support.
You just said the same thing that the update says. It is clarifying. It’s not changing the fact that I bought a bunch of books and spells, beyond the core content you’ve provided for free. I understand there has always been free content to make characters. I BOUGHT ENTIRE BOOKS, I HAVE FRIENDS THAT BOUGHT EVERY BOOK SO IT CAN BE USED TO MAKE CHARACTERS ON A WEBSITE.
This is like Fortnite, selling a bunch of skins for characters to use, updating the game and saying, “you can look at your purchases, but not use them on the website for the reason you purchased them.”
I have zero reason to buy any content on this site if it’s just going to be pulled someday. I spent about $159 on digital content to make characters, I don’t come on this site to read the books, I own the physical books. If I can’t use my purchased content for the reason it was sold to me, I don’t know why you should get to keep my money.

Do you honestly not see how repeating "it is better, you just don't like it" is just going to wind people up?
What sort of response were you expecting? That everyone would suddenly realise that losing something of value but gaining something worthless to them was a good thing?
I like how they are forcing 2024 rules on players through their character sheets. It sure will make their 2024 numbers look nice for the people up top. It will be something like "Look at all these players who made the change to 2024! Wow people must really like it! Look, the voices crying out against us are just a small minority. You can tell most people like the changes as seen by the number of players using the new rules!" Or something like that...

My statement is not incendiary and you are not explaining how it is here. This is just an attempt to justify poor behavior from others.
Also, I too have already expressed dissatisfaction in this very thread about the changes, yet I have managed to maintain control of myself. So yes, I expect others to do the same.
Roll20 spent yesterday and today advertising how on their platform you'll be able to pick between a 2014 and 2024 character sheet and won't lose any functionality if you decide to stick with the older ruleset. They specifically said "both Sheets are compatible with 2014 and 2024 rules, so you can keep using your existing spells, magic items, & monsters without interruption" which seems fairly targeted at what D&D Beyond said you won't be able to do following the update. It's always hard to leave a walled garden if you've invested heavily into D&D Beyond but Roll20 is pitching hard to be where you land if decide to leave.

What I love about this post, is the three Trekkies. One in name, One in signature, and 🖖
"No, you don't understand! We're doing exactly the thing you were complaining about!" - WOTC.
People are frustrated that their 2014 character sheets will suddenly have 2024 spells instead of 2014 spells. That will have big effects on anyone trying to run a campaign with the 2014 rules - like the two campaigns I'm currently in, which I'd rather finish with the 2014 rules instead of having to try to convert everything.
Of course you can look up the old spells in the Compendium, but that completely negates the benefit of using D&D Beyond!
Also, I haven't seen anything about Warlock invocations. Will the old invocations continue to show up on 2014 character sheets? Or will they change to the 2024 versions as well?

This. I've already spent a lot of money on D&D Beyond. Now I'm wishing I'd spent it on Roll20 instead, because I'm not in a position to purchase the same content a third time!

Don't like the idea of WotC getting kickbacks from Roll20 purchases, but as a curiosity what are their prices like?

Draw Steel definitely looks pretty good so far. I'm also loving playing Shadowdark.

Anyone else remember that time Apple gave everyone that U2 album for free whether they wanted it or not?
